Have no idea how credible the link is but if he’s over his injury problems then he’s the perfect centre back for us as he’s left footed, left sided, quick, great on the ball and physically very strong.

Barca need the money fast if they’re to ever pull off the De Ligt deal before Juve do as well as needing funds for Griezmann or Neymar, they also have a ridiculously high wage bill. I know he’s had his knee problems but I was of the understanding it was a one off long term injury that was aggravated by coming back early ?

No fanx, for the money Barca will want, with no guarentee his injury problems are behind him, this would be a bad investment.

He's proper CB when not injured. I'd personally take a risk on him considering we most likely can't get better one in the current market.

Prior to his knee problems he would have been a good signing. Far too big a risk now.

They're going to want as much as Maguire for him though. No way they take less that 60m.

Maguire will be closer to 80m. If Barca are desperate to raise some money, which they probably are, maybe a 50m offer could tempt them. Plus they also may think he wont recover 100% from his knee issues and be his old self

They sold fecking Cillesen (? Spelling) for 35 mill, they will ask us to fund their Griezmann purchase

By that logic why are we buying him?!

I think I'd prefer Maguire tbh. Do like Umtiti but he's far more risky.

That is just an accounting trick, they purchased Neto for the exact same.

Maybe we think it is worth taking the risk. A 90% fit Umtiti would still be our best defender to be honest :D

We sure are desperate for a CB, not sure Umtiti will be the one we are going for, it is easy to make that link.

Agree with izek that Barca need to raise money and Maguire costing around 80m.

It's a risk no doubt, but if it pans out for us we can get a top CB for 60m. If we don't we might still recoup some of the money.

I don't understand the logic....we already have 3 injury prone cb s - Jones, Rojo and Bially.

I agree.

A) It sounds like Barcelona needs money. Umtiti is very expensive.
B) They do not need Umtiti (he is second choice behind Pique/Lenglet).
C) His knee is their problem.

Of course, they would like £80 mill. Of course, they would prefer to pretend that his knee is fine. But it is not. And it do affect his value.

Maybe we could try to get a loan?

Not ideal, but neither is paying £80 mill for Maguire or £100 mill + for Koulibaly.

Mirror the loan deal that Inter are offering us for Lukaku...
£10m upfront with an OPTION to buy.

Injury concerns and aerial concerns would make him a reluctant ‘no’ for me.

Difference is Barca seem to WANT to sell Umtiti whereas Leicester do NOT want to sell Maguire hence Leicester asking for a ridiculous fee to sell. I’m not sure what wages Umtiti is on but maybe we could offer to pay £10 million to loan him for a year with another £40-£50 million as an mandatory transfer fee if he proves his fitness over the season and plays a certain amount of games ? That would make perfect sense and everyone wins.

You mean option to buy at 40-50m or obligation to buy? Because if it is the latter we will be essentially bond to buying him either way. If we can get him 10m on loan with his wages and option to buy it will be fantastic deal for us.

Sadly we don't do these :(

He made 25 league appearances in his first two seasons at Barca, and 14 last season.

No thanks. If he can't stay fit he doesn't solve any of our issues, despite how good he is.

That's true, rolling the dice for a lot of money though!

Yeah, I think he would be miles better than Maguire, but can we afford to risk that on such a pivotal area?

probably not. The majority on here would rather splash the cash on a 'sure' thing, like De Ligt or Koulibaly, even if more expensive. We wont get these players though, so either take a risk with a younger CB, a risky one or overpay for the 'second rate' CBs, like Maguire. No matter who we buy this summer (outside of the world class category)as a CB, people will complain, either because of fee, age or injury issues. Is not buying a CB an option? I dont think. I want to see someone in, because i am fed up with the usual suspects, namely Rojo, Bailly, Jones and Smalling.

Since his debute in 13/14, Umtiti has missed a total of 52 games through injury according to Transfermarkt. Of those 52, 31 were knee problems and all of them the last 2 years. Hard to tell if he really has continuing "knee problems" or if it's just bad luck. Anyway, Barcelona has released Vermaelen so hard to see them sell Umtiti, they only have Pique, Lenglet, Umtiti and young Todibo.

I read a quote, that the the biggest asset of a professional player is his availability. If a player is often not available because of injuries, i wouldn´t invest that much in him.

Most on here would say that their biggest gripe with Ashley Young is his availability.

It's only one injury not several ones. It kind of make a difference when you evaluate it.

He's been carrying the same injury since May 2018 though. That's a problem

Thought he looked a bit small for a centre back... damn, he's 5cm shorter than me... he's only 182cm  Lindelöf is at least 187cm, which still isn't that tall for a centre back

But you need to put it in context, it was a manageable injury and he wanted to play the World Cup which he did, then instead of having a surgery which is obviously invasive they decided to see if a long rest was enough, it wasn't and he finally did the surgery. We are not talking about a player that immediately had an intervention meant to fix the issue long term. And I'm not saying anything about the state of his knee today because I know nothing about it and no one in here has a clue either.

Height isn’t as important as people make out. You don’t need two tall centre backs and the midfield can do the job at corners.

Cannavaro is 5’9 and one of the best of his generation because he read the game so well.

Roberto Ayala was also small, someone like Desailly was relatively small at a time where height was more valued too. In the end those centimeters aren't important at all because timing and explosiveness are far bigger factor when it comes to aerial duels.

You are right in general but the PL is a different beast. Still a lot of teams with a big target man. How many times have we had issues with the likes of Glen Murray. You can certainly get away with it in CL or Europa. Playing this lad and Lindelof who is also poor in the air would be a challenge against those lower teams who still operate with big target men. Recall that early goal Spurs scored against us from kick off, one long punt up field Kane flicks it on goal.

Well of course there's other factors that's important in the end... question is... does he have any of those? And as mentioned earlier, that knee is worrying

Till now the CB s we were mostly linked with - DeLigt,Maguire, Kk and Diop are all taller than the average CB. So i would be very if we went for Umtiti.

A big target man. Firstly, there isn’t as many these days and secondly I’m not advocating two short centre backs. Height is a small percentage of what costs a goal, a short centre back won’t let himself get into a position where he’s isolated against a big striker and if he does there’s a lot he can do to compete before it gets to the point of him being towered over.
