Is there any chance that JM recognised that he'd inherited a squad that had played a lot of football, but had been carrying a psychological burden post Ferguson?
Throughout his career Jose has had almost immediate success, but it hasn't lasted. He's spoken of his desire to be here for a long time, perhaps there are things he feels he needs to do differently. Players like Martial have played a lot of games, and he doesn't seem to have the physical edge to his game that we know he can have. Important players play important matches, even when not fully fit... Bastian has done this throughout his career. It's partly because of the mentality that made him a great midfielder, but it wouldn't have done him much good long term. The same could probably be said for Rooney.
Is there any chance that we actually got the "genius" we hoped we were hiring in Mourinho? Did Bastian need a few months to fully recover what he simply could not between the WC and the start of the season? Ferguson mentioned that Carrick never got going as a player until November. Intimate knowledge like that was tossed aside when Moyes came in. Perhaps Jose is actually trying to manage his squad.
Players like Herrera, who weren't central to Van Gaal's plans and didn't play as much... are some of the players that look the best this season.
Perhaps... and I'm giving him a lot of credit here:
Rooney needed taken out of the firing line, but not before he himself could be shown that he wasn't offering us anything.
Mikitaryan needs time to settle in a new country, a new environment, a new team, league, way of playing.
... and Bastian was told that he wouldn't be considered until November in order to get him to fully recover. If he chose to leave, the club would understand, but if he chose to stay, and kept his head up, and his mouth shut, that this was the plan, and he'd come back twice the player. He wouldn't be registered for the group stages of the Europa league because he wasn't going to be involved much in time... but come back fit and he could play in the knock-outs.
Now, that's not to say we shouldn't be at least 6 points better off than we are.
