The thing about McTominay is he isn't actually all that young anymore. He is going to be 25 this year, so he is not really going to develop much.

This is really when he should be showing what he is capable of, and it is not enough. He isn't going to suddenly develop much better passing or tackling. I think he is pretty much showing what he is going to be in the future.

He definitely needs replacing.

He's a tidy footballer and a capable backup but his position has to be the first on the upgrade list this summer.

He'd be alright if we played a three in big games or protecting a lead. Should never be starting in a two for us though.

Not anywhere good enough to be a regular yet somehow keeps getting picked, more than likely because of others lack of ability rather than his own ability which is limited. He hides from the ball and struggles to string 3 passes in a row together. With him and Fred pulling the strings it's going to be a long wait till we are competing for the top honours.

But what are his strengths and are his strengths up there with the best in Europe ?
Are you kidding?

He's driven, is strong and has a strong shot. That's it. Mctominay among the best in Europe at anything would be hilariously to fathom. He isn't this Roy Keane redcafe decided he was after a few all effort action peformances where his work rate stood out

Physical case of people overrating passion. He's nowhere near the likes of for example Wijanldum and Fabinho when they are in form for Livepool.

We'll never replace him. He's too important at United for some reason. I think he should be our fellaini. A dysrupting force.

Not as bad as many in here are suggesting. He's been in relatively poor form lately though and we have such bad depth in midfield that we really don't have many other options. Should he be starting every game? Hell no. Is he a useful player to have as a squad option? Hell yes. But he really, really has to work on his passing, it's been his main weakness since he became a first teamer and if he can't fix that then he shouldn't be a starter.

One game and suddenly everyone's giving him loads of stick. Such a knee jerk generation.

Is he the best in the world? Probably not. But are we buying the best in the world? No.

Still like him as a B2B midfielder - I think that's where his strengths are. This obsession of shoehorning him into a DM hasn't worked and won't work. He could be a decent squaddie here.

Just to add - I feel he has looked relatively ok under Ole and Ole deserves credit for that. He was horrible under Jose, and clearly playing him was some bizarre politically driven decision.

I don't think I've seen a more limited player get as much acclaim as McTominay has at United thus far. We can't let our standards drop this badly. I'd like to see him moved on personally.

Fletcher, Park, P Neville, Butt - for me he is not better than any of those players and they were squad players, not full time starters. Should tell us all we need to know about our depth right now. I'd like to see him come in as specialist and when the fixtures pile up, however, he or Fred can be nowhere near the starting line up next season.

He hasn't had any run of form since his injury back in the 1st half of last season. Few good games here and there but nothing consistent.

He's been living this whole season on his performance against Leeds.

Its been a while. It not just one bad game, its a history of not taking responsibility and hiding from possession. This was the year I expected him to take that next step, he hasn't

Or the chest control of Fellaini and if he can cause problems Fellaini can cause for the other team, `yes.
We both jest. What a crying shame Fellaini became our first marquee signing post Ferguson, Moyes’s testament to his lack of imagination. Fellaini did have a battering ram quality but was completely unsuited to a side with aspirations of playing elite football. McTominay is very limited in his passing range but he has shown an ability to ghost in for some fantastic strikes.

It's not just one game though is it? Look at this thread further back and look at previous season performance threads. McTominay has always been a focal point of contention with the same criticisms being handed out about his game. At 24 going on 25 I feel this is what you get with McTominay. He's not good enough if we're being honest with ourselves

Why is best in the world even in the conversation as if that's the only acceptable level. He is simply not good enough.

We only need one of McTominay or Fred in the squad. We're crying out a technical player when both of those play, and we invariably have no control in midfield.

I think McTominay has more uses than Fred as a squad player. He scores more goals, is a presence from set pieces, and is a bit more of a force in midfield. However, I've felt for a long time now that neither are anywhere near the standard we need to properly challenge City.

He was amazing up until he got off. This is the type of performance I love to see from Scotty, good passing, an unbelievable number of interceptions, some great runs...

Offers far, far more than Fred. I have been saying from the start that if we get a proper DM to free up McTominay, he can become a really solid #8, box-to-box midfielder. Also the fact that he is homegrown is a bonus.

My motm today, thought he was quality in the middle of the park, at points covering the central defenders at times.

Good performance. One of the few players who performed to a decent level. Cut out a dangerous cross just before half-time. Good run before being fouled in dangerous territory early in the 2nd half.

Back to front was very good, the whole team went off the boil when he went off. Hopefully he's ok for the Europa final because he'll be missed otherwise.

There was a moment I think about 3 minutes in that sums him up. Fred and Pogba beat the press and have a nice little link up that creates a huge open space for McT to look up and do something with the ball. There are options ahead of him and he decides to give the ball straight back to Lindelof.

He’s one of the players who will benefit the most from fans returning I think. Seems to thrive off the crowd as much as anyone.

Played well.
Much better performance when he is hungry for the ball.
Need more of this.

I saw that and was going to mention it. He was in acres of space too. That moment really does define him as a player. The high praise he's getting after a substandard performance against an already relegated club that looked like our equals is really baffling

How our standards have dropped! People seem to be pleased quickly nowadays. He has been mediocre at best for most of the season and is a squad player at best

Didn't look out of place against the opposition last night. Must be a back up next year.
