There were two instances where he's just not anticipating where the ball should go. One was at the end where he had 10 yards of space all to himself and was the only outlet, and he still lost possession.

The second one when Greenwood passed the ball and he SHOULD have anticipated where it was gonna be but he was running ahead of it. It wasn't a bad pass, he just got out of the way and turned it into a a bad pass.

Lots of people willing to stick the dagger in on a guy who had groin surgery and came straight back to play 350 minutes in 13 days

Thought he was fine today.
Which just begs the question: why is Ole playing him 3 times in a week after coming back from surgery?

Rio highlighting his part in the goal conceded. Townsend busting a gut to get up the field while McTominay is just strolling. It’s unacceptable. This guy won the lottery when Mourinho gave him that new award and Fergie bigged him up because he’s Scottish.
He does this all the time. This is why as much as I hate Fred, atleast he is there to make challenges.

I got so angry at that because Greenwood had no where else to pass. He didnt even care about giving Greenwood a passing angle and just carried on running.

Yes, he's a bit dumb.

Thought he looked better today being played as a #8, got in the box well but couldn't get his shot off.

Fred is getting all the hate today, but McTom had been worse. To be fair his talent to disappear on the pitch is quite impressive, especially for a guy of his size. It's so weird — you expect that getting stuck in would be the thing that the player of his profile (averagely talented homegrown midfielder) would do the best, you know, hunger and desire... Somehow it's the opposite (and yet he still starts).

@GifLord I was wondering if you could please bring up mins 46:12-17 and 52:08-11 both in the second half. These are two pieces of play where McTominay attempted throughballs and just gave possession away under no pressure

Absolutely nonchalant throughout the game. Is he not fully fit?

I thought the exact same. McTominay had no business trying to get ahead of the ball when Greenwood had his back to goal and the lay off was his only option.

Came to post exactly this. Getting stuck in and giving bundles if energy to the midfield was the sort of role he played when he first came on the scene.

When we get a new manager he‘ll be sold to West Brom or some team like that and he won’t look out of place.

Thank you. This perfectly sums up why he's accused of hiding so often, because he's so poor on the ball. His overall poor passing stats and low number of passes attempted per 90 compared to the rest of the midfield reflect this

He's absolutely awful since he came back from injury.

He offers nothing apart from height.

Been shite since he came back. Was poor for long stretches at the back end of last season but had a good game stepping forward into an empty midfield in the EL final. The amount he plays and the lack of options to replace him are the biggest problem with our midfield. Slows it down and does nothing with it. Doesn’t play many passes. Hides behind players instead of showing for it. Doesn’t reliably tackle or track runners. An in between player that excels at nothing apart from arriving late into the box.

Except his passing accuracy today was 90% only 2nd to Lindelof.

And it’s not like he was just stacking up 5-yard passes - he played a lot of quick first time passes after he was played the ball with speed and helped the team’s dynamism in the final third.

He was less effective in the second half because he started to hurry his passing while in turn trying to increase our tempo.

Absolutely no substance to this post at all. Fred cost us a goal. Then you mention getting stuck in, hunger & desire… he (McTominay) started a brawl in the first half after a brilliant dispossession and was screaming at everyone in the first 15-20 minutes of the second half to quicken their passing.

Say it again, Fred has dragged this guys name through the mud today after yet another game-changing mistake.

Scott was rubbish against Villa but he was fine today.

He moves like he’s running through treacle. So immobile, so poor positionally and so average on the ball. I don’t get why Matic isn’t getting his minutes, he remains 2x the player. I thought last season that McTominay was the biggest weakness in the first 11 in terms of quality and the fact that we have spent another tonne of money and he’s still in there is gross negligence. He’s just not good enough.

He is good at pointing and shouting I’ll give him that, I don’t think anyone pays much attention but at least he tries. Think he’s be better off concentrating on his depth win game before he tries telling others what to do though.

Fully agree with that on-point situation description.

Fred made a mistake pretty high up the field - so many of the things happening later were shit, but you decide to give Fred the fault for the goal. Seems wrong. And the scene in the first half was dumb AF. McT could/should have been sent off - you never have the right to touch another player. To defend that kind of behaviour makes so sense at all, it only shows the underlying issue: sentimentalities towards players from the academy.

If you really think, McTominay was fine today and Fred was rubbish, I can only advise you to check your own bias'. Because you don't seem to see a clear picture.

Cool. In-depth.
Does it really need to be? If that's your standards — one good duel that lead to a brawl & some loud shouting (looking at yourself much?) — I don't think that it makes sense to argue with you as we clearly don't even remotely agree on those.

VDB must be on the bench ordering some stilts as surely that’s the only thing he’s doing wrong compared to this guy?

he can’t pass, he can’t read the game. passion fc.

That's a bonus.

People were saying hiding is too harsh and there might be some truth in that but there are so many times where he jogs close to their midfielder and doesn't make himself available for a pass when our defenders have the ball. It's either hiding or just terrible football iq and I don't know what's worse at this point.

Did you see the two wayward passes in the gifs I requested? They were hardly mentioned in the matchday thread yet when Fred gifted the opposition in a similar fashion it was mentioned to death by a multitude of posters.

Those two passages of play are pretty common for McTominay, it's why he's the worst passer we have in midfield and why his stats season for season reflect this. Key passes, assists, chances created, McTominay falls behind in all these aspects

Continues to get picked despite his obvious poor form. Ole’s fascination with him will continue to cost us and possibly the manager in the end.

Games against the big teams when we're sat in and need a high energy battling performance he has some uses. Otherwise he offers very little. He doesn't tackle, he doesn't score/assist/create changes or run with the ball and largely just plays it safe. Complete passenger today.
