Feel like people don’t want to compliment him.

Well done Mctominay -great performance in midfield.

Definitely. There was one point in the first half when AWB gave him a stinker of a pass and he lost it. About 10 posters piled onto him of course. Seems like Ten Hag fancies him more than Fred without Casemiro in the team.

He had some excellent moments, but also had some moments I put my head in my hands. Overall a good match though and hopefully he can keep up that level of performance for the rest of the season when we need him to play if Casemiro is rested or out for some reason.

Really stepped up these last two games - pretty much as much as we could’ve hoped during Casemiro’s absence (even though he didn’t really play Casemiro’s position.)

Best game for us this season? He did well, good run and good finish. He just doesn't do it consistently enough, even when he was starting every game.

If EtH decides he likes Mejbri/Mainoo and wants to start integrating either one into the team next season, then McT will have to go. Hope we sell VdB as well. Sabitzer I'm unsure but he has shown more qualities and consistency over his career so far compared to McT. Would be ideal if we brought in a young DM to learn under Casemiro.

Had a good game today and I still think he is a good all round back up to have in the squad. That being said I think it might be best for both parties if he is sold in the summer. He deserves to be in the starting lineup and he should bring a decent transfer fee.
Could see him flourish like Evans once he finds the right club.

He generally occupies the right spaces and that’s questionable with Fred. I don’t think he was outstanding but his contribution to the game was noticeable.
Good going in a very trick period.

He was good, better than the other night I thought anyway.

But like AWB, these should be base level performances to build off. But we've been here before with him a couple of good games and then he disappears.

Maybe he might keep it up this time.

I thought his play in the attacking third was surprisingly good; not just the goal but created big chance for Rashford that a defender just about blocked, good cross that Fernandes wasted with a tame header straight at Pickford and a couple of other decent moments.

Lost the physical battle far more often than usual, getting dispossessed an alarming number of times. Probably should have attempted to pass earlier on a few of them. Other times not much he could do.

Showcased both his strengths and weaknesses today. Excellent at getting into the box, supporting the attacks arriving from deep; poor at actually keeping the ball going in midfield, vulnerable under pressure, lacks technical ability.

The Scotland goals have boosted his confidence, particularly in attacking areas. I am pretty sure he will know that he is not always rated among the fanbase, that will have been hard to miss over the last season or so and to get 4 goals in a couple of games like that will have been a huge boost when coming into our lineup. He was good today.

Fred and McTominay aren't competing for the same place.

EtH sees the DM position as being a competition between Casemiro/McTominay and the CM position between Eriksen/Fred/Sabitzer.

Casemiro and McTominay have never started a game together. And the only time Eriksen has started with Fred, we lost 4-0 to Bournemouth at the start of the season. There were a couple of games when Fred and Sabitzer played together, but that was only because of suspension to Case and injury to McT. Otherwise, Ten Hag's team selections have been very rigid.

He was excellent first half when he was very much playing as an 8 with Bruno as the single pivot. Got dragged back in the second half to play in a double pivot with Bruno and was ok but his lack of ability with the ball seems to get more exposed the deeper he gets.

Good goal, such a clean striker of the ball. Big asset of his.

But with Casemiro out, McTominay hasn’t played DM? Definitely take your points about the players he has paired together though.

Excellent movement and then took the goal brilliantly. Far from an easy chance. So often MCT has flattered to decieve, but not today. Great game.

As usual, very quiet on here despite a brilliant performance.
Great goal, great movement, was involved in a lot of build up play.
There's been quite a few of these performances this season, often seems to go unnoticed by those whom have made up their mind about him.

Played very good today. He’s got really good finishing. Need to get him in and around the box a lot more and he’ll start scoring more.

He's alright if he isn't asked to pick up the ball deep and try doing something with it. He's a weird type of a player, who by definition is a midfielder but I actually think the farther away from middle circle he is, the better he plays.

His physicality is much needed these days. I think he's doing max that he can considering his limitations. I think he will be a starter in EPL. In what position, I have no clue.

Yeah he is weird player. He isn't a typical CM who makes good off the ball movement and keeps the game flow but he has good skillset even if limited. His runs actually unsettles defenders and more often than not he completes those dribbles successfully. It turns nothing situation into good attacking one.

Under EtH we are playing those one touch layoffs a lot, so when our player squares a layoff it invites McTominay to carry the ball further forward.

He played well, he usually does when a team puts him under no pressure and he is able to roam a little and bring the ball forward. We don't play Everton every week though.

We're going to go around in circles with him like we did Lingard. You get some arguing he is worth keeping every time he puts in a decent performance against the relegation fodder. Then it's normal service resumed the next time we play any good attacking team.

People need to ask themselves what their expectations of United are. If its to emulate Spurs then mctominay may be a semi competent squad player. If we want to compete with the big boys like Real Madrid and Bayern then he isn't the player our squad needs. Can't have it both ways where we pack the squad full of mediocre academy players and then bemoan the fact we're miles off the PL and CL

I think our biggest hope is that McTominay himself pulls the trigger and says he’s had enough of being a squaddie. If it comes down to it, I have zero doubt that the club and the manager won’t get rid and keep him in this weird flux like you state above.

He certainly wasn't excellent, he was very sloppy on the ball. Got us the winner with a fantastic finish after we struggled to beat Pickford for so long, so you can't really complain but we shouldn't overrate his performance based on this.

He was dispossessed 7 times. Next highest was Rashford... with 3. So yeah, sloppy is the right word.

Great at driving forward and supporting the attack. He's always been great at it. Poor at the most basic things a midfielder should be able to do - pass the ball at a high level and high success rate, control the tempo of the game and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Pretty much. Personally I've grown weary of defending him. At this stage there is no point. No matter how well he does it will be pooh poohed as failure or a one off by his detractors.

I am not one of his fans and one swallow doesn't make a summer. I accept he played well against Brentford and Everton. If this is the bench mark then ye ha !. I will accept the managers decision on him which ever way it goes but I will not accept that McTominay has been unfairly criticised on here.

Hopefully Newcastle were watching. Really needs to go in the summer.

Yeah, I’m afraid this is the reality. If you let yourself dream, he looks like he should be a good no6. He’s strong, tall, a great physical competitor, good in the tackle and he is good at carrying the ball in surges through the midfield when space allows, plus he has a threat in the opposition box.

So you can imagine him sitting for 65 mins and then starting to push forward later in the game as Yaya Toure used to do. It’s a sweet fantasy but McT just doesn’t have the basic technique or intelligence to play no6 properly. He doesn’t know where to stand and crumbles under any sort of press. I no longer think it is possible to develop him into a no6.

His value is as a back up CM with simple instructions to get stuck in and enjoy himself in games where we need a physical presence. I suppose I’d prefer to move him on but he is sort of useful as an option if Case is unavailable.

It's nice to see him play well, means he'll fetch a higher fee so we can replace him with a player that will improve the level of technical ability in the squad.

This is one of the most striking things about fandom these days, the lack of nuance when discussing squad players. People unwilling to accept that a player they don't rate can have excellent games, the grudging praise and the qualifications. Not just with McTominay, you can see it with all the players who get to that status, Maguire, Lindelof, AWB, Sancho, Fellaini, Lingard and many others in the past, once the prevailing view is established and the memes start it is done. Seems to be the case across all topics of debate, polarization of views.

Simple truth when it comes to McT is that Mourinho, Ole, Rangnick and now Ten Hag have all seen value in his abilities. If he was the donkey many on here are certain of he would have banished to the reserves or sent out on loan long ago.

I thought Scott was brilliant yesterday. The way he runs with the ball through the centre of the pitch and midfield reminds me a bit of Yaya. He’s very good at carrying the ball, hardly loses it.

That and finishing is his biggest strengths.
