Key dates for 2025/26

The SPFL has today announced some key dates for next season, with the calendar for 2025/26 along similar lines to the current campaign.

The William Hill Premiership, William Hill Championship, William Hill League 1 and William Hill League 2 will all kick off on the weekend of August 1-3.

The William Hill Premiership will conclude on the weekend of May 16/17, while clubs in the Championship, League 1 and League 2 will finish their regular seasons on the first weekend in May, before the play-offs get under way.

The second season of the expanded UEFA club competitions – the league phase of the Champions League and Europa League again runs until the end of January – exerts additional pressure on the domestic calendar. As was the case for 2024/25, there will be no scheduled William Hill Premiership winter break in season 2025/26.

The group stage of the Premier Sports Cup will start on the weekend of July 12/13, with the final scheduled for Sunday December 14. To enable the tournament to be completed before Christmas, the quarter-finals will, as in the current season, be played on a weekend due to the lack of a midweek slot.
SPFL Chief Operating Officer Calum Beattie said: “We are only just into the second half of the season across the four divisions and there is so much to look forward to in the remaining months of season 2024/25. However, we are well aware that clubs and supporters need to plan ahead. We are therefore pleased to be able to confirm start and end dates for season 2025/26, as well as the full schedule for the Premier Sports Cup. We will again have five clubs competing in UEFA club competitions in season 2025/26 and, of course, we are all hoping that next season ends with Scotland’s participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”

Rangers look like they are lining up Russell Martin. I was hoping he would be an outside bet for the next Scotland manager so interested to see how well he does.

Martin is a done deal now. How do you feel about that @Gio ?
Clearly he has a style of play that most fans were keen to see. That was for both to enjoy watching the team from the stands and to turn more of those sticky draws into wins. So it is a positive move on that front. At the same time it is quite hard to tell just how capable he is. Can he adapt his style to the squad at his disposal? Will he be able to compete in Old Firm games and in Europe to the same level we've seen this season for example? Hard to say.

Yeah I have concerns. But see what happens. A lot of work needed on the playing squad, similar to United really. I paid far more attention to football up here last season and enjoyed it a lot, will be doing the same this season. Could be great fun again.

Seems fair. Just watching the conference now. Completely forgot that you have Kevin Thelwell now too. Think he could do well for you and Martin feels like a good fit for what type of players he would be interested in.

Yeah I think Thelwell is a good appointment. I might be wrong but I don't think Rangers have recruited very well for a few seasons now outside some notable exceptions. Especially if the play style is gonna be very possession heavy, can see a lot of rotation in the squad coming this summer. But it's exciting for sure.

Snoop Dogg wants to set up a burger van at Celtic Park

Snoop Dogg has already published a cookbook and claims to have spoken to the chef Gordon Ramsay about a possible venture in Glasgow together – but he has now revealed he wants to set up a fast-food van at Celtic’s stadium in the city’s east end.

He has described Celtic supporters as “special” and the best fans in European football, and said he identifies strongly with the club’s mascot Hoopy the Hound – describing it in one interview as a “match made in heaven”.

The former pimp is also an advocate for equal pay:

The keen sports fan worked as a correspondent for NBC at the Paris Olympics last year, has launched two youth football leagues, and has been a vocal advocate for pay equality for female athletes.

He doesn't want a bar of Rangers though:

Snoop told the Mail on Sunday: “Am I going to bring my burgers to Rangers as well? Nah, I think we will give that a miss.”

Anything's possible in this world, lads.

Season kicks off this weekend, League Cup games for those not in Europe. Edinburgh City v Partick Thistle to get things underway on Friday night.

Feels so early!

Can rangers make a title race out of it this season? New manager, but letting the Hamza lad go seems to be a set back for their attacking outlook.

I thought Tavernier was expected to leave so they could start fresh.

Quite a rebuild of the squad going on there with a lot of young players. Not sure how that’s gonna work out. I feel they still need a proper experienced striker. IF they could keep them fit I’d say DCL or Callum Wilson would be good

Do you think they’d be okay with some of our players?

Celtic hammered Newcastle in Glasgow earlier today. Didn’t catch the game, or see the teams out. 4-0 seems comprehensive.

Just like 2-1 at home to Stirling Albion. I was at the game, the first time I’ve properly attended an Edinburgh City game (as in paying for a ticket and sitting in the stands).

Rangers apparently very poor and reasonably lucky to get a draw. Passing out from the back with a reasonably poor defence is a huge challenge for Martin to get right.

Martin already calling out some of the players, brave move after 1 league game.

Completely agree. It will prove to be a very good move or he will have lost the dressing room.

On FollowFollow ( Rangers fans forum ) last night, most of their fans think Martin can talk the talk but they don't think he can walk the walk. They are far, far from convinced he is right man for job, and whilst most agree with Martins sentiment, most equally feel it was reckless and he will lose respect of dressing room.

The next 4 weeks ( including this day 4 weeks when we visit Ibrox ) will be hugely indicative as to whether or not he has lost the dressing room.

Personally, I think it was a bit early and reckless to be calling out players but we'll see.

Agree with the sentiment though.

Can't start Idah at a club like Celtic. He's half decent but he's not a natural goalscorer. Might be a good option from the bench.

e's athletic, strong

He's athletic, strong, reasonably quick, but technically, really poor. Poor finisher, and poor football intelligence.

He ain't the answer. Squad player at best. Miles behind Kyogos technical ability and football intelligence.

Couple of Rangers fans I know already want him gone.

I was very surprised by his post match comments, like you I think it was too early.

Yea, very, very early.

He hasn't been in management long, pretty inexperienced, hasn't done much at all in management ( apart from a promotion which was quickly followed by relegation ).

I think a more experienced manager may have held off for the moment.

Be fair enough to have a go if the manager had 10 to 15 years in management, been at the club a few seasons, won titles and cups at the club, I think then he'd get away with it but this is risky.
