Honestly he’s criminally underrated by our own fans. I think he’s quality and think he’s our #1 for years to come. It’s a fecking thing of beauty and the VDS comparisons are spot on.
Agree 100%

I have never been so calm about our goalkeeping situation since Mou left. De Gea was great for a while, but even De Gea became unreliable later and Onana/Bayindir were trainwrecks

I think keepers are specifically trained to punch rather than catch these days.
Any particular reason behind that? I always feel like if the keeper can catch it cleanly then it’s a great opportunity to initiate a counter with a long throw. Punching it out seems more luck based, especially if you have someone like Onana who has a knack of punching into the crowd/right in front of goal and inadvertently create great chances for the opponent.

It’ll be in situation where they’re coming for crosses in a packed box. If they attempt to catch it and fumble it, it’s going to fall to an opposition player - which is so much easier to do than just punching it out of danger. Even a shit crisp packet wrist punch gives the defenders a better chance.

Solid, tall keepers still catch though when they can. Think it’s just easier reaching up to punch than reaching up to catch is all.

At a very basic level, your reach is better with one arm than it is with two. So you can get a fist to a ball that you'd have no chance of reaching with both hands. Plus with all the blocking bullshit that the Arteta's of this world have introduced it's easier to wade your way through a crowd scene if you have one arm free to clear a path.

I no longer feel nervous when we’re leading a match.
With Onana, I became religious without committing to a denomination.

He's definitely better than the two clowns we had lately and it's calmer to watch our games now than during the Onana/Bayindir period.

It’s how they are all trained now. It’s a % call.

No punch away ever flies in your own goal, X% of catches / fumbles do.

It’s a shame we haven’t got him more clean sheets, can’t think of too many goals that were down to him.

I think people are really harsh with the goals that go right in the corner like Kevin's. Yes De Gea at his best might make a great save, but aside from the top shot stoppers and probably not many at 23 years old are making those saves often. Obviously if someone is making those saves it would be an indicator they could be a top goalkeeper or shot stopper but we've seen worse shot stoppers than a De Gea type be considered a top goalkeeper. So it isnt the be all and end all to be making great saves getting to shots right in the top corner.

However I think overall his shot stopping has been average so far this season. With 64% save percentage it puts him in the bottom 6 keepers in the league (or 17th from the top). Hes one of the younger keepers in the league but the others his age have higher %, they are also worked harder with more shots to save with Lammens having the 15th most shots to save

For now hes quite solid overall as we try to get a 4th or 3rd place finish with the squad Carrick inherited but im not convinced either Vitek or another goalkeeper wont come in to compete with him for the #1 spot next season. I'm obviously hoping to see improvement as he gets used to the premier league and natural development and hopefully by the end of the season hes convincing as first choice for a team looking to push on.

I love that we barely notice him. Exactly what you want in a keeper.

The goalkeeper position is boring since Onana left.

Good save at 0-0 even though they shanked the shot a bit, it was still a close enough that it needed go reaction.

Yeah haters are feeding off scraps.

Slight footwork improvements on a couple of long rangers, and leading with the wrong hand on one goal that was thundered in. Typical stuff to work on for young goalkeepers

TNT even had to resort to bringing up that missed trap of the ball on his second game just to be negative

Loving how boring he is - such an underrated trait for a goalie. He just does the basics, is calm with the ball, commands his area and keeps the ball out of the net. Really liking him.

It must be said again. Praise the gods we brought Lammens in and sent Onana off with a straight red card.

Honestly, I’m going to say this every week, he’s massively underrated. He’s a proper keeper.

Also he’s getting better at passing and showing confidence with the ball at his feet.

Remember Scholes saying he must be crap cause he never heard of him.

From what I've seen of him he's good with plenty of potential to be excellent.

Yet many wanted Martinez or were happy to pay massive wages for Donnarumma

Glad we did neither. Lammens is my kind of keeper
I still would have taken Donnarumma first. The guys is class and won stuff. However, Lammens, im not disappointed. He has something and he will develop. I see the Courtois comparisons, I also see a bit of Cech and Van Der Saar. If he turns out half as good as any of them, 20m has been a steel.

We couldn’t afford his weekly salary

Sometimes signing the next big thing is the way to go. Donnarumma wages are far too much, the club is going in the right direction to keep away from that.

He’s 23, stepped into the lion’s den and asserted himself as our No 1 within 3-4 months. He’s a safe pair of hands who makes the odd mistake, but he’ll get better each year. Could become a VdS in his late 20s.
