AWB Doesn’t matter Shaw
Scott
SMS Bruno
Greenwood Martial Rashford

Wow.
Yeah, I'd go for that.

I'd swap Martial & Rashford though, and wouldn't be surprised if James played himself into the LW role by the end of the year.

I'd have martial competing with rashford for the striker position. James presses far more effectively than martial.

Yup that's my thinking also, he fits Ole's system to a tee it seems. Personally I don't like Martial up top due to his awful movement, but maybe with that midfield behind him and a little time to settle in this would improve / become less of an issue?

Tough call. I think Greenwood will be a better #9 than both.

Martial's finishing though is top notch. Solskjaer might be more pro-active about working with him on his movement than mourinho was.

The irony, we did that with Pogba and he has been nowhere near world class either.

I know its exceptional comparisons, but you look at Messi/Ronaldo as examples, they are superb 5 times out of 10, very good 3 times out of 10, average 2 times out of 10 and awful 1 time out of 10 pretty much. Looking at Pogba here you could pretty much flip those upside down

Also we paid not far off £80m for Lukaku and I cant believe anybody would say he has been anywhere near world class.

We definately need an injection of quality in positions, but also need consistency, the right mentality, heart and desire. Whether that is SMS or not I dont know but not one of the players mentioned above has the lot and lets be honest £80m doesnt even buy you a ready made world class player now anyway, as crazy as that is
I only get 3 posts a day but you have summed up my thoughts so well on Pogba that I thought I would use one of them here

Same here. I don't trust Martial and Rashford playing together actually, either one of them start as CF. James on the left is promising.

Reminds me of Michael Ballack! His value may not be immediately obvious but he’s a great cog in a team. Would love him here and would solidify our midfield massively!

SMS is more like a slightly better version of Fellaini than Ballack

One of those players that we've likely held a lifeline out for because pogba could go at any minute. If we get any hint that pogba is willing to stay for one more season, i expect the rumours around this one to die almost instantly.

That’s why they’re so good. 11 different ratings out of 10 though. ;)

(Agree with rest of post btw)

The newspapers are really trying to make this one happen aren't they. I just can't see it at all. Suddenly, out of the blue we're on the verge of signing him for c.£90m.

We've been linked with Fernandes for months, so that makes a bit of sense. It feels like someone re-opened their Summer 2018 transfer bollocks folder and found this at the top.

The rumours actually started around the same time this thread was bumped - I'm not sure which came first though.

Personally I think if we are serious about competing this season we need him and Bruno and Pogba needs to stay.

De Gea

AWB. Maguire. Lindelof. Shaw

McT

Savic. Pogba

Bruno

Rashford. Martial

you might say that team would be too attacking or the midfield would get overrun but actually both Savic and Bruno are hardworking players. Pogba will also defend (yes I know he doesn’t go sprinting after it as much as some would like) and Scotty has got great stamina to get around the pitch. It also solves our problem about which of Martial and Rashford is a main Striker - they both are. We’d have natural runners through the middle if either went wide and I am confident that AWB would give us some much needed width anyway down the right, as has already been proven. We also don’t need to rely on 17 yr old Greenwood, as some of you seem to want to.

What a waste of a post. Compare any player to Messi/Ronaldo. Those two are beyond world class lemon.

It was the flip side of the point scoring related to Pogba that I was referring to mate which obviously went straight over your head

Damm! This is a wasted post.

SMS watchers, explain to me why this guy is being considered a 90m player.

I can understand why Bruno is a 60m player for his goals, and Saul is a 100m player (big match performances); but have never understood the appeal of SMS.

What does he do well? What are the "spikes" in his game.

He is coming only if Pogba leaves. We are struggling for funds and there is no reason to believe we will sign a player similar to Pogba .

90m for Milenkovic-Savic?

I prefer to use that money for someone like Havertz/Sancho/Saul, even if we have to pay a bit more.

So:
1) Pogba + SMS + Fred
2) Pogba + SMS + McT
3) Pogba + SMS + B. Fernandes

Can't any of these 3 sets of all-action CMs run our midfield without a specialist holding/defensive midfielder?

Don't think it would even be an issue. If SMS comes it will be because Pogba is leaving.

It's hard to know how good he really is considering Lazio didn't have one of their best seasons, I mean look at our lot, no one seemed really good last season and we finished in a better position than Lazio.

He has a really high work-rate and is physical, two good traits for the PL, he has a good pass in him and can score goals but he's not a holding midfielder, he does much better further up the pitch and is effective in counters. That said I can't see him coming unless Pogba leaves, they are both better in similar positions.

Worth 90M? Few players are imo but considering Newcastle want 50 for Longstaff? and Palace want 70+ for Zaha?, then yes he's worth 90.

No chance of that. Going for such a fanciful change in personnel, why not chuck a right attacking player in the team rather than adding both Bruno and Savic to Pogba in midfield? And ground it at least slightly by using a 4-2-3-1, since we have played in that shape the entire pre-season.

true but we have played the diamond with a false 9 quite a few times too (granted, not in Preseason).
Don’t think it’s overly fanciful! We’ve bid for Maguire, so I guess it’s only two players that we are unsure if we are even in for, despite lots of media attention. If we end up selling Lukaku and a couple of others, I don’t see any reason why we can’t bring those three with an overall net spend of under £200m (inc James and AWB).

well I do, his name is Ed Woodward.

He’s comfortably IMO one of the best midfielders in Seria A. Strong, good on the ball and can pass well enough. He’s quite composed too under pressure.

He’d work well in the PL I reckon because he’s defensively better than a lot of box to box midfielders.

I'd happily have a midfield that consists of:

McT
Bruno - SMS
Genuinely think that letting Pogba go and signing SMS would be a smart move. I'd actually rather this than see Pogba stay now. I think McT will develop this year into a genuinely reliable screen for the back 4 and with Bruno and SMS there is a great combination of grit, industry and flair. Both know where the goal is too. Give me this please Ed.

Thanks for the replies.

I think this lines up with my impression.

He is above average in a lot of categories without having a "spike" anywhere.

Always feel very uncomfortable about the thought of United paying up for such a player.

Good comparison. I think he'd be a pretty solid signing. In reality he'd effectively be Herrera's replacement with Fernandes probably being Pogbas and replacing his attacking output.

I wouldn't be concerned. Technically he's sound, strong, good engine and he can score. He'd be very good as a box to box midfielder alongside a holding midfielder.
