Dest is not very good. Nobody at Ajax was sorry that he left for Barcelona, earned some millions for an average player who wasn’t even a regular in the team because they had Mazraoui.
Trouble is, we are rapidly approaching panic mode now, I think, and I worry it will just a case of signing a few, just to "salvage" the window and save face.

This is quite clearly only true for a section of the fanbase.

We shall see, Fellaini still springs to mind, as does Ighalo & Cavani....

Barça negotiating Sergino Dest transfer with Manchester United
Barcelona still expect things to happen before the transfer window closes. One of them is the exit of Sergino Dest, with the backing of the club and the coaching staff. Barça want to move the right-back on this summer because he has not convinced and there are serious options for him to leave on loan or permanently.
Barça are negotiating with Manchester United and have asked for €20 million. The English club want to bring the price down by including Diogo Dalot in a potential deal, but Barça are only interested in a cash transfer.
United's interest is not new. They asked about Dest when negotiating for Frenkie de Jong. The English side's coach, Erik ten Hag, worked with them both at Ajax.

Sadly for you, it's a trash source - because it sounds like a no brainer to me.
Barca are pushing him out, he used to play for Ten Hag at Ajax, he was highly sought after, and he's also American. And, you desperately need someone at right back and he can't possibly be worse than Dalot.

Isn't Dest a bit shit, though?
I kind of think so but then Brazzo wanted to sign him pretty desperately.. so you can choose whose opinion you think is worth more, mine or the Bayern sporting executive's

And most of all words cannot describe how shitty I think Dalot is, surely getting Dest in to challenge him can't be wrong. Dest is also still young.

Dalot is well shit to be fair. But we dont also want to hoard average to shit RBs. I still think KWP is a quality full back and perfect for Ten Hag. Would much rather him

I mean it's not like you never have shit transfers, so who knows
Also me thinking Dest is kind of shit to a certain degree has to do with me very strongly wanting him to be shit since he chose to join Barca, that much capacity for self-reflection must be mustered up. For all I know he might be a top talent.

I don't know anything about the purported character shortcomings but have never really been impressed by him when watching barca.

I'd pass, he'll never be a title winning united caliber right back in my opinion.

Aren't there character concerns with him?
Why would there be character concerns? Any source?

And no, not agreeing to another wage reduction is not a character flaw, no matter what Barca fans tell you.

I think this would be a great transfer. Barca fire sale.

He’s not good enough for United. He was a backup to Mazroui at Ajax and we were glad to get rid of Dest.

He had a choice between Barca and Bayern when he left Ajax. Bayern would have been much better for his career.

Too small physically. We have too many physically weak players

I'd take him for the right fee and wage. I don't think he is as bad as people make him out to be and I think he'd fit in. And he is only 21. We only have Dalot in that position. Maybe he can blossom under Ten Hag now.

You are the 2nd supposed Ajax supporter in this thread to claim that, but researching the claim shows it to be blatantly untrue.

In the 19/20 season, which is Dest's last season at Ajax and also basically his only one, breaking through being 18-19 years old, he started more games than Mazraoui in both Eredivisie and Champions League.

Yeah wouldn't just write him off like others have

I can only speak of Dest from watching him for the National Team. He has fantastic attacking qualities and good (not great) pace. Defensively he can be great when he wants to and is engaged. He put Davies in his pocket in the first USA v. Canada game for 95% of the match. The only problem is that 5 (or 40, or 80) % where he gets enamored with his attacking prowess and decides to not track back. He did it against Davies and Canada scored.

He needs proper coaching and a manager who will instill some discipline. I think for the right price he would be worth it, there is a fantastic player in there and his qualities would fit ETH’s system.

I resisted posting anything as I likely have some bias in wanting to (finally) see an American outfield player at Utd, but I do think he would be worth a punt if the price is right and no other options are available.

I want him because Dalot is trash

But it’s that philosophy of getting slightly better which is why United are mediocre

Tough one

Ten Hag be decisive bitch

Indeed, it's really weird, the way so many are writing him off. You'd think he is 26. He is only a year older than someone like Diallo and as old as Garner. And he isn't even bad. I think what he needs is coaching by a proper manager.

Because Mazraoui was injured.

How about instead of buying Dest or playing either AWB or Dalot we use Laird (cancel his loan to QPR) who was our best right back in pre season and looks to actually have a long term future with us.

It's a project, isn't he ? He comes here and there's absolutely no guarantees he'll explode with talent and consistent form, from the start.

Wouldn't expect immediate impact like many United supporters desire from RB position.

Yeah and Erik can provide that, however do we want to deal with Barca again

I'd rather we never deal with that club again, but seeing as we've spent the whole summer doing so we might as well go a little further. And he is no De Jong so it will be easier as long as they don't start pulling some crap. But maybe they can give us a discount if we get De Jong. :D

Yes, please do buy him. I would throw him in for cheap in a potential Frenkie deal, just take him.

This was such a baffling signing at the time, really feels like we got baited because Bayern were interested.

No difference between him and Dalot to me. I've never been too impressed.

Barcelona, America, United, or some random German club where he like most Americans end up... Not good enough.
