Sessegnon may not be quite ready yet, but he's as left footed as they come.
People on here honestly just splurt nonsense. Sooo left footed. I think you will find Sessegnon is also more so deemed a midfielder these days. So if Regulion rumours are true in this sense he would be first choice with Davies competing.

I misremembered; I remembered him cutting inside often, but that's because he played on the right cutting in to his left foot. My mistake.

Have you seen much of Reguliion? Not sure how to feel on him as have basically never actually watched him play.
Only a few games but those are my impressions. I'm usually not a million miles off with these assessments.

Alvaro Morata scored in a Champions League Final for Juventus before Madrid activated his buy back clause, I don't think they gave a shit about how they seemed or swinging their dicks about how big they are but instead got a player who did a really good job for them. The scenario in which it gets activated is we have a left back who performs well and we make a profit on selling him, hardly a disaster. Instead we currently have an issue at left back when we could have had a really good player. Apparently one of the reasons we didn't get Haaland was because we wouldn't accept a release clause (which again would only be activated if he performed well and would earn us a huge profit), I guess we won that by instead getting Odion Ighalo on loan.

Maybe we need to develop a bit more humility about where we are and realise making a profit on sales is a way of helping to build the club back to the top (Liverpool's resurgence was partially funded through making profits on sales and then using the funds to make smart signings).
It's tough situation imo.

It's easy to say we can make money out of it but if this guy end up being very good left back for us which end up sacrificing Shaw, Williams & others from academy, turn up after the sacrificing, he end up leaving the club which unsettle or gives us a new problem that need to be solved again at the left back position.

It's also similar to Haland. if we end up agreeing with the release clause and Haland end up being world class striker, we will end up in the situation of sacrificing the development of Martial & Greenwood as a striker which unsettle the striker position when he leaves the club.

The club has a good point to reject the release clause after all and we are basically not a selling club.

It's the right decision to forget about this guy with the buyback clause.

Ole talks a lot about culture and building something at the club. This guy was not going to fit it if everyone else knew he was going back to Madrid in 3 years if he'd performed well.

If Spurs get Sergio Reguilón without the buyback clause, lots of us will be fuming.

By doing a deal with a buy back clause, it's essentially a lose lose situation.

If he does well, Spurs help build him into a good left back only to lose him for a modest fee.
If he does rubbish, he was a wasted investment.

I don't see how Spurs win in this situation. Even if he does well and other teams want to sign him. Madrid will simply buy him back and sell him to the highest bidder. The buy back clause is nonsense.
Its all about the risk reward ratio no? They are seemingly desperate with little cash to buy new players. This is an immediate solution for them, yeah sure down the road he will leave (if he does well which would be the idea anyway) and they will be looking for a new LB, but short term gain at least. We are not that desperate for short term gain. So our risk to reward ratio is worse.

There is one thing Jose does best. With his incessant whining and crying to screaming, kicking, and hitting he may even impel the usually shrewd Daniel Levy to buy players who don't make too much sense from a financial POV.
I wouldn't be surprised if Madrid offload both Bale and Reguilon to Spurs.

Reguilón with a buy back clause is a no no. How are you ever meant to build something if players have buy back clauses that can be activated at any time?

Also, shows a real weak club mentality if you allow a buy back clause. More than anything else, how much desire does the play have to play for you, if he wants one included?

I understand the clamour for Glazers out. But, it shouldn't get louder just because this deal fell through.

Real want to shunt us with that buy back clause. We are Manchester United, a club equal in size to that of Madrid. We are not putting silly buy back clauses in there just for Madrid to come and snap him up if Reguilon excels. Feck that.

Morata story anyone? Now Juve want to buy him back?? No no. That is just crazy talk.

It is a luxury when its not a signing desperately required. And its closer to 30M then 25.... Do i want Reguilon and 10 other fantastic players to add depth and competition in every position? Obviously. Will this happen? No. Does this generally happen anywhere bar at Madrid? No. Is this a realistic rumour? NOOOOO. Hence my original point in all my posts. It is a bullshit rumour using our name probably for self gain purposes.
Reguilon is not going to join a club where he is going to be in another tussle for first team football (ala madrid). We previously made a similar transfer for Dalot in different circumstances where he was potentialy deemed the heir to Valencia who was ancient and who's contract was expiring. Natural progression. We are not Man City or Madrid. In fact were on a path for better. Creating a squad with a happy dressing room with balance.

People are so quick to right off Williams. The kid is 20. 3 years younger then Reguilon. Just had his first season. Shaw is 25. When both are somehow out for that odd game or 2 there is Fosu Mensah, and currently Rojo. We are well covered. And when were not, the next youth in the system steps up.
I find the idea that it's a luxury if we're not desperate really odd. We should never wait til we're desperate to buy players, we should always be ahead of the curve, not least because you can't go out and buy players whenever you want. And the 30m I kept reading about was in euros, I was just roughly converting to pounds.

Besides, with Dalot on the market we have no backup RB either. Williams is covering both sides. With Shaw injury prone and AWB needing rests in this monster season, the full back position is a definitely a priority area for us. We can’t have spells with no full back cover for either side on the bench.

The fact TFM and Rojo might be our alternatives says it all.

Those who are saying : "Its a good decision we are not buying him because of the buy back clause, dunno why people are not getting this", well the problem is not that.

The problem is we are probably not going to target an alternative player for Reguilon. We are going to use this buy back clause as an excuse for not buying any Left back. Same with Sancho and his fee.

Why chase these players if they were not going to come anyway, waste the whole summer, and then not sign any alternatives either?

Thats whats highly fecked up.

But we don't need another LB, Shaw plays almost half our games each season on average.

I actually think it’s a good sign - trying to cut out stupid deals and getting bullied by selling clubs

On the right we have Dalot and Laird. Obivously when you sell a player you bring in a replacement so if Dalot is indeed sold (fingers crossed) no doubt we may look at a suitable and logical back up player. Or we may entrust another youngster.

Absolutely correct not to proceed with a buy back clause. Very little upside for United in letting Real control the players future. If he tears it up, we lose him for an under market value fee

Absolutely the right decision by the club to walk away from this deal. In fact, from all reports, it seems like it was madrid and their agents using us to stoke up interest rather than us proactively pursuing the player.

I am happy that OGS has us avoiding these kinds of deals as it could open up a pandoras box down the line, with every player we sign/resign asking for a release clause etc.

We only want players who want to stay here long term and play for Manchester United. Not players that have an eye on returning to their dream club.

This was very well done by the club, although again I'm 95% sure most of the wooing was done by the agents/madrid rather than the other way around.

Speaks volumes that no reputable UK media has uttered a word about this one.

Especially as it’s only a measly €15 million more than we would have paid. Like what if he becomes the absolute dogs bollocks and you lose him for net €15 million.

Why are you crying over a Madrid reject? Move on. Am sure he is not better than some in our academy.

Close thread.
Good . People should stop crying over this Madrid reject. There are valid reasons to criticize Woodward and the Glazers, but in this case they were 100 per cent correct. We are not a stepping stone for players, we are the final destination for top class players. Some of you need to have a quiet word with yourselves. United did not have this guy as a main Transfer target this summer. No chance. Move on and hopefully new signings soon. What Ole will say on Friday will tell us more about our summer plans.

I was upset with this until I saw that Spurs included the buyback and first refusal clauses. Correct decision from the club to walk away from it.

This thread is a textbook example of how the media (spanish nonetheless) has worked up our entire fan base.

There was likely very little to no interest from us on Reguillon. It was widely reported by "insiders" that most of the talking was done by agents/intermediaries of madrid to stoke up interest.

There was minimal info from the UK press.

We were never keen on him. We never made an official bid. We definitely turned down the offer because it included alot of undesireable clauses.

I'd be shocked if we even want another left back.

Its Sancho and/or a centreback. It always has been imo.

So this thread can be closed in a day or two after the medicals are done with.
This is the best decision Ed has done all summer.

I love and agree with this sentiment but the number of top class players we actually have paints a slightly different picture.

Incredible seeing folk praise Woodward and co. in here. Okay, you may not have wanted a buy-back. Fair enough. But let's see if they have any alternatives lined-up. I bet they don't, and for that they receive zero credit. It has been clear for weeks what Madrid's stance was on the clause inclusion, in that time we can only pray they have scoped out another target.

But for now - no credit given to the club, quite the opposite really.

Ed Woodward showing why he is a specialist in failure.

Starts negotiating on a player for 2 weeks and gets nowhere. Spurs come in, pay the fee and snap the player. The same Spurs team who furloughed staff, same Spurs who has spent money on Doherty and Hojberg and are said to have no money.

Here is a club finished CL football, needs to improve and signs 1 player.

There will be credit if they promote academy players. Football is not all about signings. Get real.

What do buy back clause and first refusal mean?
Real Madrid can buy him back for 5-10m euros extra at any time they want in the next 4 years of his contract.

If another team offer to buy him before his contract runs out Real Madrid get the opportunity to buy him at the same terms offered by the other club.

Essentially it's a glorified 2/3 year loan from Real Madrid, and if they decide he's not good enough Tottenham get to keep him.

Could you imagine our fanbase reaction if he becomes a fan favourite / star player in the next 2 years, then Madrid get to buy him back for 40m euros? we'd be absolutely fuming.
