Shea Lacey

He has visibly grown from last year, but no way is he 1.82m. He still looked much smaller than the City defenders and he is clearly much shorter than the Fletcher twins who are about 1.80m.

I would guess he is slightly shorter than Amad who is 1.73m.

Beyond height what i would really hope he develops is that initial burst of acceleration to beat his man at the senior level. Right now, he depends greatly on trickery and surprise. Amad developed that acceleration over time too.

Tbf having watched Amad even when he played the nominal games at the Academy, he had that burst of speed even then. I think what he has developed over time is sustaining that speed over a longer distance.
Let's hope Shea can cultivate some of that along the way. It would be a shame that we can't utilise some one with his talent, like those before him

Yeah not sure about the height, but don't think he's around Amad's height either. Think he has had a significant growth spurt. He didn't look small anymore whilst playing U21. He looked tiny for the u18's some time ago.

Might be the reason behind his many injuries, growth pains.

Yeah, Amad had a bit more of that burst in the Under-21s but like you alluded to it has improved with developing more strength and stamina.

One has to remember though that Amad joined us when he was older than Lacey's current age. Now that Lacey's injuries are hopefully behind him and he has passed his growth spurt, maybe he can work on the change of pace, acceleration, strength needed at the top level.

Nah it’s because he plays with bowed legs and a low centre of gravity I can believe that he’s probably 5’10-6’0 now.

He’s not 6’1-6’2 though that’s nonsense.

He is nowhere near 5'10-6'0. He is not the only player with bowlegs. I have seen him standing next to loads of other academy players and it is fanciful to think he is near 6 feet. He is still visibly several inches shorter than the Fletcher boys, who are clearly shorter than Kukonki, who is shorter than Obi.

If Lacey is 6ft tall then the Fletchers must be 6'4 and Obi must be 6'7. Lacey is about the same height is Jim Thwaites as can be seen when they were standing next to each other in the last game.

He has grown to a reasonable height (he is now clearly taller than Ibragimov), but it is wishful thinking to think he is near 6ft tall. Bruno is 5'10, Matheus Cunha is 6'0.

This is like when the reports were claiming Kukonki was 6'5 whereas the training pics and videos showed he was clearly shorter than Maguire

He's never 6ft but I think he looks class and perfect for one of the 10 roles.

Feel he's a bit sharper, bit quicker than Amad in his movements. Or at least will be.

His movement on the ball reminds of Foden. He dribbles with his body so open, which makes it easier to pull off a quick turn, and makes it harder for the opposition to reach the ball without fouling him.

Think it’s a bit soon to say that and very harsh on Amad. Amad has some ridiculously quick feet and is a great dribbler even in tight areas. One example is in the Arsenal game where he had Madueke on toast, and Madueke is absolutely no slouch.

I don't think its harsh to say one player is maybe quicker than another.

A good chance I'm wrong about it as well, can't really tell until Lacey steps up.

I don't particularly mean quicker over distance either. Just those short, sharp bursts, Lacey feels to me he could be more athletic.

Yea, he's I think 5'9" or 5'10" he looks to be around James Overy's height and he's supposedly 5'10". He might get 1 more growth spurt. Usually boys stop at around 19-20. I think it happened to Mainoo where he grew like 2 inches when he was 18

I think if he keeps playing like this he'll be further along than Amad at similar ages. What he's missing is a better touch, I think Amad had a better touch

If we’re talking physically faster then maybe. But you said sharper and quicker movements, and that’s more ambiguous and where I disagree. I think Amad has quicker feet, better close dribbling etc. In that video alone (not taking anything away from him) but he doesn’t really go past anyone and gives the ball away cheaply a couple of times - one through turning straight into another player.

Another thing about Amad is that he’s deceptively strong for his size. There’s a point when Lacey is just easily shrugged off the ball in that video alone.

I’m not saying this to criticise him, as I do think he looks promising, but Amad is an elite level talent and always has been since his days at Atalanta.

Yeah possibly all true. Obviously Amad doing it at the highest level as well. His touch and brain levels up from any U21 player we have.

Probably no need for the comparison really, just leading on from the size comparison and judging how small can you be and still make it in the Prem.

Said it before, which I know some don't like as an opinion, but it is a bit frustrating the most talented young lads we have are tiny.

I know someone will come along and shout Messi but being tiny does make it more challenging to break through.

It does depend a lot on their position though. Full backs, wingers, no 10s and centre mids don't necessarily need to be massive as long as they're strong, fit, and have decent balance. In the olden days you'd have said strikers as well but obviously it's harder playing as a lone striker if you're not able to go toe to toe with the CBs.

He looks 5’10 I’ve seen a few games he looks taller than some but he needs to fill out and Chido probably is 6’5 to 6’6 now he’s just shooting up?

Great for him but seems like it came out of nowhere
There’s a picture of him running with Henderson and Bowen and a few others.
Can only be a good thing

You’d never know it could be random selection or something internally discussed.

They let Garnacho leave because they think he'll be as good or better? Not talking about off-field antics here. Purely in terms of what he brings on the pitch.

Entirely unrelated IMO. Lacey needs another year at least without another injury layoff and developing physically. Even then, next step would probably be a season long loan.

A very different player though more suited to playing our #10 role. I'm sure he had nothing to do with letting Garnacho go as he'd probably be competing for Mbeumo's right attacking midfield spot anyway. I dont personally think prefered foot should matter but Amorim always seems to pick a right footer on the left and a left footer on the right so he seems to.

I am not sure how good is Lacey for this system Amorim is playing. I can't see who will he replace. Cunha/Mount/Mbuemo should be option, but Amorim avoids playing Amad in that position, and Lacey is the closest to Amad of those. I guess because of pressing in that area. On the other hand, it is not like we are sure Amorim will stay long enough for this to be important.

The future first team starts rarely do this.

Diallo is in a similar position and did with Rangers and Sunderland.
Amass, Vitek, Collyer have done this season.

In fact if you look at our recent loans, it's less that we didn't loan players with first team potential (Laird, Kovar, Tuanzebe, Januzaj, Garner...etc) and more that very few were successful. Lacey, Kone, Leon and probably even Chido need a season of senior football before they'll be ready to contribute to the first team.

I actually think he shouldn't go on loan until after a year he makes his debut. I think with his injury woes I would rather him stay close. Unless he really needs games I think he should stay with the team. If he gets a loan it should be in a less physical league so he can gradually get stronger. I actually think at his current level he'd easily be making appearances in the championship but players would probably target him

He plays on the opposite side to Garnacho?

Let's not compare a player that is doing very well in the Premier League to one that has not even played a competitive game for the first team.
It is unfair on both players.

I wouldn't worry about it, its not all that serious.

He might have a chance to get into the matchday squad during AFCON.

Should make a lot of sense with both Amad and Mbeumo out. Probably Bruno/Mount as RCAM and Dalot as RWB but he could make the bench.

I’m hoping we see one of Mantato or Kamason get a run out at RWB, Maz will also be at AFCON. So our cover at wing backs will be quite light.

Would be nice, agreed. They have a lot of potential.
