Shea Lacey

Looks quality. And he looks quite tall too. For some reason I thought he was 5'8 or something

He wasn't calculating the xG, he wasn't even getting his head up to see the passing options.

Mainoo has good shooting technique too, and his shot that went into row Z was just as effective as Lacey's shot that hit the bar in terms of what it gained us. Both handed possession back to Burnley when we could have created a decent chance out of the possession.
It's a shame that Xg wasn't about when Scholes scored that goal against Barca. Would have been good to know what a silly prick he was for not keeping possession.

Fletcher: "I told him [Shea Lacey] to do what he knows how to do. He plays without fear, he is direct and full of enthusiasm. He has suffered a lot of injuries in recent years. He will play an important role in the future of Manchester United; I'm convinced of it."

Just to be clear, you're conflating scoring a goal with not scoring a goal. Is this an example of those lowered standards I read about a lot on the caf?

Simply must play, I would start him against Brighton, give the young lad a chance in a big FA Cup game and get the crowd off their seats.

Nope I don't think you are very clear at all.

Taking "low xg" shots and backing yourself is where moments of magic often come from in football and are a huge part of Utd's history. Sometimes they go in, sometimes they don't. Talking about xg to criticize an 18 year old in his second appearance for backing himself and rattling the crossbar is the most embarrassing thing I have seen on here in hours.

I'd bring him on and give him more minutes. No need to rush him. But based on the limited amount of time he's had so far, he's deserves to be in the rotation.

He plays with that fearlessness you want from a confident youngster.

(And hopefully in time he'll iron out those pesky shots at goal and learn not to try and make things happen and will simply pass it to Dalot for one of his deadly crosses).

Can you provide a citation for that? 2 sources have him as 167cm (5'6").
Those sources are crap and likely from when he just got into the u18s. You're relying on data from youth players which are not reliable on the account that players are still growing. We discussed his height on this forum a while ago, and I'm sure someone will follow this up.

Would have been great if either shot had gone in, but, for all the fanfare, neither was the correct decision.

The first one he ignored Sesko and Dalot (this is understandable tbf ) in the box who he had a clear open pass on to. The second one was incredibly low percentage and only served to give Burnley the ball back and let them run down the clock.
Look at Pep Guardiola over here

Why have we not seen Lacey play more in recent weeks? Would have been the perfect player to come on when chasing games or looking for late goals. Hope to see more soon.

Is he any good with his right foot because after seeing that opposition are going to seriously avoid him cutting in?

He has the ability to go right and go past defenders at youth level. Not sure how that will translate in the mens game, at least in the short term. His close control can allow him to go past defenders in short spaces. He's not afraid to cross with his right foot after defenders cut off his left foot.

Moments of magic come from more than just speculative shots. Sometimes they go in, but they don't much more often. Lacey's shot would go in on average 3 times in every 1000 attempts. It wouldn't be so bad if we didn't have any other options, or were struggling to create chances, but there were passes on to Dalot and Sesko in the box.

I mean let's be clear here, you're making a big deal out of a shot off target. You referred to it as "making an impact" in an earlier post in this thread. A missed shot.

You may find not celebrating us not scoring embarrassing. I get that everyone is looking for reasons to be optimistic, given the chastening result, but I'm just trying to stay down to Earth here. Lacey completed 3 passes, and had 2 shots off target. We all just need to calm down.

3 out of 1000? Don't be so silly, he hit the crossbar.

I am pretty sure that isn't even what your silly xg stat means. I also didn't use the words making an impact but yes, going close to scoring is making an impact on a game of football.

Honestly haven't felt as excitement and promise from a United youngster since Greenwood. Let's hope he continues to develop.

Imagine having a go at Lacey for having that shot….it was a wonderful effort and we need more players capable of doing that!

It's exactly what the xG means. On average, shots taken from that position would result in a goal 3 times in every 1000 attempts. In case you weren't aware, hitting the crossbar isn't a goal, it isn't even on target.

It's lucky you're here to pour cold water on Utd fans getting excited about the first real impact from an academy lad. What would we do without such an important service!

First real impact. Not scoring a goal. We both also had that same real impact on the match tonight.

Imagine. A winger cutting into space on the edge of the box and having a shot to the far corner. The cheek of the lad.

So he is no Antony or Valencia then?

You said 0.03. That is 3 out of every hundred. It is also a complete nonsense way of looking at it because some players are better at shooting than others. He clearly has a talent for that type of shot. If he had that chance 1000 times you would have to be a complete fool to think he would only score 3 of them.

Yes players sometimes go close and don't manage to score. That doesn't mean they were wrong to try.

Capable of not scoring? We've got tons of those unfortunately.

It was a wonderful effort, I don't deny that, but it gained us nothing. 2 players were free in the box at the time the shot was taken, finding them would have been the option more likely to result in a goal.

There are posters suggesting he's the most exciting academy player in a decade on this thread, based on a short cameo that consisted of 7 touches, 3 passes, and 2 shots off target. Nothing else. That's the kind of hyperbole I'm trying to balance out.

Sit back and enjoy a compilation of shots that should never have been attempted.....

Burnley fans must be so conflicted with Jaidon Anthony right now.
