Seems to be making a real impression.

They must think they've signed peak Okocha. Fun times ahead at the Reebok Stadium.Bear in mind the bar is so low when you're a Bolton fan.
How badly?Turned it on to see how he’s doing and he gets injured and comes off within a couple of minutes.
It was MUTV doing it when he played!!
I think it was said that a family member of the player contacted the club and took issue with the pronunciation of his name on MUTV. MUTV then started calling him Sho ra teeray. It w

Please avoid checking up on our players in the future.Turned it on to see how he’s doing and he gets injured and comes off within a couple of minutes.
His dad's on the forum, surely we can just ask him to clear it up.It is a Yoruba name and i suspect Shola himself isn’t fluent in the language. His parents contacted MUTV to correct them about the pronunciation of the name which Shola himself apparently does not know.
It is Show-Ray-Ti-Reh.
That's what Shola thinks it is, but he appears to be wrong.Show-la Sure-tire it's easy
It didn't look good from what I saw.How badly?
So he doesn't know his own name..That's what Shola thinks it is, but he appears to be wrong.
Suspect he may be pronouncing it wrong himself
I knew someone called Siobhan who called herself “See-oh-barn” (that’s what her parents had called her, they’d seen the name in a baby names book) so yes, quite possiblySo he doesn't know his own name..
It’s not uncommon with children of immigrantsSo he doesn't know his own name..
Odd if so.So he doesn't know his own name..
Ok normally your parents call your by your name tends to get in by the years. But okIt’s not uncommon with children of immigrants
That would make sense if it were the forename, but it’s a surname so more like to be heard regularly by the likes of teachers or peers, who won’t be aware of the origins of the name and often anglicise it. Or the child won’t have the same connection to the original name which represents a large part of the identity to the parents so will just go with whatever people say.Ok normally your parents call your by your name tends to get in by the years. But ok
That is the correct pronunciation Incase anyone was wondering. And yes, Shola doesn't seem fluent in the language, which is not surprising. I have seen similar Yoruba kids who mispronounce their own names - some even preferring the westernized pronunciation over the Yoruba pronunciation. Suppose that's the case with our lad here.It is a Yoruba name and i suspect Shola himself isn’t fluent in the language. His parents contacted MUTV to correct them about the pronunciation of the name which Shola himself apparently does not know.
It is Show-Ray-Ti-Reh.
That might be but at least in my youth I heard my full name a lot. Most of the time in the higher register. That would make sense if it were the forename, but it’s a surname so more like to be heard regularly by the likes of teachers or peers, who won’t be aware of the origins of the name and often anglicise it. Absolutely, when you were doing something wrong you got your full name yelled at you still the time. Not by your surname
Not in Yoruba culture. His parents would not be yelling out his full name (especially surname) no matter what he did.Absolutely, when you were doing something wrong you got your full name yelled at you still the time.
Really? who?His dad's on the forum, surely we can just ask him to clear it up.
Not doubting that for a minute. I will have to admit my absolute lack of knowledge for the West African language and dialects and the way it is pronounced. Not in Yoruba culture. His parents would not be yelling out his full name (especially surname) no matter what he did.
These names still have meanings that are easily understood by people who speak the language unlike Western names.
You have got to understand the language for it to make sense enough in order to pronounce it right though. Shore-Tyre or Sure-Tyre has no meaning and it’s basically a nonsense word.
His parents would pronounce it Show-Ray-Ti-Reh.
Can't remember what his account's called, he came into the youth forum to tell everyone off.Really? who?
That’s cool he’s here. Is he active? And why was he vexed? Can't remember what his account's called, he came into the youth forum to tell everyone off.
@chattichattychattaReally? who?
You'd think his parents might have had a word with him ahead of telling MUTV!It is a Yoruba name and i suspect Shola himself isn’t fluent in the language. His parents contacted MUTV to correct them about the pronunciation of the name which Shola himself apparently does not know.
It is Show-Ray-Ti-Reh.
Yeah, the Gallaghers from Oasis don't know their own names either. It’s not uncommon with children of immigrants
Go back a few pages, find a few lads calling him "shite" and see his dads response to his 16/17 year old son playing in United's first team.Really? who?
And people wonder why these kids aren't chucked into the first team more often...Go back a few pages, find a few lads calling him "shite" and see his dads response to his 16/17 year old son playing in United's first team.
