McNulty is great. And there isn’t really any one “main character” in The Wire. Plenty of episodes and arcs where he’s just not involved.
Nah - he is, or is as close to it. Seasons 1, 3 and 5 are strongly led by him despite being ensembles still. But yeah, he's certainly got moments, but 5 kinda kills him for me so I agree I think..... Simon just randomly switches him back to what he was in season 1 to no mega gain as his arc is wildly considered the weakest aspect on that season. Either way, he's not massively relevant to this thread, on rewatches, I don't even always rewatch 5 anyway, therefor removing that.

Think they've all been mentioned though really, the daddy is probably Ted though innit, or Jerry or Jack from LOST - mostly for anything, being relatively normal. You can get away with that.

Huey in The Boys, I think I'm meant to care when he's in peril but honestly I just hope he suffers.

The girl from Devs. Not sure if it was just because she was a shit actor but she wound me up.
She was atrocious, whoever hired the person who hired her deserves firing.

Richard in Silicon Valley. His 'socially awkward programmer' thing got on my nerves and, well, the others were just more interesting anyway.

Rob Lowe in The West Wing. Rewatching it now, and he was meant to be the star, but turned into a nothing character who you don’t even notice when he departs.

Jack in LOST.

Michael in Prison Break.

Basically most characters in the big American dramas that came out in the naughties.

More recently, Jon Snow in GoT. Currently rewatching the whole thing and the way his character turns into a pointless side character essentially ruined years of build.

You're lucky I've figured this out before it happens because I'm around that part watching it for the first time now.

Spaced. I like Tim and Daisy but the other characters are better.
:houllier: tripe! Daisy is possibly the best character in anything ever. Also the other characters only work in tandem with Tim and Daisy. There's only 14 episodes so it's not like the other characters had significant depth beyond their interactions with Tim and Daisy.

Eren in Attack On Titan. Whiniest little bitch I've ever seen in a tv show.

Ragnar in Vikings. Why the actor has decided to play him as though he’s constantly high is beyond me.

Inspired by the HIMYM thread

Ted Mosby is a good shout. Dylan in Scrotal Recall/Lovesick is another one.

We have one episode left of Home Before Dark and while Hilde might not be “the worst” thing about it, there are an awful lot of examples moments where she just comes across as a poorly socialised arsehole and her parents just say “lol well that’s Hilde!” And I think we’re supposed to laugh. The writers also really struggled to portray how children talk/behave consistently.
I think you nailed it. I'm not sure there's a more unlikable lead than Ted Mosby. There's nothing sweet about his obsequiousness and his general desperation.

Not sure if they qualify as they are all from shows with multiple main characters but I can't stand Bart and Lisa Simpson.

Also find Kyle Broflovski from South Park to be a bit annoying.

You could also include Game of Thrones on this list. Obviously it has a few main characters, but two of them, Daenerys and Jon Snow, are both god awful (perhaps excluding the first season).
I mentioned in The Expanse thread how they are suffering from the same thing: two of the long-term mains in the ensemble not carrying their weight. Holden is basically Jon Snow in space.

My favorite sitcom and one of my favorite TV shows of all time, but I agree.

It's not that he's a terrible character. It's just that literally everyone else is great  Hal is of course the best, though.
I think it is massively underrated, for me I think it hurt from being right...before? After?...the Simpsons on Sky One on a, I think, Sunday night. Never felt like the main event, given the Simpsons peak was probably the greatest ever comedy. I imagine a decent amount of MITM’s comedy went over my head when I was really young

Entourage. The guy plays a movie star and is a terrible actor, as well as generally a bit of a dick.
Arguably the guy who is trying to be his manager (forgot his name) is the main character?!

I think Leslie Knope, Richard in Silicon Valley and - relative to the rest of the show - McNulty are good shouts. Don't necessarily agree on Carrie in Homeland: on one hand keeping her on through so many seasons creates a burden to continuously escalate things beyond the reasonable, but on the other hand her erratic character is what made the show in the first season.

It's not like you can just lose the character, but relatively speaking Will Graham was far from the best version the character could have been in Hannibal.
Not sure if she is "the" main character in Westworld, but I think Maeve's arc should have been concluded and now it seems more like they are forcibly tagging her along.

How has the Big Bang Theory not been mentioned? There are plenty of things not to like about the show, but lets be honest, Sheldon is top of the list. Also Howard's wife is the most dis-likable character I can think of in a TV series that you're supposed to like. Its a show I've seen more of than I'd have liked.

Also, do these pseudo-reality shows like Made in Chelsea count? Never have I wished for a nuclear apocalypse more than when I found myself watching that for a few minutes, or just a power cut would have done it I guess.

I'm assuming shows where pretty every character is bad isn't on the agenda here is why these aren't mentioned?

Fair enough. You could reasonably argue that the other Big Bang characters are alright, they're certainly much less annoying.

The 10 minutes of "Two and a half Men" I watched post Charlie Sheen were pretty terrible. I nominate Ashton Kutcher.

What are the other ones? I'd say Mad Men, The Wire, Breaking Bad and The Sopranos (although it premiered in 1999) are the main ones from that period. I like their protagonists, although I can see McNulty has gotten a couple of mentions.

They're the exceptions. Also sure Mad Men was a little later.

Mad Men premiered in 2007.

I couldn't quite put my finger on how to describe his performance but this is it.

Who's the other? Naomi?

I'm sure you don't mean Wes Chatham's Amos.

Iron fist.

The guy was a terrible actor, didn't seem to have actual fight knowledge, and the character itself was written so that he was basically a little bitch. Supposedly the best martial artist in the world and he got his ass handed to him left right and centre

For me it was Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad, I actually couldn't bring myself to watch it anymore because of him, I struggled through season 1 and some of season 2 and gave up.

If I could pixelate his face and change his voice I might. I gave up on it about 6 years ago, my wife watched the whole thing. I just can't do it.

I've probably completely misremembered when things got released. I know I'm always guilty of forgetting that The Wire and Sopranos were really early.

I'm talking around the time LOST and Prison Break came out in around 2005. It felt like every week there was some new American drama being released.
