Another question - how many of those 20 players have we improved? Which ones played better for us than they did at their previous club/s?

Time signed order
Best:
Pogba
Zlatan
Bailly
Lukaku
Matic
Martial
Herrera
Mata

Worst:
Schneiderlin
Depay
Darmian
Schweinsteiger
Di Maria
Falcao
Fellaini (just)

The others are either in between (Miki, Rojo, Blind) or could yet prove themselves good signings (Lindelof, Sanchez, Shaw). May have forgotten a couple.

Best - Matic, Bailly and Lukaku
Worst - Everyone else
Classic negativity, we've signed players who have won us games against rivals and trophies, but it's still not good enough for some..

Best. The list is dire. Lukaku and Matic?
Worst - you can lump everyone else in there. 2 sign 2 CB's and they cant get a game between them is scary. Pogba decent in flashes, but those flashes are few and far between.

Best - players that were bought for a purpose and fit that purpose excellently
Matic, Zlatan, Romero

Good - players that improve the team but haven't reached expectations (yet?)
Pogba, Lukaku, Mata, Martial, Bailly, Herrera

Average - not bad, but not that good either
Fellaini, Blind, Rojo

Poor - players that had some promise but ultimately haven't offered as much as we hoped
Di Maria, Mkhitaryan, Shaw, Lindelof

Terrible - players that offered nothing
Schneiderlin, Darmian, Schweinsteiger, Falcao, Valdes, Depay

Best transfer - De Gea, well he was basically a RM player
Worst transfer - Depay
None of the players bought since SAF has been an absolute success, kind of depressing. Even Matic is looking very poor lately.
I would put Schweistiger and Schneiderlin as 2nd and 3rd worst deal. Hardly play them, practically write off on investment.

Best and worst is too simplistic, in my opinion. I really can't think of any that have lived up to expectations.

We didn't get the Mata of 11/12
We didn't get the Schneirderlin of 12-14
We didn't get the di Maria of 13/14
Neither the Depay of 14/15
The Mkhi of 15/16

The same applies to a lot of our players. Maybe we've failed them or they've failed us. The last time we got the best out of a player we signed was RvP 12/13.
I fully agree with this, to put these players in hit and miss boxes is to easy. All those players were scouted at some time or another and bought to strengthen our team, nearly all were exciting prospects (the names we knew) when they joined and everyone was happy they were a Red.
Just take a moment and look at that list of names, players that have come and gone, not one has lit up the skies or have lived up to their hype/potential which is very concerning. If it were one or two players it is to be expected but what are we as a club or manager's team etc doing wrong that we are not getting the best out of the players we buy or improving the players we have or have bought.

Losing to Comeback Winning!
1st Best Matic
2nd Best Lukaku

Very Good
Mata - longest and most consistent good squad player. Recent signs of waning though.
Zlatan - did what he can with his retiring body.
Romero - gem 2nd keeper.

Good
Herrera - quality and good squad player (Seasons 1-Good 2-Bad 3-Superb 4-Hit and miss).
Pogba - hit and miss, big potential, made many contributions already but obv many fans still aren't satisfied...
Martial - huge potential and strong contributor of goals.
Bailly - scary potential.
Blind - quality but inconsistent (Seasons 1-Hit and miss 2-Very good 3-Okay 4-Bad).
Rojo - quality but glass body.
Fellaini - can't ignore his contributions. Hit and miss.

Just okay for now..
Lindelof - good potential, promising signs.
Sanchez - hit and miss, can and should do a lot more.
Shaw - good potential.

Average
Darmian - one good defensive role season out of three, can't ignore he helped win two trophies in that one season.
Mkhitaryan - did much better than these below. Counter attacks and Scorpion. Prefer to be in a stress free environment... not here.

Bad
Di Maria - some good performances. Gave up too soon.
Falcao - scored few goals.
Depay - just one amazing game iirc, given enough chances.
Valdez
Schweinsteiger
Worst Schneiderlin - maybe harsh, but i have no idea what he's doing here.

*Ignoring their price tags/wages. Prioritizing their contributions, overall performances, potentials and professionalism.*

No one really. I mean Pogba, Lukaku and the rest are not looking like a top player they supposedly should be. Matic is a destroyer in midfield, so i think in the eyes of many fans he kind of 'gets a pass', also it's obviously much better to be a DCM in Jose's team. But you look at our major games this season including CL, in many of them Matic was never to be seen.
Matic kind of symbolizes United today, a team that works hard most of the time, but completely devoid of any flair.

These guys have disappointed as well and should be lower.

Angel Di Maria sums up everything

Brilliant coup, signing the man who got the Motm in the CL for Real Madrid just months earlier, and we make him look like a League one player.

We didn't make him look a league one player the guy had the worst attitude I have ever seen from a Utd player

Fergie's Backyard.
The top signing is by far Lukaku. The rest I really don't care too much for. Bailly looks decent but seems to have injury issues.

Di Maria, Lukaku and Pogba would have been great signings if we had a cohesive team with a set idea of play. We could sign anyone and they’d look worse here..

I don't understand how you can dismiss them already since they are still at the club. Haven't set the world alight but hopefully they have a long future ahead

Our transfers in:

Lukaku: 80 million - Good - but we know we haven't got the best out of him yet
Matic: 40 million - Good
Lindelof: 32 million - Very poor Looks a scandalously poor choice so far

Pogba: 95 million Good - but we're frustrated as we know he should be dominating ever week
Mkhitaryan: 40 million Decent in patches, but two major spells of having to just be left out made it an all in poor signing
Bailly: 38 million Good - yet doubts in the latter half about injuries and whether he can even keep Smalling-Jones out
Zlatan: Free Good - and even then he seemed to miss loads

Martial: 55 million Fairly good - but difficult last 6 months to see if he has a role
Depay: 30 million Very poor - aside from bullying a couple of dutch teams, pure mediocrity. For a free kick expert couldn't keep one on the pitch
Schniderlin: 30 million Average - just didn't provide much
Darmian: 16 million Average - strong first month, then just pure average since. Probably not completed 90mins without a booking more than 5 times
Romero: Free Good - for the role planned, very good
Schweinstiger: 8 million Average - not the superstar of old, but particularly bad, just average

Di Maria: 67 million Poor - excellent first month, then attitude and form fell to pieces
Shaw: 30 million Average - so much expected, and the good form has been long forgotten. Just average to date
Herrera: 30 million Good - has been decently good so far. Suspect he hasn't quite got enough in the locker to be a league winning team starter
Rojo: 16 million Average. One great spell, but otherwise poor to average usually.
Blind: 16 million Average - Decent squad fill

Mata: 40 million Fairly good - but has never quite fir the bill for us, through some less than flowing attacking teams
Fellaini: 30 million Average - some good goals, and has his perks, but generally average
Game of opinions..here's my take added abiove

I find it hard not to give Mata full marks. Played well during a shite period and never moaned when he's been out of the team. A great man and leader by example. Wish we'd have signed him under Fergie.

In terms of purely how they've played for us and the money we spent to get them. Ignoring prior reputations, what they can become in the future, etc.

Best:
  1. Herrera - Won the player of the year for us in 16/17, loads of quality big game performances, key part to our big moments though they've been few.
  2. Ibrahimovic - Tight call between him and Herrera. But finally someone who had the right personality to put the team on his back, and despite his age and everything, he did that for one season and was a key part in us winning 2 trophies (+ community shield) that season.
  3. Matic - Ever present last season and for the most part, was very good and a huge part in our defensive record (him and De Gea the biggest factors despite the shit around them). Price wasn't a bargain but not outrageously expensive.
  4. Blind - People may laugh, but until last season, he was basically a key player for us. 2 seasons with Van Gaal he was one of our most reliable players, and in Mourinho's first season he played a huge part and was very reliable whenever called upon. Did well in big games, brought a lot of control and composure to a mess of a team, and generally did well. Good price too for what he provided in his first 3 seasons.
  5. Lukaku - Had a good season overall, but could have done better still and the price is still way too much for him, but still did well and improved as the year went on to give you hope.
Worst:
  1. Di Maria - Obviously. Had high hopes for him, and believe he would've been a great signing all the same had someone other then LvG been in charge. But that fee for a player that opposite to his play style.... ended poorly.
  2. Shaw - 30m for a teenage fullback was a huge fee at the time. He's barely played and even excusing the leg break season off, he's always had questions about fitness, determination, etc. If he ever makes it, it won't be at United.
  3. Memphis - Such big hopes, never even looked like he had even the raw talent to say it was a mentality issue. Looked out of place in the premier league. Doing well at Lyon now though (or improved loads in the last few months and showing his effectiveness).
  4. Darmian - Purely average, was meant to come in and be our long term right back, not even good enough to be an adequate back up despite the huge bonus of being able to play either side (equally poorly though tbh).
  5. Pogba - The fact that the other 4 were complete and utter flops helps keep him at just 5th, but lets not kid ourselves. Ignore prior reputation or some perceived potential, and let's look at just what he's done since he's been here. He's been a liability. And came in for a world record transfer fee at the time. We make signing after signing, tactical adjustment after adjustment (and for him, it's not a case of lets just blame Mourinho. He's shit for France too) and whatever else just to accomodate him in the starting 11 just so we aren't a mess on the pitch. He got dropped for some of our biggest games, got regularly taken off in the past 6 months, and just was playing really badly. All this talk about "we need to get the best out of him"... What exactly is this best? The hope that one of his billion 40 yard attempts go in so he scores from range? That's a stroke of luck, that's not getting him to play his best. He needs to show that he deserves to be pandered to in the first place.
Mkhitaryan just misses out, due to Pogba's fee. Could easily put Lindelof in there too based on just the 1 season, basically adding nothing, though I'm sure he'll improve going forward. Or Schneiderlin or Schweinsteiger. The others can put in the average column, neither good nor really bad.
