Sir Alex

Damn, hopefully, it gets made available for us not living in the UK.

Watched it new years eve . Its on Iplayer BBC its very good enjoyed it.

It's a good one. Some lovely footage from old matches and interviews with SAF plus some new interviews, mostly with ex-players.

What channel was it on on new years im trying to get it on catch up

I watched both parts - I think it's a really well put together documentary about Sir Alex, his roots and where a lot of his drive and determination came from as a player and as a manager. Well worth a watch.

Watched it in iplayer. Very good. Can be easy to forget how good we were for so long with the numbing of the last 12 years. That 08’ team he built for a third time was incredible.

Don't have i player im afraid, thought it might have been on TV
Part 1 was on late on Monday night on BBC1 so it should be easy to find on on catch-up. Part 2 is tonight on BBC1.
iPlayer has both so it depends on your catch-up service whether it's available to you yet.

I watched the first part last night. His achievements at Aberdeen are often understated - quite phenomenal breaking the old firm monopoly and winning a European trophy. They didn't even have a proper training ground at the time either, having to use dog shit strewn public parks and the beach, if the tide was out.
There's also a documentary about Mark Hughes on tonight on BBC Wales (and iPlayer).

The stat that Aberdeen were the last team to beat Real Madrid in a European cup final blows my mind.

Thanks for the heads up on the Hughes documentary. Was always my 2nd favourite player (after Robson and then Cantona) The 91 Cup Winner Cup final remains my favourite United game. Made me laugh in the documentary when Beckham says, "England teams hadn't been doing well in Europe in 1991", yeah maybe that's what a 5 year ban from Europe does!

Amazing to remember how close he was to the sack in the late 80s. Seems like Bobby Charlton was his biggest advocate. Imagine if they'd sacked him and got Bobby Robson or Venables in or such like. I still think his Aberdeen spell is un-matched, much like Clough at Forest winning Euro trophies with provincial teams won't happen again. (Unless Forest keep going the way they are).

In the early 1990s I worked in a bar in Chester and one of the doormen was godfather to one of Hughes' kids. Anyway, when I found this out I asked him if he got free tickets for United games. He said "No, I've got absolutely no interest in football". Fair play, Hughes must have loved having mates like that who didn't just want to talk about football and hassle him for free tickets and shirts etc.

Would have loved a reconstruction or two. From his infamous fights.

Seen part one... I'd forgotten the massive rant after Aberdeen had won the Scottish Cup. He went balistic with the team

I think that was more to do with him hating Rangers at that point (which he referred to in another documentary). He basically wanted his Aberdeen team to humiliate them 4 or 5 nil.

He's since said he regrets that, but yeah, a different response to winning a cup

I enjoyed it, especially as they spoke about '08 so much. Usually these things cap off the story in '99.

I enjoyed it but I don't think there was much new in the second part.
I've always thought his most outstanding achievements are what he accomplished with Aberdeen. That being said, I know a few people that give a lot of credit to his predecessor there, Billy McNeill.

I thought the lack of mention of Roy Keane was a glaring omission.

It would have been pointless to mention Keane, given how high profile Keane is now he would get asked about it and it would just drag everything up again. Everything that has needed to be said has been said.

Well yes but they mentioned probably every other significant player under him. Not to mention him at all in terms of the treble... he was as big a part of that as Cole, Yorke, Giggs etc.

I knew very little about the circumstances around him managing Scotland in the World Cup after the death of Jock Stein. His post match interview after the Uruguay game was classic Fergie in his earlier years.

Also, loved seeing Rooney knee sliding in front of the City fans after Van Persie's winner  never seen that clip before.

Watched it recently, was very good

Again it kept coming back to how the players would run through walls for him, and he knew when the right time was to move someone on, because no one is bigger than the club

Wonder how that approach would be received by this over pampered, over paid bunch, there's far too much player power enabled now

No manager will be as successful as him

Still felt despair at seeing Moyes appear at the end. Unfortunately probably his biggest mistake. Going from probably the greatest manager ever... to Moyes...

Also seeing some of the teams he built vs what we have now was equally depressing

agreed - not sure the 08 team was better than that of 99, which one of two people believed
Even if we call it even in other areas of the pitch, Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez were another planet to Cole and Yorke, and tactically, we were more consistent in that run from 06-09. I say this as someone whose childhood heroes ALL make up that 99 team as well. 08 was just better.

yeh but 99 didn't just have cole and yorke, also had sheringham and Ole... I'm never quite sure which is better... maybe 08 defence was physically stronger

99's midfield is their strength, up among the very best.

Our 08 one left a bit to be desired.

Scholes was still world-class, Hargreaves and Carrick were just below that, Fletcher and Anderson were quite competent, as was Giggs when played in midfield.

But I agree that the strengths of that team were the defense and attack. VDS, Rio, Vidic and Evra in defense were all among the best in the world in their position, and then Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez being fantastic in attack, especially the first two.

True, it was still pretty good but I'd say it was slightly getting behind the times, especially evident against barca later on while the 99 team had solid case towards being considered the very best of it's time.

It's a tricky comparison all around, 08 attack is clearly superior personel wise but then york and seemed to have defied biology and achieved symbiosis that year so you can't go wrong there.
