So they are addressing their backline with Robertson (captain?), Senesi and van Hecke, while chasing Tonali who is rumoured to have been offered a staggering amount at Spurs. And yet their frontline is probably what is the biggest issue in the side, with regards to quality. They obviously require ball players at the back to implement De Zerbi’s style of play but it will be interesting to see whether this will actually get them back into the top 6 or just mid table with many players earning top 3 wages.

In 2014/15 Leicester City finished on 41 points with a goal difference of -9.

The following season their Italian manager led them to the Premier League title.

In 2025/26 Spurs finished on 41 points with a goal difference of -9.

Decide to part ways after he's fell out with everyone at the club........

When you look at the league this season no reason they can't get back up to where Bournemouth and Sunderland finished.

We've seen last few seasons a side with big squad not playing any form of Europe helps massively.

Defensively will be better and they were more solid in midfield in the run in. Need more creativity but this is where it gets interesting. Do they splurge now as all of Maddison, Kudus, Kuluveski will surely play more next season and that's a lot of wages to leave on the bench buying more first choices. Odobert and Xavi Simons will also be back early 2027.

This is the honeymoon period anyway as no doubt next summer they'll start to miss out on key targets and De Zerbi will start throwing grenades in the press just as Mourinho and Conte did.

They are targeting the correct players anyway. Let’s see who they land.

Clearly they need a goal scorer, but sorting out defence and midfield first is smarter.

They will end up missing out on their top targets Tonali and Mateus, and will overpay for players like Baleba or Scott (if he doesn't join Liverpool) I assume, to not embarrass themselves. Decent signings still, but not the ones they thought would get.

Also lowkey hoping for them to sign Mason G for big money to help us financially.

This’ll be fun.

A relatively new manager, no European football, a few new players, (importantly) less injuries.

Reckon they’ll get top 6.

Robertson is old and past it, Senesi is a shrewd free transfer and Van Hecke is decent albeit overpriced, not sure any of them 3 are much better than what they already have at the back though.

Senesi is a great signing. Not sure they really needed to buy Van Hecke as well, unless maybe both Romero and Van de Ven are leaving. They are bidding big for Tonali...who I suppose improves them, but they still have Sarr, Bergvall, Gray, Gallagher (?), Bentancur, Maddison, so if they can get them fit their central midfield is not their biggest problem either. i suppose they can get Kulusevski back but Richarlison and Solanke are just ok, and they seem to have no good option on the left, unless maybe Simons can get back and do better. Not so sure they are going after the right players. A keeper, a left winger and maybe a striker would seem like the best positions to aim at.

They finished 17th twice in a row and only just survived on the final day. The majority of the squad are not very good.
No point denying that.

However, Utd finished 15th …a season without European football and virtually no domestic cup football, they finished 3rd. I’d be surprised if Spurs don’t qualify for Europe.

United didn't finish 17th twice though, Spurs finished 17th with multiple managers not just one fraud. United also have a much better squad and Spurs have no player on the level of Bruno Fernandes so it is not the same.

Yes Bruno’s best season ever, almost single handed got Utd 3rd place, though not sure he could do it twice on the trot? …especially with CL football to cope with as well.

Who knows? Time will tell. …It’s certainly going to be an interesting season.

They need to add a consistent supply of goals to the side. I don’t doubt their team will improve but without goals they’ll not make as much improvement as they should

Agree with this.
Think they are making good improvements, but they were terrible in attack and defense last season, and i don't think they have done anything to improve their attack.

I think they will be better next season, but unless they get a good attacker in, i struggle to see them qualifying for europe.

Not sure I really rate any of their signings so far. Senesi is nice on a free, but I don’t think he is any better than what they already have. van Hecke is error prone and that seems to have gone under the radar. Ability wise, I don’t think it’s an upgrade.

Robertson is good experience but has been on the way down for a few seasons now.

They still don’t have a top keeper, a top central midfielder or even a high quality attacking player across the front 3.

If “meaning business” means Senesi, Robertson, Van Hecke and overpaying for Tonali, I don’t think anyone should be too worried.

Some players coming back from injuries, good PL experienced players added already and if they get a decent striker.

All dependent how quickly they get bedded in and how they start, could be as high as top 6. That run-in is horrible though.

Injury prone players as they have missed many of the same players for two seasons in a row.

I think Senesi and Van Hecke solve a lot of their biggest issues defensively. Van Der Ven isnt very good, but he'd be okay as 4th choice or as an option for leftback. Senesi and Van Hecke were among the best CBs last season. And Romero was probably Spurs best player and on his day is a top CB. So him plus Senesi or Van Hecke will be far more solid - assuming Spurs arent selling him and thats why they've signed 2 CBs that are starter quality.

Roberson adds more issues. He's been poor for a couple of seasons which is why Liverpool got rid. He might still be a better backup leftback than Udogie who was poor but Udogie is young and can be developed while Robertson is on the decline. Then theres fitting Van Der Ven in unless they sell him. He can play leftback using his pace and ability with the ball - its where Netherlands are playing him in the world cup. But Spurs dont need 4 leftback options with Spence, Udogie, now signing Robertson and Van Der Ven. So they should either sell him or use him at leftback

Another big issue is goals. Richalrison was their only decent goalscorer last season. So wingers and attack minded midfielders need to do much better. Kudus and Simons at least got assists, though not enough goals themselves... But that does leave the burden for goals with the other winger. Thats usually Tel and 4 goals 1 assist is quite poor. I remember before they signed him loads of posters wanted us to splash the cash on him. What a bullet dodged

With Palhinha's loan finishing they would seem to need a new CM. Gallagher has been unconvincing but can do a job as 1 of the 2 CMs. I used to rate Sarr but that was back when Spurs were playing 3 CMs. In a 2 he doesnt seem to fit. Obviously they're linked with Tonali and Fernandes... If they have the money and can convince him Fernandes would be a great buy. Tonali would be okay depending on the price. And then they need a left winger and Summerville would make some sense for them, but its very unlikely they'd get both Fernandes and Summerville from West Ham. Probably just Summerville as an upgrade on Tel

Taking shape, eh? I do hope they spend another similar amount on another midfielder, and have Fernandes, Tonali? and Gallagher all earning close to 300K. I also hope players like Kulusevski, van de Ven and Maddison will all ask for parity. It's going to be a costly operation. And I really hope they will not qualify for Europe.

De Zerbi will leave by January/February. Not that he's bad, it just won't work with the leadership there.

Feels like one of those where it's going to go really well for them or really badly. They're spending big and will be expecting to leap up to CL spots like you did.

I think so too. It’s not easy bedding in what will probably be well over half a new team bu the end of the summer (I read they wanted 8 new players). Their last couple of seasons have been so bad it’s worth the gamble but if it goes pear shaped for them, it’s a long way back having sunk the cash they are doing into it.

Fernandes will improve them a lot in midfield. He's one of those types that will be like two players in the right midfield structure.

However to get CL they need better final third players I think so interested who they target. Savinho been rumoured for a few months and their name is tentatively being linked to Marcus Rashford.

So what is their starting 11 likely to be at the moment? Assuming Romero leaves

Kinsky
Porro - Van Hecke - Sensei - VdV
Gallagher - Fernandes
Kudus - Maddison - Tel
Solanke

Quite weak upfront although they could also play Odobert as LW who is better than Tel out there. Not sure if they’ll have enough for another wide forward but they’ll be quite toothless if Solanke gets injured, as Richalison is not quite that level, and they’re relying on Kudus being decent after his lengthy time away.

Still after Tonali and I don’t see Maddison being there.

They aren’t sniffing top 5 without getting an attacker that contributes 20+ G/A.

Unironically the money they are spending on Fernandes and Tonali on transfer fees and wages would be much better utilized just getting someone like Osimhen in. If Kudus, Maddison et al manages to stay healthy next season and Simmons kicks it up a notch, they have enough creativity to feed a forward of that caliber to have a decent season.

They were in pretty similar situation to us last summer and they have spunk the majority of their budget not on their direst need.

There's too much going on to predict their results and performances but if there's one thing RDZ is gonna do, it's implement that positional square of 4 players with the intention of baiting a press, beating it and progressing through the middle. From the 2 CBs to the 2 MFs to 2 AMs etc. If Spurs are going to bet big and get the profile of players for it, like they have with Fernandes, his style of football could be very progressive IF it works out.

I hope it all fails miserably of course but I would be lying if I didn't say I do admire that positional and midfielding aspect of his teams.

I agree they need more in attack to have a realistic chance at top five. But I think they actually have the right idea in terms of team building. They're entering this summer needing a big change on all three lines. If they focused on attack, they might score more but they wouldn't necessarily be building anything for the longer term because they couldn't play the way that De Zerbi (or any similar minded manager who eventually succeeds him) wants to play. Focusing on defense and midfield allows De Zerbi to implement his system, start training the team in the way he wants to play, and lay the longer term foundations for a strong side.
