How many assistant managers do we know who have won league titles or managed England in their own right?

We did well here. Even is Steve Mac is old school, we need a balance for ten Hags new school style.

I was too young when he was SAFs assistant but from what I've read he's supposed to have been an absolutely top class number 2, in more than just one instance. I feel like this is a really sensible appointment. I like both of ETHs assistants.
hopefully they live stream pinning him down and forcing him to join the Pep Guardiola is my idol squad.

Fair play to McLaren for considering this as not many would do that. It also goes to show the high regard in which he places Ten Hag.

Yeah, I'm surprised balding wasn't part of the deal. He has tried to be Dutch, it's not hard to be bald, you just need some fecking clippers. Come on Steve.
aye. he can’t expect the players to buy into the philosophy if he doesn’t.

I like that ETH dug his heels in and he is getting the assistants he wants, not someone the club want. The latter has failed time after time since SAF left.

Yes, this is hopefully a good omen for what’s to come. I don’t see the club has leverage after how awful recruitment in both coaching and players has been over the last 9 years.

Why do we need to balance ten hags style, balance it in what way?

I believe that to make the best decisions, you need the counter-opinion of someone who sees the game differently from you in your staff. Sometimes you just need a different pair of eyes to solve a problem.

That said, if McLaren can just do basic things like improving set-piece routines and help instill the old United mentality back, he'll already be worth his salary.

Having another opinion is good, but we need to get far away from oldschool.

We are. McLaren is only part of the support team (and fair play to him for agreeing to take a step down). It will be Erik's ideas that will be implemented first and foremost.

What happens to Phelan?
I'd still like him to stay because I can imagine having the input of both McClaren and Phelan offers great insight into the PL and United. And neither will have any delusions about taking the hotseat down the line, its in their interests that Ten Hag does well.

However, it's up to Ten Hag. He'll only perform his best if the coaching team is as he wants it. Maybe having both will stop it being a streamlined system.

I'm 90% sure that Phelan will leave

Glad to see Shteev back. SAF rated him and he was at the club during our most successful period. He must have done something right.

Is McClaren and van der gaag both assistant manager? When have we ever had 2 assistant managers? Normally we have 1 and then a few coaches. It’s good for ten Hag to have the 2 people he most wanted working along side him.. he obviously trusts them a lot and think they’ll help us become successful.

Der Gaag is the assistant and McClaren is assistant to the assistant manager.

December 2022: Man United are languishing in 8th.

Laurie Whitwell: “Dressing room sources have claimed that senior players consider Steve McClaren ‘outdated’. His methodical training methods have not gone down well with the players, who believe that training should be about cheerful 5 a side games.”

It’ll be great to see him back in the dugout. I was a bit too young to appreciate him there when he was with Fergie, but I have a very hazy flashback of seeing him sat there. Will be great for the nostalgia point of view but also because he clearly had a good relationship with Ten Hagg.

Good to see him back, brings good memories of my early days watching United. He’s very experienced now and I hope he helps ETH settle into the league and contribute to us going back to a team that is relevant

I see this as a similar appointment as Brian Kidd getting the assistant manager at citeh.

Fair play to Kidd who kept the position under Mancini, Pelligrini and St. Pep.

McClaren knows English football, United (how it should be) and probably a bit about the workings in the club.

He's made an arse of himself with his daft Dutch accent, episode with the brolly and his sky sports commentary but hopefully his insights will help Ten Hag put a decent structure in place.

If he's old school in his coaching methods, let's be honest and say the majority of this squad need a kick in the cock and if that's what it takes, let's hope he goes in all boots flying.

I listened to his podcast a few episodes ago about ETH and it was really interesting. The same episode he talks about the title race, liverpool and city and goes into detail about how important modern goalkeepers are. How they have to almost be an outfield player, good on the ball, pick passes, be brave and commanding. If ETH thinks the same way I can’t see De Gea lasting long.

There's nothing modern about that. That's Barthez!

Rare to see someone who has won league titles as a manager and has been the manager of a major national team to downgrade to become an assistant manager.

Anyone remember similar cases like Steve?

Former Manchester United assistant manager Steve McClaren gushes over Scott McTominay claiming the only negative about him is that ‘he’s Scottish’!

Steven McClaren was lyrical about Scott McTominay and the performances he has been producing for Manchester United.

McTominay put in a man of the match display to help his side reach the FA Cup fourth round at Aston Villa’s expense and former England boss McClaren joked the only bad thing about the Scotland international is his nationality!

Wow, what a player,” the former Old Trafford assistant manager said on talkSPORT the morning after the win.

“I think a player who has matured, taken responsibility and is probably one of them players that is a little bit unsung, does all the hard work, great attitude, doesn’t get the credit that he deserves and he’s [now] getting that.

You put him on the field and he delivers, he’s a Manchester United player, seven or eight out ten every week that’s what makes a Manchester United player,” adding that he has what any manager wants from their stars.

He breaks up play, he’s box-to-box, he’s got energy, attitude, can deal with the ball, gets into the box and can score goals, he’s doing very well.”

In fact, he’s so good former England boss McClaren playfully finished with: “The only thing is he’s Scottish!”

Previous manager Jose Mourinho gave McTominay his debut and loved the player’s personality, while current manager Ralf Rangnick said he wouldn’t be surprised if he’s United captain in a few years.

If McClaren think that shit is good enough for our midfield, then it doesn't bode well for the future.

Or maybe professional managers actually know more about the players and the sport than fans? McT maybe constant being played out of position or in roles that doesn't sync with his skillsets?

The forum has gone to shit the past few years -- people can post that a player is both completely useless and played well in the same matchday thread.

Or the amount of 20/20 hindsight visions that goes on.

Anyone who has managed people or things besides vending machines will know that mistakes are always made. You can tell the team what to do but they don't always follow instructions despite constant training routines.

These guys are the 1% of the 1% that actually make it to the very top. It's hard getting there and they are certainly physically different than the rest of us. (Trust me I have played non-football sports with a couple of them. They are just gifted -- supremely coordinated, fast-twitch muscles, smart etc)

Its never black & white when it comes to performance -- both as a player and/or as a manager. I cant relate to them as players but certainly can relate easier as a person who has managed organisations.
There is so much binary level slagging off a United player or assist/manager -- without knowing the facts, inside knowledge or even personal experiences in managing teams or as professional players.

Posters here need to develop some level of self-awareness before slagging off players and managers or at least provide some level of detailed discussion or depth when criticising the players/managers.

The moderators here have an unenviable task of having to read through so much crap over the past few years.

Even rarer when it's to become an assistant to someone who has been your assistant previously!

Let's hope Shteve is confident enough a person to play that role effectively -- and not turn out as a person who needs the limelight on him as an assistant to boost his ego.
Rene would have been my choice -- I think player development has stagnated in the past 10 yrs or more -- even under Fergie. Rene would have helped.

Knowing more doesn’t mean they are right about everything, and if he thinks Mctominay is a 7 or 8 most weeks he probably hasn’t seen him play much or is talking nonsense.

I don’t think too much should be read into things Mcclaren has said over past year or so, it’s very different making comments to media as opposed to actually being part of the coaching team.

I like McClaren but the problem with a McTominay 7 or 8/10 performance is the equivalent of a 5 or 6/10 performance from a good midfielder.

I pray ETH sees him (and Fred) as no more than a bench option at best. Wouldn’t mind if either or preferably both were sold. Never happening but one can dream.
