Im watching over here in EnZed our antivax/conspiracy nut/qanon types become more and more unhinged. They are doing that whole thing where they are self appointing themselves as Sheriffs and demanding entry into Govt buildings and courts etc. They keep getting more and more unhinged each week and the actual ringleaders are well established white supremacists and Nazi sympathisers. I would not be surprised if we see some sort of similar madness happen here too as has happened in Aussie this week. This madness is spreading, the antisemites seem to be happy to live out in the open now. Some of them are just really stupid people but some of them are dangerous and manipulative. I have no idea what the answer to this current mood is.
Far more restrictive gun laws and taking domestic/white supremacists/QANON type terrorists far more seriously would be a start I'd say.

They are going really well in most respects. Started to repair relationships with China and the pacific region. Starting to address some cost of living issues (energy) and global warming and associated issues slowly (finally) starting to get some priority and industrial affais has had a boost that should allow more wage rises to occur (preventing them was a key policy of the last government). Albanese has been a great PM so far and Penny Wong (Foreign Affairs) and Jim Charmers (the new finance minister) have also done really well. The overall strength and cooperation of the whole cabinet is noticeably better by an order of magnitude.
The country as a whole feels much better.

Not having an utter religious nutter at the helm is a huge upgrade.
His disgraceful robodebt performance brought it all back to me. Imagine being that much of a cnut that both the Chair and the lead counsel have to tell you to "answer the fecking question and stop interrupting".

Another premier another scandal. This time wearing a nazi uniform. Who'd have thought that most privileged dickheads would be just that. You just need to look at the shit that goes down at all boys schools in sydney to see the rot starts young.

NZ Pm Jacinda Adern has resigned.
That pretty much means we will have a new center right govt at the next election.
Best PM we I have seen here in my lifetime.

Shame for NZ, as from what I can gather she was one of the better politicians.
Best in the 60 years I have been on this planet but sadly the fallout from the pandemic and the massive misinformation/disinformation going on here has worn her down. We currently have compared to the rest of the world some of the lowest unemployment, lowest inflation, highest economic growth but unfortunately most NZers dont see it. I am worried about whats coming as its almost certain that a right wing govt will be in power at the end of October and they have plans for lowering taxes for the rich, lowering welfare assistance to prepandemic levels, killing off electric car purchase subsidies, lowering the minimum wage, stopping payments into our pension fund, resuming coal, oil and gas exploration, stopping the billion tree planting program and a long list of other things that will be bad for our future here in NZ.

Anecdotally, close cousins of mine and their families who moved to NZ 20 years ago have just shifted to Oz. Including kids that's around 10 people. Four of them are doctors (GPs) and one an IT specialist.

Their decision wasn't based on the change of government, though they probably foresaw some things, i.e. growing right wing tendencies. According to them the opportunities in NZ were stagnating if not diminishing.

Seems like their economy like everywhere else is in the shits - from November last year

New Zealand’s reserve bank has forecast that the country will tip into recession in 2023, and has lifted the official cash rate by an unprecedented 75 basis points, to 4.25%.
The cash rate hike, announced on Wednesday, is the largest in the central bank’s history, and comes as it attempts to rein in New Zealand’s 7.2% inflation rate.
National finance spokesperson Nicola Willis said in a statement that the outlook was grim for New Zealand’s economy.
“Ominously, the Reserve Bank is not only forecasting a year-long recession, but it believes inflation has not peaked, and will still be higher at the start of next year than it is now.”
The country also typically fixes mortgage rates for short terms of 1-3 years. About half of New Zealand’s mortgages are up for refinancing in the next year, and many of those borrowers may have last fixed their mortgages at the rock-bottom interest rates of 2019 – meaning a large chunk of mortgaged homeowners are now facing substantial rises in their mortgage repayments.

I think the problem we have here is Australia is a high wage economy and we arent. Its been like this for 40 years now, a lot of people move to Australia and right now with the world wide shortage of Health professionals wages in that sector are so much higher in Australia.
With respect to doctors and IT specialists there are plenty of opportunities, we have a real shortage in those sectors and a ton of jobs there but we cant compete with Australias higher wages.

Sorry anything quoting Nicola Willis should simply be ignored, she is an utter moron and sadly will be our next finance minister.
A couple of weeks ago she was giving a radio interview and was asked about her proposed tax cuts which are heavily in favour of the highest income earners. For example her proposed tax cuts mean those on minimum wage would be better off by $112/year, those on $70k would be better off by $900/year and the new PMs wage (when her leader wins) would be better off by $18k/year. Push that out over 10 years and you get minimum wage being better off by $1120, those on $70k better off by $9k and the future PM would be better off by $180k. When quizzed on how she could justify this she told the interviewer that it would help stop our best talent from leaving NZ for other countries. She was then asked where do most go and she replied Australia (which is true). The interviewer then pointed out Australia had a higher top tax rate and the problem wasnt taxes but wages at which point Willis was completely flummoxed and finished the interview.

Since that interview National have quietly pushed tax cuts to the back of their agenda but they will still happen.

Global right wingers on twitter seem delighted at her departure. Not entirely sure why, although the fact that she was pretty effective against COVID and the usual right wing misoginy would seem like leading contenders.

A real shame that she had to be put through all of the undeserved crap and then step down as a result. If it was not for her, I don't think anyone would have seen the PM of New Zealand as the real deal among top world leaders out there.

If Peterson is a psychologist, then he's a shame to the entire profession by having a go at someone enduring mental health problems.

I thank any name given to God on every day that the world has the likes of Jacinda Ardern, Tsai Ing-wen, Justin Trudeau, Sanna Marin, Joe Biden, and Katrín Jakobsdóttir to lead their respective countries out of the pandemic crisis. Those aforementioned leaders are the ones to praise and use as examples to follow. Be any of them rather than being any between Boris Johnson, Donald Trump, Jair Bolsonaro, Vladimir Putin, or Xi Jinping.

Essentially because she values kindness over corporate profits and wasn't afraid to say so. Then her navigating a huge terrorist attack, a volcanoe tragedy and COVID so well really pissed them off.

Oregon to ban Kangaroo leather - mainly Nike footy boots. Which is a bit odd as Kangaroo leather is mainly the result of population control which actually benefits kangaroos in the wild as it prevents over population (the dead ones may disagree of course). Leather and meat are a by-product of culling rather than the root cause. Without an economic incentive it will be farmers who are culling them and they won't care as much about how they die as they don't need to take head shots to maintain the quality of the meat and skin.

Police said the Trains subscribed to a broad Christian fundamentalist belief system known as premillennialism
Deputy Police Commissioner Tracy Linford said Nathaniel, Gareth, and Stacey Train acted as an autonomous cell and executed a planned "attack directed at police" at Wieambilla in December.

They shot Constable Rachel McCrow, 29, Constable Matthew Arnold, 26, and neighbour Alan Dare at their property in the Western Downs on December 12.

"We don't believe this attack was random or spontaneous," Deputy Police Commissioner Linford said.

"We do believe it was an attack directed at police.
What a waste of life

Labour have fallen just short of majority government with numerous Liberal seats just hanging on by far less than 1%. Let's hope Labor do a good job and Libs get wiped out next time around. Still a great result for Labor.

I actually wanted a minority government with the 3 Greens now having much more power to influence things.

Federally there was a by-election in Victoria in a safe Liberal seat and Labor won. The first time in more than 100 years that a government has won a seat from the opposition in more than 100 years. Voldemort (Dutton) would be gone if there were almost anyone else to challenge him for the leadership. Hopefully this means Lib/Nats will be in opposition long enough for their aging base to significantly reduce further and we consign them to the bin/history.

Very interesting to see Australia go conservative considering ageing population.
Aren't we moving more progressive, as the Liberal party are considered the more conservative of the two major parties? As the Labour party seem to be the ones winning in recent times.
