Sørloth? Atletico are looking to sell; he scores at a rate of every 82 minutes. He's 28, so in his prime. He's very physical, surprisingly fast, a very hard worker and quite versatile. The issue is the 50M EUR they are asking. I think he would be a great second striker for us - but not good enough to lead the line.
Straight swap with Antony.

I ve been impressed with Mateta. Compared to Hojlund his hold up play looks miles ahead.

Wonder who would have been top target out of Osimhen and Gyokeres if we had Champions League and wage demands were more reasonable

I don´t think we can go all in for someone like Osimhen or Gyokeres because realistically we need two strikers who can alternate.

Maybe you could sign say Delap and Patrick Schick for the cost of Osimhen.

Are we selling Hojlund in this scenario? Loaning him out?

Right now a stone wall offers better link-up play, and one of those inflatable skydancers offers better hold up play.

Might also suggest why our defenders struggle with strikers holding up the ball, they are used to playing against Hojlund in training so have it easy...

Surely, as a professional footballer, you can train on this, Hojlund just doesnt seem to improve at all.

But that still leaves us with 4 great options, with only Arsenal and maaaybe one of PSG, Barca or Liverpool in need of a new CF
Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle are all looking for a striker in this window, Arsenal might even sign 2 given the issues they have experienced due to not having a striker. Once you add in the clubs from other leagues looking for a striker then it is pretty clear that demand will comfortably outstrip supply.

Quick primer based on most credible reports and limiting clubs to one signing;

Osimhen - Off to Saudi, wants the cash
Gyokeres - Arsenal most likely
Ekiteke - Liverpool most closely linked so far
David - Considering offer from Napoli and has previously stated his preference not to move to the PL
Sesko - Was linked to Arsenal, now up in the air with their pivot to Gyokeres
Delap - Linked to us, Chelsea, Forest, Newcastle and quite a few others. Not sure what he wants.
Vlahovic - Currently linked to Atletico

Some other names floating around but none that are all that exciting and again, many clubs here and overseas are looking for a goalscorer. Juventus will certainly be in for someone and they are not alone. We are being sniffy about whether Delap for example is good enough and ignoring the reality that we could very easily end up not signing a striker at all this summer if they opt for other destinations.

Wouldn't mind it, tbf

I’ve never seen another striker jump back into defenders like Højlund does. He loses all focus on the ball with his intent set on wrestling the defenders. He uses his body wrong.

He’s regressed. He showed some promise, and he still had potential, but he needs to improve rapidly.

Yeah remember thinking he caused Arsenal problems in that first game at Emirates when he came on

This is the one from the PL that would be worth it for me

How does the Caf rate (yet another Victor) Boniface?

The man is built like a tank and compares favorably to other top strikers. He’s top tier aerially, does not get all his actions out of silver platter, and is only 24 with low mileage on his legs (plays behind Schick).

His name is not on anybody’s radar and appears to have a €50m price. What’s the catch? Wants Saudi money too?

From copilot -

Top Performers in Self-Created Chances:
  1. Viktor Gyökeres – 1.13 xG per 90, 3.53 shots per 90, and high dribbling success make him one of the best at generating his own chances.
  2. Patrick Schick – 0.92 xG per 90, 3.23 shots per 90, and strong finishing ability.
  3. Jonathan David – 0.56 xG per 90, 2.09 shots per 90, and excellent movement off the ball.
  4. Benjamin Šeško – 0.49 xG per 90, 1.94 shots per 90, and aerial dominance.
  5. Yoane Wissa – 0.53 xG per 90, 2.16 shots per 90, and good dribbling ability.
Outside top five - Liam Delap – 0.36 xG per 90, 1.50 shots per 90, still developing his ability to create chances.

Weird considering gyokeres isn't actually a very good dribbler but I guess it depends on what is being measured as a "dribble"

Plus I think delap is actually one of the better strikers in the league when it comes to generating shots for himself.

I'd take this with a pinch of salt as there's probably better ways to measure this sort of thing.

No European football of any kind next season to attract top quality players in the summer, right?

Considering the state of the team, and the lack of European football. Samu is probably one of the few realistic options. He’d probably be 50-60 mill, but is one of the top striker prospects in the world. 28 goal contributions for Porto and only 3 pens. A classic 6’4 striker with pace and loves smashing them in. He’d be taking a step up to join us, and given our limited options I think he’d be the best.

Evann Guessand from Nice also intrigues me. Given they’re INEOS owned and we’re no longer both in European competition. I think we could nab him up on the cheap, maybe 20 mill. 13 goals and 10 assists in Ligue 1, can play striker and right wing/wingback. He’s tall, fast, physical and versatile. Seems a no brainer given our assumed limited funds after the Final loss.

If we could nab both for under 80 mill I’d consider our striker situation somewhat sorted for the future, contingent upon Hojlund being loaned or sold.

We haven't got £50-£60m to spend on striker, sorry. I would advise you start looking way down the quality list in our current shambolic situation

We need a striker that will actually improve us not any old tom, dick or harry who is getable now that we don't have the carrot of CL football next season.

We need a new poll with max price for a striker at around £40mil. Plus rule out anyone who wants CL football. Would be a more realistic poll.

Delap may be the extent of our pull now, realistically. Even the likes of Mateta have European football and would be taking a step down.

Sounds like a realistic update/restart

Sell Garnacho and go for Osimhen with the delap funds + garnacho funds

Thing is, unless Gyokeres stays at Sporting then United might be the only other option he has at this rate.

It's being reported that Arsenal's top target is Sesko, if Delap goes to Chelsea, and you also think about Ekitike, David, and so on, then who else is signing the guy?

Regardless, I dread the thought that we end up with Liam Delap as our main guy.

Yeah makes you feel sick to your stomach

I shudder to think who we will get now with no CL football, no European football & losing out on the CL money, probably another duffer, Hojlund Mk 2 who'll come in & score about 5 goals all season.

Yeah we will have to shop at Aldi

Well we're definitely not getting Gyokeres now, and I imagine the likes of Sesko are out. Delap was reportedly only interested if we got CL and Chelsea want him so that's probably not likely either.

I suspect we get completely fleeced for a mid table striker like Mateta for £75m or something daft.

This is where we have to swallow our pride, switch our strategy, start scraping at the bottom of the barrel sort of speak, and be smart to identify and get the likes of Wissa, Eze, Ait-Nouri for relatively cheap before they break through and their prices skyrocket.

Question is whether we have that kind of scouting network in place. Not very optimistic on this one despite our inherent brand name advantage, but it's what we'll have to resort to for the most part or we'll be in the wilderness for the foreseeable future.
