Monga is a luxury signing for a team that already has a good squad in place. He looks a good prospect from the clips I've seen, albeit I've never watched a full game of his.

But he's only just about to turn 17 and he had 1 goal and 2 assists to his name in the Championship last season. So it seems a massive stretch to think that he'd be ready to play first team football for a team looking to finish in the Champions League spots again next season.

United need strengthening across multiple positions, so can't afford to place a 10 million pound bet on the future when at the moment they only have 1 new signing in place for next season.
 
As a West Ham fan, you’ll regret spending a big wedge on Summerville. Will just be a squad player for you. A good player but would say more a mid table signing. Surprised you are so interested. He’s had a purple patch the second half of the year and is a good finisher cutting in but is a bit of a one trick pony. Fernandes is the real deal on the other hand.

Yeah, if you actually think we should sign a LW, it should be because you want them to contribute to the first team. We've already got prospects at the club.

I don't even like Summerville and I would prefer we buy a LB, but I would take Summerville over Monga despite likely costing 4X the price.

As of 2025 Spurs had the lowest wage to turnover ration in the league (link). Under SCR your ceiling is determined by your squad wage bill, not losses, so Spurs have more headroom in both relative terms and absolute terms than anyone in the league. Which is why they're able to spend so much.

Hes the type of player I do wonder whether will look much better when the quality around him looked better. He certainly looked a better player once we had a semi competent forward in place. Its a little hard to judge anyone at West Ham on the total disaster that was the first half of the last season.

ith that being said, he does feel like more of a Newcastle/Aston Villa type singing to me.

That doesn't equate to spending feck all for years. They've been spending quite a bit. Just mostly on average players.
 
Very, very excited about the four goals and five assists this could add to our season next year
 
We'll find out what Man Utd are willing to pay and then quote Tottenham £20m more.

Spurs are well known to have a low wage bill, always did under Levy. Sorry if you go the wrong end of the stick, or didn't know about SCR or whatever, but it is the reason why they're able to spend so much now.
 
We don’t need another winger, but if we’re hellbent on acquiring one as a squad man, Summerville fits the bill.

That’s a different argument though. You claimed they’d spent feck all in recent years which is incorrect when it comes to net spend on transfer fees.

Their wage bill is 6th highest in the league. Low wage bill compared to their revenue maybe.

Also, never knew when people talk about spending they automatically refer to wage bills and SCR and not their transfer spend. And having SCR headroom somehow means they spent feck all previously. As you were.

I still don't understand why we did not push for a "double deal", like 110m or so for both, paying a bit more for Summerville so you don't need to pay back less for Fernandes. We blew this big time

It's not about me getting the wrong end of the stick. It's about me trying to correct what I thought was an incorrect statement. I don't think the original poster had wages and SCR in his mind when he was talking about Spurs' spending. If he was, well apologies for trying to fault you perfectly valid argument.

Yea and that's why I have no problem with the club trying to get that spending under control by not overpaying for new players. We are constantly one of the biggest spenders in the league with barely a title challenge to show for it. And it's not like we don't spend anymore. We still spent north of 70m each on Mbeumo and Sesko.

It's when the prices get silly I'm happy for the club to walk away like they did for Branthwaite, Baleba, Fernandes and Tonali.
 
Not thrilled about him, the type of player that looks busy and gets a pass for it, very few goals and assists. I don't mind him as a squad player for the extra games next season but anything more than £35m and it's a pass.

Yep, agreed. If our scouting is good enough then we should be able to walk away from some deals but still build a competitive and balanced squad.

There is a logical reason for this. We were not competing for honours, so the only way to tempt players to join was to give them massively excessive salaries.

Interesting, I've heard the opposite from other West Ham fans.
Summerville being class, Fernandes being good but unsure of how good he'd be in a better side.

Wonder how many players in that 780m you could classify as good buys? Would probably be sub 7 and 3 of them would be Lammens, Cunha and Mbeumo. ETH really did a number on us.

Yep, he's an interesting one. I've watched a lot of him live last season and I like him.

He's able to beat a man from a standing start, we don't really have anyone who can do that.

We have issues opening up teams that sit back, and he's the kind of player that can make things happen.
