Sverre Nypan | Villa leading the chase

In theory, I think Ugarte and Mainoo actually is a good pairing. The problem is not so much the player types, more that Mainoo has fallen on the cliff this season. If they both play to their best, it could work very well.

It's not a good pairing - they are too slow. Mainoo will never work in a 2 man midfield - unless the other is really mobile, and Ugarte isn't.

It's in no way a good pairing and that's why Mainoo has "fallen off a cliff". Mainoo's still very young and so am confident he can do it in time but at the moment neither are either progressive passers or carriers in midfield so when the ball gets there it's just going to go sideways or backwards. The partnership works to some extent when you're playing a conservative game against better teams but its killing us against teams where we are supposed to be the dominant force as the midfield has no go forward ball or tempo setting, particularly when combined with two defensive oriented wingbacks. Mainoo is pure class in tight small spaces but he needs to develop more strings to his bow and particularly expand his passing range which I think he has in him.

No, I don't think that's the reason why he's not been able to receive and pass the ball the way he used to, or to succeed with a dribble. It doesn't really matter where on the pitch he is, in the pivot or as a nr. 10. We haven't seen much of his pure class in tight spaces, as you say, and that's not a question about position.

Personally think its how he's been used. If you look at his stats on fbref, most of his metrics have actually improved bar the goalscoring ones. He's 19 and so its perfectly normal for his develoment not to be totally linear but I think he's not the swiss army knife midfielder you need to be in a midfield two and he's been struggling at 10 bar in the first half of the rangers game so he's just not thriving.

If this kid is smart he'll take a step up to a more competitive league for a few years before even thinking about joining an English Premier League club.

He could do with a move to the Netherlands or Portugal until he's about 20/21 to build up some decent experience. If he excels at that level, that's when we should reconsider our options.

Ugarte is quite fast and mobile for a midfielder. Although there have been a few times he's looked slow, but I think that might be due to him struggling to play every game at the tempo that he plays at.

When we are able to loan players to Nice (after this summer I believe), this option should become a good option for us. Ligue 1 is a solid league and with Nice, players will also get European comp exposure too.

This summer that won’t be an option though, so if he wants to play for his boyhood club it may have to be now unless he is able to negotiate a lowish release clause with us at his next club. Unlikely but not impossible to happen. Or he could back himself and play more of an understudy role for a couple of years behind Fernandes and be his natural successor.

It would be nice if Nice signed him and then sold him on to us in a few years, if and its a very big if he really excels in the French league.

There are loads of kids that claim that we are their boyhood club, it's completely irrelevant to them signing for us though! Unless he's a generational talent (He isn't!) then he's not going to be anywhere near ready for this level of scrutiny any time soon. It's the last thing we need in a squad that already has lot's of young players that are struggling.

Transfer talk only
No transfer talk I see.

Take general talk about the player to the football forum please, so performance talk, what type of player he is etc

This thread should only be transfer talk

Only reason I can think that we’re not all over this is that we’re pretty content with the crop of young players coming through in that position (eg Thwaites, Ibragimov). Otherwise it feels strange that we’re not in for him.

Wonder if we start seeing shorter contracts for deals like this. With transfer fees reaching astronomical amounts and PSR having teams buckling down, I have to believe players will at this stage of their career would maybe look for a 3 year deal instead of 5+ in order to keep their options open.

I think it's more likely that we're just going to sign someone else.

This lad will exceed Odegaard. Which ever prem team gets him has a world on their hands

Shame we're not in for him, guess we're allergic to CMs.

Such a weird one as he's a United fan and performed very well against us in pre season last summer.

The main problem is you bring a Scandinavian over here to play for you and before long they start to miss training to go and loot churches and massacre the clergymen. Eriksen is always so bloody slow and lethargic in matches because he’s been up the night before, razing villages to the ground.

My guess is that we do have tight finances, and that money spent will be directed towards players that will actually go straight into the first team (either starting or backups). IMO Nypan isn't ready for the PL yet, and I would guess that Villa would have him settling in before loaning him out in January (and yes I'm Norwegian and have seen him a fair bit). Interesting prospect for the future nonetheless.

Good one

Great post. Never forget Lindisfarne.

Named, of course, after a distant forefather of Lindelof, who tried to attack the island by constantly backing off it and letting it bitch him aerially.

Really thought Arsenal had him in the bag, especially with us losing at least 2 midfielders, there would have been some minutes for him.
Villa's midfield seems tougher to break through.

That's LEGAL! Some would say, so go for it, mate!

On a more serious note - not sure we need another 18 year old in the squad. He may or may not become great, but not sure we have time or quality to develop him. Rather develops brilliantly somewhere else and we get him on a cheap three or four years from now.

That sounds a bit far-fetched. Ødegaard at 16 was holding his own in midfield against Croatia for Norway’s senior NT, with the likes of Modric and Rakitic. You follow him super closely and see something that others have missed? Because I’m pretty sure Norwegian media would be hyping him a lot more if he was looking like THAT much of a talent. He’s more than promising but better than Ødegaard is strong.

These are both very reasonable posts. I think we need a few more leaders in the spine. Are we going to be able to give him enough games to get to top PL standard over the next few years? As of now no, we've far too much ground to make up. He's also not a bellingham. He could become really good but he's a few years off yet. I think Caciedo looked more promising and physically made for the PL.

I don't think he's better than Odegaard at the same age either. Odegaard only really got going just before he moved to Arsenal and he was in his 20s. It's the hardest postion now, even really small PL clubs have really aggressive midfielders who can play all over you and punish you if they get the physical edge. I'm sure there are quite a few ready made players out there for this summer who can step in and improve us a lot next season. Mainoo is our young project player until he properly steps up and claims a regular spot.
