Posted this yesterday and it was deleted. Now it's official that van der Gaag is on board

and it appears also McClaren

And hints that he'll work with some of the staff already here.

Current staff:

  • Ewan Sharp arrived from Lokomotiv, a coach/analyst (also referred to as a match analyst), appointed under Rangnick.
  • Sascha Lense was also brought in by Rangnick, a sports psychologist.
  • Chris Armas, the American coach who has worked for the Red Bull teams, appointed under Rangnick.
  • Eric Ramsey was brought in earlier as a set piece coach, appointed under Ole in 2021.
  • Richard Hartis is the current senior GK coach, appointed under Ole in 2019.
  • Craig Mawson, GK coach, appointed under Ole in 2019.
  • Mike Phelan arrived with Ole (contracted until 2024).
  • Richard Hawkins, fitness coach, been here since 2008.
  • Michael Clegg, fitness coach, appointed under Ole in 2019.

Surely ten Hag will want to have more room to manoeuvre - would have thought it very unlikely that a head coach with a completely different style (and much higher intensity) than anything we've seen before, would require more specialised people to implement his vision here. Will be interesting to see who is kept on and who will arrive.

The reports seem to be more along the lines of, see if anyone that is here is worth working with before we fire the lot of them, which I think is sensible, and then anyone that does go and leaves a gap they will then talk about filling those gaps.

For example, I don't really see the need to get rid of Sascha Lense. However reports from today suggest Armas and most likely Phelan will be leaving so they will most likely be gone.

Yeah, agree on Sascha Lense, also a question of if he wants to stay on as he's here through Rangnick. I would definitely wonder about the fitness coaches and, to be fair, the goal keeping coaches too.

It seems the club wants to have him evaluate the current staff though

I just hope there is no stinginess here, we have to start on the right track, which means give him the conditions he requires to succeed, not just in terms of specialisation, but also character, and people he trusts. Van der Gaag is said to specialise mostly on organising the defense, and he speaks multiple languages which is a huge bonus. He'll have the work cut out for him, no doubt.

We need a change in fitness coach, can't believe how unfit our players are in comparison to basically almost every team.

Well I guess the point is, we don't need to rush the background staff as they make no difference to our plans etc because we have the main man in. Meaning when he starts he has time to evaluate the staff then make decisions about which ones he wants to keep and which ones he wants to replace

And he’s still in a job…. Anyone that ole brought in with him should of gone with him. Especially since there not doing there job properly, we have the un fittest team in the league… doesn’t help managers that do actually want to play a pressing game.

Sure. I'd expect Rangnick to already loop him in. There are also quite a few who look sorely out of place, like Phelan and Armas. I just think it's thread worthy to keep this open to discussion, speculation, and updates as and when they happen. Personally hoping for a rejuvenated coaching setup that is aligned on his vision and will prepare in unison for the summer.

True. Really look like the most unfit team in the league.

Amazingly his father, who had no professional qualifications had this role at Utd for 11 years, you'd think he would have learned a thing or two from him over the years.

Yeah stinks that appointment, former youth player who just had happened to have a dad that Phelan and Ole knew in that role.

Perhaps he was the best available but that would be very convenient and unlikely.

Agree especially with the bolded part, the main thing is that ETH to have the freedom to bring anyone he wants and keep or let go of anyone he wants

Ajax always look fit when I’ve seen them in Champion’s League. They have a Brazilian coach, Schoenmaker, who was at Derby, Palace and Newcastle (but was very young back then). I can’t imagine Ten Hag will want anything to do with Phelan or Clegg.

This is more to with the current players doing what they want on the pitch, having too big a say on how they want to perform. They’re just not listening. ETH has a massive job on his hands unless we get rid of Pogba and co

One of the biggest mystery. His extension was triggered earlier this season when pressure was already brewing on Ole's future.

Woodward chasing his losses when he extended Ole's deal under absolutely zero pressure (much like it was reported we were looking to bump Maguire's wages a few months ago, again, under no pressure).

So Armas and Sharp out. Surely Phelan as well. Will be interesting to see who will be tasked with fitness and conditioning.

Actually made a number of appearances for the first team in the league. Looked a promising enough player at one point. Does look a jobs for the boys appointment though

Surely Ten Hag will want new fitness and set pieces coaches at least.

I hope we bin Phelan and Ole's appointments, especially the fitness and set piece frauds.

I'd be dissapointed if we're letting go of the diamond dogs.

I don't know the name of bayern's fitness coach but whoever he or they are, they sure are doing one hell of a job, wish we could snatch em.
Pintu does a great job for Madrid too so I really wish we could bring in guys at their caliber.

I am certain that Erik will want a full investigation of why Varane has picked up so many niggly injuries this season
RR has been going on about it so I do think it will be a key element for the new coach.

I don't think we can underestimate the role RR will have in giving ETH a heads up on major issues at the club

For coaches you dont really need brilliant coach. Just one that knows how to implement instructions. A good sargeant. As long as the general knows his beef he could instruct accordingly.

Yeah maybe coaches can be improved. But I doubt it's the fitness coaches fault that the likes of Martial, Shaw and co don't have excellent levels of energy and physicality.

Get the club to draft up new contracts whereby the amount of KM you complete in a match is directly tied to your weekly wages.

You'll have these clowns start running around in the dressing room before and after the game.

Problem solved.

So you're saying that the CEO and an accountant would go on micromanaging even at coaching level? That's strange considering that he had promoted a DOF to do just that.

I read an interview somewhere where McLaren said he was only interested in a national job and the job he wants is not available at this time

Every player at United is on some kind of performance bonus, be it assists, goals, clean sheets, wins, already....

Different sources have said different people will leave, the ones I've read have said that Ewan Sharp, Chris Armas and Phelan will all leave, that was only yesterday and I fully expect more will follow. In fact, reading that list I'd be surprised if any are left.
