A-

Rewind back to where this squad was last season, add the Ronaldo problem and the fixture congestion, it impossible to expect more from this season than what's been delivered.

Only concerns are the inability to impose ourselves away from home against good opposition. Also, overpaying for what Antony is right now. I expect the former to improve with further investment and a good preseason.

An A would be fair imo. I don''t think anyone expected him to walk in and win the league in year one, so improvements in every area despite significant headwinds (Ronaldo etc) could easily be viewed as an A. The only reason I gave him an A- were the obvious Brighton/Brentford/City/ and Liverpool defeats, in which we looked utterly tumescent, as well as our inability to score goals during a stretch towards the end. Other than that, he's been fantastic.
I understand that, for some folks those drubbings will deduct a grade, so I can understand going down to a B.

I expected those drubbings though, trying to turn a deep sitting counter attacking team that is terrified of possession into a pressing team that builds from the back was never going to happen without a few heavy beatings.

Still though, I think we're on the right track for sure, with an actual finisher and some depth in midfield and at the back, and next season could be really fun.

A. It's about the big picture - 3rd place, 75 points, one trophy, one runner up (and how these achievements compare with last season) - more than individual games or players. My only specific regret is not winning yesterday.

Signings B+
We didn't buy a centre forward.
I wasn't sure about spending so much of our budget on a CB, but it was an excellent choice.
Similarly, I thought the price for Casemiro was too high. It wasn't.
Eriksen was a fantastic short term signing for free.
Malacia I like the look of, should improve over the next couple of years.
I think I like Antony more than most on here. He's had a tough first year. Being expected to play in every big game at quite a young age, it's been a mixed bag for sure. But his fight and desire will give him a great chance to keep improving.

Sabitzer was a shrewd loan signing.
Weghorst wasn't.

Discipline A
We've all heard the stories of how he's tightened the rules and seemingly applied them fairly and firmly. The fact that the group appears to have readily gone along with this says alot for the character of the manager.

Tactics B+
No manager gets it right all the time. We've had a few bad tactical games. We've also had quite a number of resounding tactical successes. Key injuries and poor options have posed difficult problems to solve.

Style of play C
There have been brief periods that hinted at a promising final destination. Again, injuries and other issues appeared to hinder progress at times. By the end, it felt like much of the progress had been abandoned in order to secure much needed wins.

Team selection C+
This might have gone up a whole grade had he not selected Sancho for the final. That might sound harsh, it's not personal though. Sancho has just started, over the last few weeks, to show glimpses of what he can do. I've been happy with that recent form, and pleased that he wasn't abandoned. There's a player in there somewhere and even if our only intention is to build him up again to recoup some of the money through a sale, ETH has been doing the right thing. But selecting him to start the cup final was either blind faith, or a misreading of the players attributes. He was always going to be a passenger in that type of game. We couldn't afford to carry him. Our options were limited of course, but we had a couple of specialist players who, if used correctly, could have posed problems to city.
This has been a theme this season. Quite often getting the balance between offensive and defensive players wrong. Particularly in our away games. Over-using some players and not recognising when certain players aren't suited to a game.
Overall not bad though. Strong enough to drop anybody. Would like to have seen more minutes for a few youngsters.

Squad management B
There's no need for me to list the players who could quite easily have been thrown on the scrap heap by ETH. He's given most a fair chance. Those who have been sidelined can't really have a complaint and he's largely managed to maintain some value to these players. Whereas some managers discard them like dirt, Ten Hag has mostly kept the fringe players ready and willing to perform. This should be a given in a professional setting, but unfortunately it's not these days.
Ideally we would have seen much more rotation. Maybe we couldn't have afforded it, maybe it would have helped toward the end of the season. I hope we get a better squad for him to use next season and that he makes changes more proactively as a result.

Game management/Substitutions C
Lots of mistakes here. Too many really. It's his first season in the league, but he really hasn't got to grips with away games at all well. Even against the lower teams, where our results have been okay, the performances have been really patchy. Too often we've invited pressure with the wrong changes. We don't seem able to take the sting out of games when we need to. We've had some comebacks, but also conceded a lot of late goals. Much room for improvement here.

Public persona A+
I've long believed that a foreign accent is an advantage for PL managers. They are normally afforded leeway in their choice of words and are rarely pressed for the true meaning of what's been said. This, often deliberate, ambiguity can be a really useful tool for a manager when facing awkward questions. Ole wasn't afforded this benefit of the doubt. His English is too good and he'd been here too long. Sir Alex qualified due to the difficulty of his accent and demeanor. Jose used to, but lost it. (I very much doubt LVG cared who he was talking to, ever )
Erik Ten Hag, apparently unusually for a Dutchman, came with a reputation of only having broken/average English. I can't help but wonder if this was a deliberate ploy to make life easier for him in dealing with the press.
Whatever his strategy, he's managed to cultivate a gruff, serious and professional face for the cameras. His confidence is obvious for all to see and he's more than capable of diffusing difficult interview situations.
He also has a good balance on the sidelines, getting involved at the right times, without embarassing himself like some managers. Has a good angry face.

Results A
It can't be a A+ because of a few key results. A couple of which could easily see a manager sacked at such a big club. But overall he's pulled out some massive results and produced a huge number of wins, considering our situation. Sometimes it's felt like he's been lucky. Other times everything has been going against him. But the wins have pretty much kept on coming. Really impressive.

If A would have been fair, what would have been if he won the league and the FA cup and the Europa? I guess an A.

Which makes giving him an A this season pretty ridiculous.

Better than FA cup win and Europa League win?...
Mourinho won the League Cup.

I rate 3rd place and losing to the EL winners in the quarters above 6th place and winning the EL, yes. But that is really just the start of it. The football and transfers have been better too.

Those were never the expectation. What was expected was improvement, and we did improve significantly as well as hit most of the other targets.

A-

The only things preventing an A is the worrying lack of goals and the poor away league form.

Given the mess he picked up last summer, it’s a magnificent first season to build on for the future.

Overall rating 7/10
Overall he’s done a good job but it has been a bit over rated at the same time because of what went before. He obviously has standards and I’m pleased he quickly identified and put the shite on the bench. I expected a lot more though from our style of play based on the arguments put forward on here during the Poch/ETH debates…

Style of play 3/10
Been disappointed with this area mostly. We’re still Moments FC except instead of rubbish footballers like Mctominay and Maguire we have very good footballers like Casemiro and Martinez so we’re able to get the win against weaker sides a lot more often than not . We don’t keep the ball well enough. We aren’t composed, our press is still dysfunctional, our defensive line is too deep and our attack is subpar.

Attack 5/10
He’s got Rashford firing again and Garnacho is a good prospect but our attack is generally blunt without them. We have to rely on defensive players to develop our attacks (and Bruno obv) because anyone in our attack bar Rashford and Garnacho is really really rubbish. Players are still just doing whatever they want in attack. Shooting from distance repeatedly, running at players aimlessly, daft flicks or just generally being afraid of their own shadow (Jadon Sancho).

Defence 7/10
Our defensive line is probably a bit deep but we’re much better defensively if you ignore the mental capitulations away from home against good teams. I think our defenders are good enough to play higher up the pitch and our defence have all got better as the season progressed except David de Gea who turned into a full blown muppet.

Signings 5/10
Mixed bag. Casemiro and Martinez have been excellent. Eriksen decent. Unfortunately Antony and Malacia look like two players we’ll have to replace in a year or two because they aren’t good enough and wouldn’t stand out in the Dutch League. Weghorst isn’t even worth mentioning.

Results 7/10
Probably the strongest area. Didn’t expect 3rd and a 17 point swing is impressive (although pretending Spurs and Chelsea finishing in 8th and 12th wasn’t absurd and thus helpful to us is bizarre) . Gave a good go in all the cups and apart from the shambles in Seville we were pretty consistent in the cups. Home form has been exceptional too. But we’re way way short in the tough games away from home, like miles off it.

Signings 7.5/10: He was never going to have the funds and/or time to revolutionize the squad in one summer, so I mostly like what he did bring in. All signings have been to some degree successful and none have so far flopped. Antony has the biggest question mark but it is not easy for an attacker to hit the ground running in the Premier League. The next season will be crucial for him and we should know by Christmas how pivotal (or not) he will be in the team. Loan signings I think are forgivable because ETH was stitched up in January when it was even looking like United could be in an unlikely title race.

Squad Management 9/10: Tempted for a 10 because I really like how he managed the squad. Almost everyone was given a fair chance and some took it (Shaw, Lindleof, AWB, Dalot, Rashford) and others did not (McTominay, Sancho, Maguire, etc.). We complained about previous managers picking Maguire because he was captain. Ten Hag has made a difficult situation look easy by fazing Maguire out, while I think he dealt with Ronaldo perfectly, too. He has also given players who are probably not good enough plenty of time to improve or highlight their inability. I am thinking Sancho, Martial, and De Gea (I think he is a true United legend, but is no longer good enough). ETH has a squad that was not good enough last season and some players have let him down as they have other managers. Ten Hag's ability to work around those poor players, still use them, and still build a decent season is commendable.

Public Persona 9/10: Not important for some but we need to think back to some of the things Moyes, Mourinho, Ole, and Ragnick said. ETH is all business, and mostly only discusses football in simple answers without getting involved in the drama. I love that he gives the media virtually nothing. I also like that he is rock steady in his belief that winning is the most important, the next game is the most important, and he is not making any excuses.

Quality of football/tactics 6.5/10: This is an area where the most improvement can be made. ETH played good football at Ajax and when it has come together it has also been good at United. However, it is clear he has been held back by the team. It is worth remembering the current team is not his yet. Still, some of the losses were really poor and he could have been more reactive. I actually do not count the Liverpool game in this because that really was a freak game. Although, I think ETH could have seen the signs sooner and reacted to stop what happened.

Achievements 8/10: While the mid-season success has made some people revise what they really expected from this season, most fans were sure top 4 and nothing else would be a success. So, to get the top 4 relatively easily, win a cup, and reach the FA Cup final, is just an excellent first season. Most other top managers haven't managed similar success and it is always worth remembering where United were coming from.

Overall grade A-: Almost all aspects are moving in the right direction, and there is something to build on in all areas. There should be optimism heading into the new season, especially if the club gets the transfer window right.

You're...going to love me
I'd go B+.

Transfer window ended up being a pretty good one, despite leaving it late. I'm putting most of that down to board level rather than Ten Hag dilly dallying over targets. Martinez and Casemiro have been great signings, Malacia was only £12m and started off pretty good, Eriksen has been invaluable and on a free is the kind of profile for squad players we should be going for rather than expensive, overpaid signings that then fail to deliver so just get relegated to the bench because we can't shift them. Anthony is the one question mark. Not the best season and at the price would have expected more. Still time to improve and there are signs, could also be another failed big signing. Still it's been a long while since we've had a summer window this good, which is partly a reflection on the absolute shambles we've been but also a bit of hope things are finally getting better.

He managed the Ronaldo situation perfectly and dealt with Maguire in way that didn't completely alienate him despite him essentially being 4th choice while being captain and in his prime years. This and not having a premier league quality striker for a lot of the season and he still managed 3rd, a trophy and another final.

The bad stuff is the tendency to completely collapse in some games. When it goes wrong it really goes wrong and probably happened one too many times that its a concern it might be thing where every so often we just completely shit the bed. Other than that it's our failure to convert our dominate periods and extend our leads but again that might just be fixed by signing a competent striker rather than down to his tactics. Our goals conceded was pretty good despite a 7-0 hammering, but we need to find an extra 15-20 goals if we are to continue to close the gap.

A or A-

All things considered, a good season and he overachieved despite all the challenges and spanners thrown his way. Not only did he get CL, he finished 3rd. He also won his first trophy in his first year and did all this while playing some decent football. He managed the lack of squad depth in the face of the fixture congestion well. Managed the Ronaldo situation well. Sorted out our centerback position, albeit temporarily. Survived the numerous hatchet jobs on our players, with long term injuries or ridiculous suspensions on many first team players. And he seems like a man who knows what he wants. That will help a lot in the transfer window.

Well done and long may our progress under him continue.
