THE AMERICAS DRAFT

All players who a) were born in or b) have represented a nation that is a current CONMEBOL or CONCACAF member are eligible, with the exception of those listed as BLOCKED below. If a player has represented multiple current CONMEBOL or CONCACAF members, his country of birth will determine which pool (see below) he belongs to. Players not born in any nation that is currently a CONMEBOL or CONCACAF member are eligible as long as they have represented a current CONMEBOL or CONCACAF member, and if such a player has represented multiple current CONMEBOL or CONCACAF members, the national team he has the most caps for will determine which pool (see below) he belongs to.

NOTE: Players who have represented non-CONMEBOL/CONCACAF national teams are eligible as long as they qualify for criteria a) and b) above. In other words, a player who represented both Mexico and Sweden - is eligible.

SEE ALSO: ADDITIONAL NOTES

This is a SNAKE draft.
When a manager's turn comes up, he has 8 hours to make a pick. Should any manager fail to do so, the next manager in line is free to pick. Waiting for managers who fail to pick on time is not encouraged. Such managers will simply pick at their earliest convenience, and there is no punishment involved beyond losing one's turn.

All managers will draft 14 players.

All starting XIs (throughout the entire draft) must include a minimum of 4 outfield players from what is defined as Pool 2 below.

Pool 1: Argentina, Brazil.

Pool 2: CONMEBOL (minus Pool 1) and CONCACAF.

NOTE ON PEAK: Standard career peak is what voters will be asked to consider (regardless of where the player spent most of his career).

Reinforcements:

The reinforcement pool consists of all losing teams but is limited to those players who were drafted in rounds 3-14. Two players may be picked before the q-f and s-f stages, and one player before the final. Reinforcement format: Snake (reversed order from last round).

Match thread rules and guidelines:

Managers are encouraged to keep their write-ups brief and to the point. Player profiles should preferably be posted in the main thread and linked to. Specific rules for the OP/write-up: Do not include gifs, videos or quotes. General: All gifs posted (subsequent to the OP) must be spoilered. Try to keep gifs, videos and quotes as relevant as possible (highlight videos, generic praise and similarly themed material should only be posted if the player in question warrants it especially). The above should be respected by neutrals as well as managers. Many browse these threads on their phones, and loading the pages can sometimes be an issue.

Tactical changes: Substitutions are not allowed. You may tweak your team tactically, re-assigning player roles, etc., but you may not introduce new players to the XI. You are allowed to post an updated formation illustration to go along with the changes. The above will be threadmarked, should you request it, but no changes will be made to your OP/write-up. No changes of any kind are permitted until halftime (i.e. until a minimum of 12 hrs have passed).

NOTE: The manager can request that minor changes (subject to interpretation) be made to the OP at any time.

BLOCKED PLAYERS: A. Di Stefano, E. Figueroa, D. Maradona, L. Messi, Pelé.

I'm generally not a fan of combining concepts. Every draft should have a clear theme. Each of the ones suggested so far has merit as a draft in its own right.

Put me down for either the Reserve Reserve or the South American.

NOTE ON BLOCKS: The reason for blocking the players in question is simple. The attacking quartet stand out to such a degree that drafting them (a matter of pure luck, of course) will constitute too big an advantage, not least since we have decided to try out EAP's new reinforcement idea (which means, in practice, that you cannot realistically make up for said advantage through upgrading). Figueroa joins the attacking quartet for a similar reason: He stands out (in terms of how highly he is rated) similarly, as a player who may likely constitute a disproportionate edge for the manager lucky enough to draft him.

NOTE ON ELIGIBILITY: UPDATED To keep things simple, the following applies: The minimum requirement for a player who does not have caps for any CONCACAF/CONMEBOL member, is that said player must have played at senior level for a club in the Americas. Beware that the above is a minumum requirement and that the original note (below) still applies:

All picks must be made in accordance with the spirit of the draft. Players should be plausible representatives - in football terms - of the region they were born in. If they are not, they will be rejected, regardless of being formally eligible as per the rules (see above). Make sure that you clear a potentially controversial player with the draft master before picking him.

NOTE ON INELIGIBLE PICKS: In the (should be unlikely enough) event that someone picks an ineligible player, and this is not discovered straight away, the responsible manager loses his pick for the round in question but may pick a final player to complete his squad after the regular drafting has finished (i.e. after round 14 has been completed). The reason for this measure (again, it is unlikely that it will actually happen), is that allowing the manager to simply replace the ineligible pick at his earliest convenience could potentially have negative consequences for other managers (and the latter should obviously not suffer from the first manager's mistake).

I don't know enough about the south American league's to get involved in this but I'll be an AM for someone if they need help.

Would like to play this one but not sure about how much time I'll have in the coming weeks, thus can only be a scout/co-manager. If anyone's interested, drop me a PM.

Go easy on me, guys!
Never say that...they can smell fear...

Seriously, though - nice to see new faces in these things: And it should be a pretty straight-forward affair, no nasty twists and turns, just a question of picking players and composing a team.

@Chesterlestreet what do you reckon of easing the GK must be from Pool 1 rule?

You can still put it as a requirement to have 4 outfield players from Pool 2 from the duration of the draft, but relax it a bit on having a keeper from other countries as well. As it stands we have 1 outstanding keeper, 1 that is a level below and others become pretty underwhelming from the 5th, 6th pick onwards.

Besides a lot of good keepers from other countries (and some pretty eccentric ones) wouldn't get picked, which is a shame.

Well, it was touched on in the Next Idea thread – but never really discussed.

The restriction only has one real purpose, viz. to limit the number of outfield Pool 1 players. The downside is obvious – we lose out on several classic keepers who clearly deserve to be featured more than (at worst) random Brazilians.

I'll leave it open for the time being – but unless someone comes up with a very good counter argument to what you propose, I'm inclined to agree: No GK restriction but a minimum of four outfield players from Pool 2 must be on the pitch at all times.

Yeah it's a bit of a win win situation. The 4 outfield players restriction still stays so it won't intervene to that and we will still have top 4-5 keepers that if someone wants to prioritize that position could do so.

Besides that would open and improve the general level of goalkeepers and could possibly generate some discussions regarding keepers, having in mind most of the top ones are eccentric ones, sweeper keepers and so forth.

Thanks for the tag mate but doubt I will play this one. Probably in one of the coming ones though, the drafts have been interesting lately.

Don't worry @MounchesterUtd this is the friendliest place on the caf, the worst thing that could possibly happen to you in this draft is a couple of people telling you zanetti can't play defensive mid
