The bad (typically gun related) things happening in America

Is Stockton a rough part of California?

Google search has it anywhere in the top 3 of the most violent crimes committed city in the state per capita and amongst the highest in the country. I believe it is a high gang activity city as well. I spent a few months at Travis AFB (Vacaville) in the summer 2023 and recall coworkers saying stay away from the likes of Oakland, Stockton, Modesto, and parts of San Francisco as well. Was told if you park in these areas just leave your windows down because the chances of breaking in is higher than normal; was told do not have anything of note in the car as the thief/thieves will likely scan and move on, or worse steal the vehicle.

Thank you, sounds like a tough place to grow up.

Mass shooting at Brown University, upwards of 30 victims...

The Tweet is bollocks, hugely exaggerating the numbers involved. Although it doesn't change the fact there was another shooting, the actual number of victims was 11. 2 dead and 9 injured and the shooter has been captured and is in police custody.

Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle, were found murdered in their Brentwood home. Not sure if they've made an arrest but their son, Nick, is a prime suspect according to the New York Post rag.

Heard today the suspect is still on the loose. The person they picked up has been released.

Update, seems like they found him in New Hampshire. Looks like he killed the MIT professor in Boston as well.

The silence from the administration considering his background is very telling. Imagine if he was from Togo or Iran, instead of Portugal...

There's a far right, completely crazed gun loving Trump supporter from Portugal who lives in the USA on this site.....

Seriously though, it's amazing how little coverage this has got since the nationality of the shooter was discovered. You can guarantee it would have been wall to wall coverage had the guy been a Muslim or a Democrat.

Just like the Trump shooting in Pennsylvania, the Charlie Kirk shooting etc... Fox News is frothing at the mouth for a trans or Muslim shooter.

Oh for sure. I'm also sure they have tried to claim a mass shooter was trans on a number of occasions when they actually weren't. No different to the scramble to claim the hero of Bondi Beach isn't Muslim. The lengths they go to to further their agenda truly knows no bounds.

Six people, including a 7-year-old girl, were killed in rural Mississippi on Friday night in what authorities described as a shooting spree across three different locations by a lone gunman.

The suspect, Daricka Moore, 24, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, which will be upgraded to capital murder with additional murder charges, Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said at a Saturday news conference.

Not gun related for once but strange nonetheless..

Airport in Texas closes for 10 days, over 'special security reasons'

El Paso Airport in Texas has been ordered to halt all flights for the next 10 days.

Local newspapers in El Paso and the New York Times cited "special security reasons".

The restrictions - imposed by the US Federal Aviation Administration - for all flights to and from El Paso airport are in place until 20 February, the airport said.

El Paso Matters quoted what it said was the order: "The federal aviation administration (faa) classifies the airspace defined in this notam as 'ntl defense airspace'. Pilots who do not adhere to the following proc may be intercepted, detained and interviewed by law enforcement/security personnel."

"The united states government may use deadly force against the airborne acft, if it is determined that the acft poses an imminent security threat," the notice added.

In 2024, more than four million passengers used the airport.

Closed with 3 hours notice and apparently nobody had a clue about it, even Army

Hi y’all. El Paso City Councilmember here but also fellow avgeek. Not a usual sub for me, but here we are. We’re all trying to work out why this crazy NOTAM was issued. What I know so far (as of midnight zero six local Wednesday):

• It isn’t a typo or an error. FAA issued this NOTAM intentionally as written.

• Nobody local got advance notice. And I mean nobody — neither civilian nor military leadership.

• Military does not have carte blanche exemption. Army is fretting about their flights tomorrow just as much as everyone else.

• Albuquerque Center did not get advance notice.

A British woman who was shot dead by her father while visiting his home in Texas had argued with him about US President Donald Trump earlier that day, an inquest has heard.

Lucy Harrison, from Warrington in Cheshire, was shot in the chest on 10 January 2025 in Prosper, near Dallas.

Police in the town investigated the 23-year-old's death as possible manslaughter but no criminal case was brought against Kris Harrison after a grand jury in Collin County declined to indict him.

An inquest into Lucy Harrison's death opened earlier at Cheshire Coroner's Court, where her boyfriend Sam Littler described the "big argument" about Trump, who was preparing to be inaugurated for his second term of office.

What's crazy is that this doesn't seem to be on any of the national news sites. They are too common to cover.

Thought there was a thread dedicated to US police actions, or maybe it's this one.

Attorney sues over deadly officer shooting of dog

  • A lawsuit claims a video released by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office showing deputies killing a dog was heavily redacted to tell what happened.
  • The attorney behind the lawsuit says he filed it on behalf of a concerned citizen who is seeking greater transparency in the case.

One person has died and two others were injured at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, in a shooting that the FBI is investigating as an act of terrorism.

Two people were shot and killed near the ongoing Players Championship before the gunman escaped onto the TPC Sawgrass course, leading to a manhunt across Northeast Florida.

The suspect has been arrested and identified as identified as Christian Barrios, according to St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick.

Barrios allegedly shot two people multiple times at about 10:30pm Friday in the parking lot of Walgreens in what Hardwick called a domestic violence situation. The store is located about a mile from the course and less than a 1,000 feet from other PGA Tour properties.

The victims succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the hospital, Hardwick told reporters. Their names have not yet been released.

Authorities say Barrios was captured at about 8am Saturday in Nassau County about an hour north of TPC Sawgrass.
