Strange episode. Not sure why they bothered introducing Starlight's dad midway through the final season, bit of a waste of time.
Yeah, this last episode had me browsing my phone to occupy my time until it was over.
Is that when Antman-like dude crawls inside dude's dick/urethra and then goes full-size and explodes the dude from his dick outwards? It's so hard to tell which shocking moment you're referring to.Season 4 EP 02 - 27 minutes in. What the feck did I just see??

That last episode actively annoyed me. Rubbish.
I liked this show better when it was a straight riff on Superman being evil. It’s been an extended spoof of MAGA shit for so long that it’s lost its bite.
The dialogue this season has been terrible, that episode was awful. Feels like the show is going out with a whimper.
The problem is the entire plot of the show is they must find a way to kill Homelander so every season there's a new mcguffin to look for whether that be soldier boy, the virus or in this season, v1. Then they have to pad around it with lad humour, trite relationship crap and gore which was fine for a while but got old pretty fast.
That entire last episode was filler really let's be honest.
I know they are taking the piss out of MAGA but the whole religious angle is shit. Can’t wait for the pastor to get his head blown up by homelander (probably)
Which is pointless, as actual Maga will be very close in terms of insanity to whatever fiction can come up with.
Correct. It's not spoofable because it's already transcended beyond what any level headed person would consider "normal".

This season’s dialogue has been really bad too. I am surprised how many (all?) of these episodes were written by women, when there’s dialogue like: “It’s locked up tighter than a Boy Scout’s asshole at Jamboree.” — Butcher.

I dont think its pointless. Its actually quite impressive how they've been able to spoof real life and then it comes true. In some ways they predicted it which reinforces that this is a show about how superheroes might actually be if they existed. However The Boys doesnt really take a side. They take shots at everyone a bit like South Park. For example The Deep and trying to save animals, thats a joke on the left and animal activists. So yeah they point to absurdity on both sides.
I cant imagine what the show would be like if Homelander didnt act like the president does. I think it would be really tone deaf and unrelatable if real life things werent in the show.
Something like Invincible works because its a cartoon and has so much to say about other planets and exploration of the universe. The Boys is only this planet and if it doesnt feel a bit like our planet I dont think anyone would like it. It would just be gore. The actual writing and story isnt that good outside of some of the topical jokes
I find it incredible that even in season 5, people dont/didnt realise the show was a satirical take on modern America from episode 1....
It's weird how Homelander has super-hearing, and can see through things, except at the times when it would actually be useful.

No idea why they bothered wasting half an episode on Starlight's dad and family. Unless it has some relevance to later episodes, they could have just cut it entirely and we would have lost nothing

He has to actively switch the X-Ray vision on (and would have no reason to if he didn't expect anyone else to be there, which he didn't), and Frenchie noted that he'd hear them if they weren't quiet.
Frenchie did note that, and then they all started belting the shite out of each other when the detector told them Homelander and Soldier Boy were directly above them. Homelander's super-hearing can hear someones heartbeat from 20 feet away, but he can't hear The Boys throw each other into the walls a floor or two beneath.
There's been bunch of other times through the whole season where I've thought Homelander should be able to hear something. It's haphazardly written into his character.
If you start nitpicking like that you'll only end up pissing yourself off. It's an OTT show about superheroes ffs. Let's not get all pendantic about minor inconsistencies.
However, if everyone who came close to that building was under the hateful influence of your man who was turned into wallpaper then maybe Homelander was too distracted to notice.
It was interesting fleshing out some of the characters but it should probably have been done sooner, not halfway through the final season. Enjoyed it though. Not sure I like Soldier Boy's reasoning behind supporting Homelander after all. Firecracker's actress is great.
I think it would be nitpicking if Frenchie didn't mention Homelander being able to hear them, only for them all to immediately forget a minute later, and it be inconsequential.
It seems dumb to mention it, only to smash each other into the walls anyway. They could (and probably should) have just not mentioned it.
The moan then would have been "why didn't they mention that he might hear them? They know his powers!" or something else. Endless cycle of nitpicking.

They couldn't control themselves because they were under the influence of the hatred. It was mentioned to illustrate that they were in control of their faculties and to raise the tension, surely?

That toilet scene was grim.
That was one crap episode.
Just caught up with the last 2 episodes. I wanted to think the Starlight's dad episode was filler too. But, halfway through I liked it. In one episode he was worth more to the show and the character development of Starlight than her mom was and she was in it from the start as a side character.
Yes they were riffing on ICE and neighbors and local law enforcement turning in friends and family even though they know its wrong. But, I thought it was effective here. It wasn't too preachy. And I took it from the perspective of the creators on a, Bezos owned streamer mind you, getting the message they want out there that you don't have to-do what you know was wrong. Even Starlight talking to her brother about how indoctrinated he is going to a Homelander charter school then coming right home and listening to Vaught all night. That again was pointed messaging that there are minor steps little guys can take for truth. Starlight's character was served here she was being bitchy and annoying to Hughie and her dad told her to get it together put her on the right path towards the end. She needed a push back out of the doldrums she was in this season. I think this served well enough while letting the creators get in some not so subversive points they wanted to make about larger society.
Then the latest episode The little narrative vignettes they were doing with specific characters it was interesting, I guess. Using those as a vehicle to get some development and exposition. Even the stuff with Terror I could see what they were going for it wasn't even about the dog obviously just a way to get some exposition in. We saw that old Butcher is still in there a little bit. He isn't "gone".
Deep and Black Noire was mixed. I think they lost some of the intrigue they were building with "what's going on with Noire" lately. I would have liked to see more done with that than just this. But, there is still hope I guess. Deep is just moving into less comedic relief and more asshole lordling jockeying for his spot as bootlicker. I think he will not be redeemed at this point he will just die a horrible death.
The whole Soldier Boy and Homelander in LA jaunt I mean those actors are all friends and we have seen them together in lots of other things. This was just them getting to play in this world, have the Supernatural brothers reunited here I thought it was fun and fine.

Last week was a disappointment, this week was back to its best
Watching the episode in the flashback and different character timelines reminded me of Weapons. While Weapons took 2 hours and 9 mins to tell a boring story from multiple perspectives and it felt like 2 days, this episode was 1 hour 8 mins including the credits and crammed so much entertaining stuff into one episode it was crazy. It was funny, it had some heart, it was sad and a horrible demise for a character in turmoil at the end. The only thing I would have done slightly differently is if Firecracker just before meeting with Homelander at the end thinks about contacting Starlight to ask for help and then decides not to. That would have been the fork in the road that might have saved her and she took the wrong option.
Maybe the episode was slightly Boys light with only Terror's perspective covering what they were doing. But they brought the entertainment.

Two thunderously shit episodes. What an absolute filler and borefest, all momentum is gone from what started as a good season.
Agreed this was a lot better and developed the characters a bit.
I think they did what you're suggesting with Firecracker in a way. She threw the Jesus figurine in the bin making her choice and it was the wrong choice with what happened in the next scene.
Why did they do a Simpsons style vignette episode halfway through the final season.
The interesting part about the Firecracker thing
He was going to let her live just be off the 7. She knew he was going nuts we saw it all episode but she decided to bury her own faith at the end and go with supporting the fake messiah. Another parallel to real life where these people of faith put aside the beliefs they say they live by to follow a false prophet knowingly.
