Television The Boys

I saw a post on Reddit telling people to cut directly from soldier boy powering up to de-power homelander during the season 3 finale to the moment he loses his powers here. Then you have a worthwhile show. The last couple of seasons were a waste and that finale fecking sucked man.

Considering how poor-average the last 2 seasons have been, they rectified it somewhat with a solid final episode.

I also feel vindicated in not wasting hours watching Gen V. My mates warned me that I had to watch it in order understand the situation in the last season of The Boys. I was stubborn in refusing to do homework to watch a separate series. Turns out they completely dismissed the Gen V characters in The Boys. Apparently one of them was meant to be just as powerful as Homelander? Yet she got about 30 seconds of screentime in this series

All a bit shite. Final showdown was so underwhelming, bumping around a room. Wow, amazing.....Will be filed under "Starts getting so shite that there is no point rewatching it" along with GoT.

Without giving spoilers, does it make sense to skip the season and go directly to the finale? I didn't enjoyed a single moment of the last season, and while I liked the third season, felt its ending was stupid and undid all of it. Effectively, I haven't enjoyed it since the first two seasons which IMO were excellent.

And reading the comments here, seems like this season was a dissapointment.
I've done exactly that. Gave up pretty much halfway through 3, but watched the finale today. Didn't feel like I missed a single thing, and it just felt like mostly a snoozefest and how it was going to end all along anyway.

To be honest, I wouldn't even bother watching this one. Watch a few clips instead, it's very by-the-numbers and not a patch on what it could and should have been.

Yeah, that's a good way to look at the series as a whole. Honestly if it wasn't for Anthony Starr's performance, this would be talked about far less.

Its worse than that. Not only did they big her up as being like Homelander in the way she was made and then trained to be someone who could fight him, she could bring people back to life. It made the final season seem like it might be interesting because although I didnt buy her being able to actually defeat him at least not 1 vs 1, she has brought people back to life so we could get a a character saved from death.

Nope. Just have Annie tell her not to get involved. Its now clear that one hand didnt know what the other was doing and there wasnt an actual plan for those characters to do anything in The Boys. Which makes it all the more silly to give her the powerups they did.

Essentially she controls blood like the headpopper also did, but also brought her sister back to life when she was recently passed. Also stopped the bleeding of someone bleeding out right at the start of the series. I'll tell you what though, Marie would have been a much better use of mins on the screen than the cat girl and dogknot - dogknot also being another person from Gen V.

Honestly though Gen V was better than the final seasons of the Boys, and better than Peacemaker season 2. It still makes sense to finish it now though

last 15 episodes were basically set-up episodes for that fight and yet it was still underwhelming. power levels seem to be very inconsistent as well. I was actually watching drone hit compilations for a large part of that final episode.

crap season overall and I'm glad it's finally over.

Probably. Just watch the recap that they themselves provide before the episode.

Well that ended.

Genuinely felt nothing watching that. They vastly overestimated how much the audience cares about some of these characters as well.

That's probably my main issue with that season story-wise (aside from there being no story at all). Surely a powerful supe that was hyped up for what, 2 seasons on a separate show, that can control blood is their deus ex machina to stop Homelander 2.0 by taking the V out of his bloodstream? Nah, we'll just speedrun the creation of a new superweapon that had no prior mention (of it being an option to make one, obviously Soldier Boy had it).

And if not, why were they even in that season for 2 identical scenes all they've done were sitting down listening that they shouldn't get involved... because surely Homelander wouldn't be able to reach them in Canada later.

P.S. Gen V are much better than the last 2 seasons of The Boys so, so don't feel too vindicated if you've chosen watching the latter over the former.

I was invested in the characters of The Boys from s1&2, so I felt like I had to reach the finish line. Whereas none of the characters in Gen V interested me, so I gave up on that after a few episodes.

Hopefully in a few years someone will use AI to change the ending of season 3 so that they all work together to kill homelander and it can be the real ending and season 4 and 5 can be erased from consciousness forever.

That was a good episode. If the rest of the season had been to that standard it would have been alright. The problem was that they knew how they wanted it to end but didn't know how the push it out for 8 episodes. It would have been better if they made the final season a 2 hour movie.

I will give it credit that Homelander's final moments was on his knees crying, begging to suck dick and eat shit just to stay alive. A suitable end for him.

Starr gets lots of credit and he deserves it but Karl Urban's OTT oi 'Omelandah cnut geezah stuff was entertaining throughout the series.

Poor season, solid finale. Very cathartic end for Homey and an emotional, necessary, farewell to Butcher (and Terror :().

My guess on the Gen V stuff is that the viewership didn't have the numbers to warrant integrating the storylines any more than they already did, as it would be too confusing for the majority of viewers.

Amazon caught a bad case of Marvelitis and it made a poor last two seasons even worse. Close out your initial series in a franchise before you start throwing more at us.

Meh.

I think I'd be pissed off if another season was planned. Gone to liking the show to not giving a shit about any of the characters.

Vought Rising trailer has leaked.

It looks so much better than Season 5.

I think the finale was ok? Like it had way too much to tie up and mostly did. A lot of terrible dialogue and plot holes but you’d expect that at this point.

But it’s just mad that homelander barely did anything to Kimiko and Butcher after bigging him up as a fecking god for so long

Also felt like the budget for the whole season was 10 dollars. Because everything seemed to take place in rooms with no more than 5 people. Some of the fight scenes in early scenes were epic, where was all that?

I didn't totally hate that as a finale - I certainly wouldn't put anywhere near the level of GOT. I think the rest of season 5 being as poor as it was (besides episode 1) took away a lot of the weight that some of the big moments could otherwise have landed with though.

I'll start with Homelander's death. As others have mentioned, the power-scaling in the fight leading up to it really didn't make much sense. I think that's a valid criticism but, whether fairly or not, it's one that I could forgive a little more if the payoff from it had been stronger. As it was, I don't think the rest of this season did enough to actually showcase what a truly despicable and simultaneously terrifying piece of shite he was. I know that's a strange thing to say about a guy who presided over "labour camps" and had no qualms about killing millions of "non-believers" but for feck sake, we never actually got to see him snap! If we'd had even a scene of him actually lasering a crowd of these "non-believers", his threat of "oblivion" in his final address would've felt more real and raised the stakes in that final fight.

Now onto the other big death - Butcher. I'm going to be completely honest, I actually really liked the scene itself. I feel that Urban and Quaid really stuck the ending and to my mind, it felt like a very fitting conclusion to Butcher's story. Again, though, I think it'd have benefitted had Butcher's switch-up from "happy that 'Omelanda's dead" back to "nah, they've all gotta go mate" wasn't quite so fast. I think I sort of understand what they were going for - with Ryan wanting nothing to do with him and Terror dying, I think it was supposed to hit home that his need for vengeance was all he had. That being said, I don't think it helped that both of those things happened in consecutive scenes.

My honest take is that this episode would've been better split in two parts. I think having episode 7 be dedicated entirely to the Homelander fight, ending in his death, and 8 being dedicated to life after Homelander with us really seeing that Butcher had nothing else to live for could've made the payoff to both scenes much stronger.

To summarise all of that without spoilers, I'd probably say it was about a 5 or 6 out of 10 finale that could possibly have ended up being a 7 or 8 if the earlier episodes hadn't very obviously spent so much time trying to ram the spin-offs down our throats.

I mean we knew pretty early on nothing was saving this season. It has all been discussed thoroughly. Again, they had the buildup, they had the character development, and they choose to squander it this season. The finale wasn't trash but the pacing was off, it was too crammed because they left so much to do for the finale.

Whether people watched Gen V or not those characters integrating into the team and playing a more important role would have been far better than wasting all those episodes on looking for V1 and prepping the Vaught Rising supporting cast in the old folks home. I mean big picture here. Gen V meant nothing. 2 seasons of buildup the biggest thing to come of it was the virus I mean that was successfully used but you didn't need that show for that.

Even the big v1 storyline in the end what's the difference they could have done the same finale without him having took v1 because you wouldn't know there was a power level up from the fight. It was completely pointless.

Really enjoyed it. Nice ending. Definitely dragged in the last two season, but it was a fun journey. A great idea that wasn't a great comic and only had so much life in it as a television series. Just take it for what it is.

I'm torn between that brutal beating and death Homelander got (& deserved) and just beating him half to death but keeping him alive to live the rest of his life without his power! I was leaning towards the latter until he started squirming like a little b****, begging to suck Butcher off just to save his own life. It was giving Wormtail vibes, so then I preferred the beating and death!

I don’t think that it’s established in this universe but maybe he could’ve gotten another shot of V to regain his powers back in that scenario? There’s certainly a correlation between DNA and V in terms of the final result and his DNA stayed the same.

Excellent point harms. I just assumed not, but you're right, it was never really discussed/mentioned/confirmed from what i recall either.

I enjoyed it well enough for what it was, with only one weirdly paced episode in thec final series. In some ways not as good as previous series, but playing up the Trump/MAGA parallels was also great. The finale was pretty decent for fun satirical comedy superhero popcorn and wrapped it all up decently.

Whatever about what would have been the best punishment for Homelander, it would have seemed wildly out of character for Butcher to let him live. His idea of justice/revenge is usually pretty direct.

Started off well but was just TOO ott the last couple of seasons.

Decent finale. Glad it’s finished now as definitely had ran its course. This and the last 2 seasons were nowhere near as good as the first 2.

What a steaming pipe of junk that series ending was.

Series should have finished at back end of season. 3.

Glad it's done. Finale didn't completely suck, which is a relief.

Homelander's end was terrible, imo. I get that they wanted to make him look weak without his powers and that's fine, but the dialogue was so absurdly ham-fisted that I couldn't take it seriously. Have Homelander beg to just disappear somewhere, "You'll never see me again I promise" type of thing instead of the dumbest version of the arc they wanted to convey.

Seems strange it would be so hard to end on a high note. So many shows seem to have disappointed their final season. Maybe writer burnout.

It was alright. The Gen V stuff seemed like a waste of time in the end and it felt like the series got increasingly obsessed with dicks and arseholes, but it was entertaining enough. Certainly not the worst ending or final season I’ve seen.
