Television The Boys

Watched the finale last night. What a missed opportunity. It seemed like they took the criticism of the show and simply leaned into everything people were saying they hated about it.

Frenchy and Kumiko is a stupid development you say? How about we have her talk this season and then really milk their relationship? She is so much better using ASL.

Cringey dialogue? We have seen all of your assholes!

Fan service, plot armor, one episode only rules, etc. How does the big pussy Hughie suddenly know how to fight and not have his spine broken in half when hit by a superhero? Maybe they said somewhere and I forgot. How does Ryan keep getting killed and coming back? Why did the priest guy accept a titanium ball gag if his head was going to explode using it? The whole point was his voice power wouldn’t break it, but that energy would have to go somewhere. I honestly just couldn’t wait for this to end.

I could go on but I’m making more effort on this comment than the writers did on that episode. I’d be embarrassed to have my name associated with that writing.

Definitely in the conversation for worst series finale ever.

Without giving spoilers, does it make sense to skip the season and go directly to the finale? I didn't enjoyed a single moment of the last season, and while I liked the third season, felt its ending was stupid and undid all of it. Effectively, I haven't enjoyed it since the first two seasons which IMO were excellent.

And reading the comments here, seems like this season was a dissapointment.
Yes.

He got put somewhere nice and convenient for the spin off. Yay. Will not be watching, done with this universe.
100%. Each season mad eme care less about one or two of the main characters to the point that I realized any of the main cast getting killed would not have made a difference to me. I went from liking the Hughie - Starlight relationship to actively hating Hughie and wondering why Starlight was still in the show. They sorta positioned her as the one to defeat Hometurkey then said nah feck it and had her just stand around a lot doing nothing.

The final was alright, the biggest complain is about the uneven pace of the season. 5 minutes in the final and we already know Kimiko is the ultimate weapon. Where did that come from? The whole season felt like a drag, and was going in completely different direction.

I feel like the directors couldn't decide what this show is. It's always a threat if your comedy is about a guy dressed as a rock wanking to erupting vulcan (which I found hilarious, with my sense of humour of 15 year old). But even then I felt the arseholes memo was a bit too much and cringe. They also introduced too many plots. It didn't feel like the final season at all. What was the purpose of Ryan, or Starlight? It could've been any other sup fulfilling the same function.

I want to say there's something wrong with actors chemistry. Or maybe it's just simply bad writing, but everyone apart from butcher felt a bit annoying.

I am glad this is over now. I loved first 3 seasons, but the last two felt like a different show. It wasn't even like the ideas were wrong, they just couldn't decide where to go with it.

It was a good show in the end, with potential of a great one - which is unfortunate. Maybe someone can recommend sth similar to this?

I enjoyed it well enough for what it was, with only one weirdly paced episode in thec final series. In some ways not as good as previous series, but playing up the Trump/MAGA parallels was also great. The finale was pretty decent for fun satirical comedy superhero popcorn and wrapped it all up decently.
Yeah I enjoyed that aspect. The whole HL is god thing you could imagine Trump saying

The threat of Homelander was massively undermined by how well other supes brawled with him. Basically seems like they could have got together 5 strong supes at any time and just kicked his ass.

I keep getting adverts showing how highly this is rated. Zoned out during S1 Ep 1, should I give it another go?
Well if you dont like it at its best probably not worth slogging through how dire it gets to an underwhelming finish

How come Sister Sage, the smartest person in the world, didn't notice the tracking pendant around Golden Geisha's neck yet noticed the bulge in Bombsight's pocket?

Surely the world's smart women would have done a little bit of background research and realised that Homelander could have tracked them down easily through that.

She's a comic book smartest person in the world.

Even the world's smartest person makes mistakes choker!

Honestly I think some people just wait to see what the GenV subReddit are complaining about before they regurgitate it on here.

This really did annoy me. At least off camera she managed to speed up the Soldier Boy process for Kumiko. Even if they couldn't write a "smart" character they could've done a lot better than just having her turn around every now and then and say "I knew that was going to happen." She's also funny as feck when she's dumb.

She also goes from smartest to dumbest without her powers. The line about British royal guard didn't just show a lack of superpowers, but any functioning brain activity

I skimmed through the ending of the comics and I think if they put that on screen, it would've been even worse.

Homelander's heinous acts are revealed to the world and while he did evil stuff, he said he can't remember doing these things and is sickened by some of them, he actually vomits in disgust.

That's because Black Noir did them. Black Noir is revealed to be a more powerful Homelander clone and a failsafe to kill Homelander should Vought ever need to. Black Noir did those acts (like raping Butcher's wife and literally eating babies) because killing Homelander was his mission but he never got to go through with his mission as Homelander was always kept in check really so he went crazy and did evil shit to frame Homelander.

Black Noir kills Homelander in the White House (we don't even see this, it happens off panel), he then walks out to front of the White House carrying what is left of Homelander, his sternum, then the army blow him apart and Butcher crowbars his head open like the show.

Then Butcher starts his plan to kill all supes and kills MM, Frenchie and Kimiko who are trying to stop him. The end is more or the less the same where Hughie kills Butcher.

So it's not like they even had good source material they ignored. It was shit.

Also, Starlight barely features towards the end.

I like this comic book ending, above, better than what they showed us, with Homelander turning into Horsechoker right before Butcher kills him.

Just binged the season. Damn, the finale was predictable but good. Didn't mind the way they did that. Cos that's what the story was building to

But the season as a whole felt so underwhelming and could have been done in maybe 4 episodes. It's insane to think 8 Eps was too long but that's what this was.

The genV people getting a few minutes and fking off was such a disappointment. Waste of two seasons especially Marie.

They honestly could have just ended this in s3 and it would have been three fun seasons. Instead it feels so dragged.

Such a shame.

The ohFather was a good character addition.
And I liked the endings for both butcher and homelander.

Also read that the budget for this was stripped and given to the Noir Spider-Man. Wonder if that played a part?

I enjoyed it overall and the finale was good.

However, the fleeting glance towards the Gen V characters after seemingly pointing towards a more impactful crossover, along with the focus on Soldier Boy and the pointless introduction of the old folks were low points. Such a blatantly transparent attempt to push the prequel, which after that I'm really not arsed about, took away from the final season for me.
