With everything that is going on, it feels like a massive moment for civilisation in the 21st century. A global recession almost seems inevitable at this point, but what other dominos do you think will fall because of this outbreak and the upcoming recession?

One that seems possible, is a regime change in Iran. With the number of those infected in their top decision makers (and their respective ages) and if the outbreak results in the population themselves getting sick of the regime, it could result in a regime change. How does that then, impact the middle East in general?

It's a purely speculative thread of course, but I'm hoping some of the posters who are more historically and politically knowledge might have a few thoughts to share on this topic. This isn't exclusive to just geopolitical/economic effects but also social effects. How will this change the way society behaves?

This will probably be the historical event that convinces humans they have to cooperate more in the future.

Still don't see it.

Unless it is the event that finally gets people in the West to steer away from divisive leaders, this may just make it worse.

Cooperate with authorities? Sure, I think that can be a positive outcome. I think in the last 10-20 years we've seen stupidity being given the license to grow louder and louder, and hopefully this teaches us that we need to kill it right at the root. People like the Antivaxers being among them.

Dominos will probably do quite well out of this to be fair, a lot of pizzas will need to be delivered.

Hopefully it'll lead to voters starting to actually listen to what politicians say and promise and start holding them genuinely accountable again. Politics has turned into a giant reality TV show where the teams and personalities are the only thing that matter, and the policies and actions are basically irrelevant. Perhaps when people see large numbers of people they know dying, then they'll start to realize that politics actually matters and has a life and death impact on their lives.

Also hopefully it'll remind people why the NHS actually fecking matters.

As in Governments need to have a uniform plan for this and similar events in the future. Since pandemics affect the globe, there can't be an organized effort in one country and random, laissez-faire improvisation in others. It has to be a unified, coordinated effort that is delivered quickly. There need to be international agreements in place for something like this.

If its true that China is now recovering from the virus then it will give a lot of people the idea that a authoritarian capitalist state is the way to go.

Which would be worrying.

1. Supply chains will become tighter and China will lose a lot of its manufacturing jobs.
2. The cruise ship industry will suffer a permanent downturn for good.
3. The reduction in travel plus fewer flights would mean that for the first time ever we will see a reduction in co2 emissions.
4. More workplaces will start realizing the benefits of remote work and think offices are mere extra real estate cost they can do without.

If China can continue to suppress the outbreak and it explodes uncontrollably in the US, China will surpass the United States as the world's foremost power within the next five years.

If there's a top ten coronavirus tracks list then surely Under Pressure has to be #1, followed closely by Who wants to live forever.

Yep. As China is pretty autonomous it will gradually, region by region, ensure its populace is infected in a controlled manner. Those that survive are workers, those that die are stats in their population control charts. Thus China will be the first large country ready for the post-apocalypse world.

Or we'll get a vaccine soon enough and this won't even register as a memorable event in 5 years time.

As if humans will learn. We have swine, ebola, sars. H1n1, didnt change nothing. People is very good at forgetting stuff after some time.

Bushfire. Climate changes. Even ww2 is starting to be forgotten with brexit.

You curse, critized, but give it 2 or 3 months it'll be business as usual.

Speaking of American healthcare. I read a story that compared two cases of a tourist calling a doctor.

An American tourist went to the Netherlands, got a stomach bug and called a doctor. The doctor said, it's probably nothing serious, stay hydrated, check your temperature three times a day and see if it passes with a few days. She got a bill for 25 euro's, though usually the actual payment of this, isn't really enforced.

The second case was a Dutch tourist in Miami in the same situation. The doctor came over right away, perscribed quite a few different meds and presented a bill of 2400 dollars to be paid right there.

Supposedly this is a true story. But is it really?!

Interestingly, if it were a more deadly disease, the entire human race - incredible progress as we've made over the past century - could get decimated or even completely wiped out. The Universe could care less if humans exist or not.

This will happen imo. I think most companies just didn't want to try it and they will be surprised by how well it works. Was always going to happen at some point of course but nowhere near as fast.

It might make us revisit the wisdom of globalization in production/supply chains.
I don't think that is reversible. Instead, countries will have to tighten up international agreements on how to deal with black swan events, which is imo both realistic and essential.

There’s no reason avian flu can’t suddenly jump into human transmission and could be equally as infective as SARS-Cov-2. It has a CFR of >60%.

An economic boom from schoolboys selling hand sanitizer at £1 per squirt.
