The effect of United influencers on the fan base

The toxicity only applies to one person, IMO. Surely all fan channels will air their criticism when there are few results to show for, but I only see one opinion maker really thriving on negativity. The likes of Flex, Beth, UnitedPeoplesTV (Sam), Stretford Paddock (Howson and McKola included) are not toxic. Goldbridge is.

Beth is a presenter on United Stand, which belongs to Goldbridge.

We've been mainly playing shit football for a couple of seasons now, but still some posters believe that the "negative" ones are only influenced by media and couldn't possible think for themselves.

It's frankly quite condescending and feels like its come from a place of moral superiority where only they can see the whole plan.

Get some wins and the negativity stops, it's pretty simple.
It’s not merely about negativity stemming from poor results - it’s about the way that negativity is conveyed. We finished second and third under Ole, that didn’t stop Goldbridge from ridiculing him in every possible way, week in and week out. When Ratcliffe came in on the ownership side, the headline was “Ratcliffe – the enemy of United!”. His treatment of McTominay over months and years went far beyond criticism - it was outright bullying. He read out Matic’s name while making puking sounds. Those are just a few examples.

I’ve got respect for anyone who can build a YouTube following without a production company backing them, and Goldbridge is genuinely good at what he does. He’s entertaining, often pretty funny, and I don’t doubt he’s a proper United fan. But he’s also a very cynical one - someone who makes money by throwing out bold takes built on thin air and endlessly recycling his never-ending song of complaints. The fan channel's Donald Trump.

I feel the former United pundits continual criticism of current United players is incredibly odd. They know its harsh, but they refuse to acknowledge how their words could affect the player.

Nowadays someone has a video right after the game of all mistakes he made, somwtimes there arent even fecking mistakes but the video makes it look awful. That did not exist in Nevilles day etc. Criticism by the paper and match of the day doesnt compare to endless recycling of news on talksport, x accounts, bots etc "Former United captain said this about current United captain"

Neville for example, would ask their mum not to check the paper on Monday. Now fans are finding relatives and giving them dogs abuse. Harry Maguires family got it in the neck daily.

Of course I want us to play better, but we are helping tear our players down before they even get on the pitch.

That doesn’t stop her from airing her own opinions, often very different from his. Actually, I don’t mind any of the other regulars on United Stand.

Her opinions on her own account are fine, but she is a cog in the 24/7 litany of nonsense of the Goldbridge empire.

It’s very likely he only ever went to the city ground as a kid.
I find it very likely he latched into United as our fans will watch any old bile and there a darn lot of them. So an ideal cash cow for him to tap into. Forest thing will never go away as he comes across as a chancer and full of shite, so why would anyone believe him?
Theres so many things to criticise him about and its this type of made up shit that takes away his critics credibility.

You have said nothing but guessing.

I lived in Manchester when I was a kid until I was 10 (moved to Manchester when I was 1) and then I moved back to Northern Ireland and spent the rest of my childhood in Bangor.

So you could guess that I followed Bangor and it was very likely I only went to clandyboye park.

But your presumption would be wrong, I support linfield in belfast because my granda took me to the games and have been a season ticket holder/full member for 30 years.

MG has so many things to make fun of, its stupid to latch onto a rumour created a decade ago by a rival YouTuber.

I also think it's funny how people get worked up about anyone on YouTube or any media, just dont watch it....Solved

Influencers???
It is beyond me how anyone takes these clowns seriously!.

No effects on me because most of them are reactionary. If i want reaction Id just go visit match day threads.

I'd argue the toxicity and negativity are mostly due to negative results.

Start winning, and the noise mostly goes away.
This.

These are professional athletes paid lifechanging amount of money. If they get depressed by social media - get the feck of it

Mark Goldbridge cares about United more than most, United owners included. Blaming him for our players and owners being morons is laughable

United fans have always been weirdly toxic about their own players. It happened straight after Fergie left - players like Rio/Vidic were thrown under the bus by our fans. I think Fergie did a great job of protecting the players from the clubs own fanbase for the most part - the managers since then have generally used them as a shield to protect themselves.

It's such a weird phenomenon, our fans generally dislike the blokes that actually go out and kick the ball around - but instead love the bloke doing managerial stuff (whatever that is).
I don't remember anyone saying Rip and Vidic had to go? The blame was on the manager, they went from being a premier league winning duo to barely getting into Europe. The first major player the fan base wanted rid of was Rooney.

I do find it really weird how people insist on this even when told it’s incorrect. I don’t get what is so hard to believe about someone from Nottingham supporting Manchester United.
Or yet this implication that basically this bloke grew up supporting Forest, supported them his early adult life, worked as a detective in the police force……..Then one day said it himself “I’m gonna quit my job in the police and pretend to be a man United fan online to make money”… I mean is THAT the story we’re supposed to believe?

Also, there is a literal photo of him in a United kit as a child. If that helps..
Did you grow up with him and know different?
I don’t believe he’s very honest and plays the victim card very frequently.
If I were going to make a content account to discuss football, it’d be United, Liverpool or Arsenal, as you target an audience for income.
Never seen the photo, I’ve got an old photo of me in a Middlesbrough top, doesn’t mean I ever supported them.
You can go ahead and believe whatever he puts out, if you so wish. I can believe whatever I want about him, based on his body language, tone and slightly changing stories, that point to lies being told. There are numerous people like him on the internet and people rush to defend them, whilst ignoring the obvious.

The Bruno discontent over the last couple of years and overuse of "This group of players letting the manager down again" excuses shows how insidious a guy like MG can be, these narratives get placed out there and group think dynamics pick them up.

I believe players have often become an easy out in terms of blame and becoming the visible focus of frustration for the structural shambles that Utd have been for years. It has not been a good place for players to develop or perform with any consistency. The recruitment, both in playing staff and coaching appointments have led to a mish-mash of different styles and playing qualities being thrown together which is not an environment that will lead to sustained performance.

These last 3 seasons, Ten Hag was playing a suicidal midfield set up that had no chance of succeeding, none, it was moronic, players trying to make it work every week being made to look foolish covering huge gaps in midfield, then we move to Amorin, and no matter what you think of the merits of his system it can not be argued that it suited the players that he inherited, leading to the worst results in 40 years.

AFTV started this trend.. Goldbridge followed.. You have that fat Irish guy who supports Liverpool out there now doing the same

I went on a massive blocking spree on social media recently and it made it a better experience . For example there used to be this really good page on social media called 90s football. It now just puts out rage bait posts on modern football mainly about United because we are having a bad period so it gets rival fans talking. They have realised that is where the money is. Perfectly summed up football social media. It can’t even be arsed to make content on 90s football which is the name of the page

Regarding pundits. Keane, Neville and Scholes are incredibly negative. Scholes just doesn’t seem that arsed about football which is incredibly frustrating considering how good he was and how most of us wish we had his talent. Rio is a lot more positive about United. Probably why he is so hated by Rival fans. The Scousers were absolutely raging with anger when him and Savage lost their minds against Lyon on commentary last season
That was an awesome moment

- I could say the same to you.. you didn’t grow up with him yet are providing a different account of events to what he’s told and is out there.

- this in incorrect and not at all always the case. There are plenty of very successful content creators who support non big teams. See Thogden, stuntpegg, hitc Stevens, footy adventures.

- Again, you’re going for a less likely scenario or explanation to what you’re factually seeing. What we have here is a bloke wearing a man United top, then telling everyone he supports man United and then proceeding to spend several years watching every man united game. But in your version, he doesn’t actually support United and instead supports Forest. And in fact has spent all these years watching a team he doesn’t support because he knew it would be very easy to make money and become famous by pretending to support man united…

- you can believe whatever you want yeah sure. But the majority of people will believe the facts and what’s placed in front of them.. if you want to do all these mental gymnastics to find an alternative reality that’s up to you. The irony of you saying “ignoring the obvious”…
As if there are several stated cases of random football content creators online pretending to support another team and then spending the best part of a decade watching and talking about that team every week in order to make these supposed ‘big bucks’ online. The absolute overwhelming majority of football content creators do not make significant money.

I prefer not to take anything he says as honest. Looks like you take it all as gospel. As the facts you’re on about are only things he’s said during his crap content. I see fake name, fake fan. We will never agree on anything to do with him, he’s not even entertaining, just annoying. Enjoy listening to him whine on endlessly…

It’s hard to be negative around a successful club. Try putting together 2 consecutive wins before passing the blame on to anyone else.
I would tend to disagree.
Looking back to Mourinho, Van Gaal or Ole, we were already considered in a downfall and banter club even though we had some relatively good results and trophies, albeit minor.

The reason you made this thread is the same reason he is the most successful football YouTuber.

It’s international break, until Ratcliffe interview and then the sale rumors he literally had nothing to talk about. Insert something controversial like the Bruno take. It rattled you and many others and that is literally him doing his job and staying relevant.

Journalist do the same thing on a daily basis but your brain dismisses them and you should do the same with Goldbridge.

Goldbridge is excellent at what he does and it still amuses me that people don’t quite get the YouTube world. I often troll him by leaving comments about him acting juvenile and being emotional but I know he’s just doing his job.

He saw the space in the market many years ago and he grabbed the opportunity. I respect it.

I truly hate to admit it, but this is all bang on, especially the YouTube world bit.

I am from a different era and I only watch YouTube and nothing like Twitter etc but I fell into the trap of wasting time watching nonsense channels.

YouTube is great for documentaries and trying to fix things :) , the rest is just clickbait, totally fake or random nonsense.

95% of YouTube is just for clicks and they will do or say whatever it takes to reel you in.

What's his job?

His company raked in about £4m in 2023, so you could say being a YouTube influencer is not even his own job, but he employs quite a few others as well. Expect his empire of relentless spam to grow exponentially now that he has somehow wormed his way into broadcasting Bundesliga games on YouTube.

Goldbridge has been widely criticized for his toxic, idiotic hot takes by United fans for years. Just as AFTV were criticized by Arsenal fans for thriving off Arsenal's mediocrity from 2014-20ish - resulting in them eventually changing their business model - Goldbridge does the same by exploiting United fan frustrations for personal profit, and in the process ratcheting up more toxicity to line his own pockets.

We all know what he does and why he does it but that don't mean sane fans have to like the way he exploits to make cash. He's a cnut and should be called out for being one. And less said about his hysterical following the better.

So talking about Utd fans frustrations is exploiting them?

So he does what mainstream media do then. Where’s the thread on toxic SkySports, TalkSport, ESPN etc..? There is no difference.

In fact they are all copying Goldbridge playbook and moving into YouTube to do exactly that..talk about Utd fans frustrations. See The Overlap, TalkSport has a Utd show which they don’t have for any other club.

People consume YT more than they would SkySports News. He spotted this was the way the world was going and setup his channel.

Like him or hate him he is also charismatic. But blaming him for turning the fans toxic suggests that most fans just blindly believe everything he says and yet know when MSM are using Utd for clicks. Fans aren’t that stupid. He’s literally just a man who setup a Utd fan channel at the right time.

AFTV isn’t “toxic” anymore because the club has improved drastically.

We have been shit for over a decade and we are bigger than Arsenal. If we improved, he wouldn’t be discussing fan frustrations.

It's a fecking curse and he's one of the worst. The fact is his "views" aren't opinions they're targeted content for engagement which predictably means extreme positions.

There's very little engagement for content that highlights the middle ground. It's all gotchas and content geared to people with pre-existing opinions sharing it or reaffirming their own views.

Over the last year or two there's definitely been an increase in people just parroting lines from these influencers.

Going to go against the trend. A lot of social media channels are basically the new form of media. There’s no difference watching a debate on United Stand or Sky Sports. To say otherwise is a form of elitism or inability to adapt to changing times. Goldbridge can make a good point or bad point, but at same time so can pundits and journalists on mainstream media. Also anyone who says journalists and pundits are not agenda driven is blind and missing the point why fan based channels grow in popularity.

But one of the reasons that people will watch United Stand is because often he or others will speak about the obvious issues that pundits and mainstream media will ignore. In the past it was things like Maguire playing badly and needing dropping, something the media and pundits ignored. Currently it’s about Bruno in CM not working. Something I think, but the media and pundits are focused on playing 5 at the back.

Like everything the balance is in the middle with him and United stand.

A lot of the influencers just pick things we or most of the fan base already see. I don’t see them having agendas as such against players or not more so than the normal pundits. I mean is there anyone with a Souness Paul Pogba like grudge?

I think the real danger to fans has been the over use of stats and the influence that has on the perception of players. It really does seem that people no longer understand the game or maybe people weren’t brought up playing and just watched football so they don’t quite understand football.

Thing is these influencers claim to be fans of the club. Souness and his agenda. That's just his Liverpool bias.

If you're not either: a) Former player of some capacity or b) a match-going fan then you shouldn't be take seriously as a "voice" especially within the UK.

I'd have no issue with Goldbridge if he was a match-going red. As it is, he may aswell be talking about plot points in Corrie or Emmerdale. Football is nothing more than a combination of a TV show and a tool for social media engagement for him.

I disagree with Adam Mckola and Howson on Stretford Paddock a lot but ultimately, they go to matches and their opinions have some level of credence as they actually engage with the club outside of the Internet.

Fully agree goldbridge isn’t toxic at all, what is toxic is the owners and allowing the expectation level of this club to decrease. Goldbridge calls out these terrible owners and terrible decisions they’ve made the last ten years, and he’s got a personality, I’d argue he is more in touch with man united than anyone on social media. Certain people on here spread toxicity as they believe their opinions are more important than others, due to an imaginary heirachy that’s been built up by people on here. You don’t go to the games so your opinions don’t matter! I’d go as far as to say anyone paying for a ticket and allowing these goons to stay are adding to our problem. Wouldn’t give them steam off my p155, as they have ruined this club. Pray for a full sale

I genuinely love how many "new" accounts pop up when we talk about Goldbridge. This is how he got popular at the beginning. Would make a load of new accounts and talk about himself. I appreciate the hustle.

Saying sky sports is the same standard as United Stand is hilarious. Pundits can chat biased rubbish, but they are still a different level to the public. This shouldn't even need explaining...

One has actually ex footballers and managers on it, the others all watch something on the tele. They treat it like a tv show.

Adam cleary does great analysis, from what i've seen. Stretford paddock are great for fan opinions. Anyone else outside the game is putting on an entertainment channel

Goldbridge is a stain on the underwear of life and absolutley no United fan should even acknowledge his existance let alone watch his shit.

Couldnt believe hes doing a touring show now and people actually pay to see him.

Having respect for someone just because they identified a way to exploit people for money is something I will never understand.

100%. The eye test is the ultimate and final test. Now I understand how stats are a necessity in scouting, save time and money to identify a list of players but ultimately it will be the visuals. Stats for teams can be the most misleading except for maybe the most basic ones eg possession percentage, number of passes, those usually don’t lie.

Really well said. I often find myself agreeing with your posts especially on this subject.

There's a massive difference here.

For all the faults of the traditional pundits, they've played the game and can offer some level of insight.

If you're a fan that goes to matches, you can offer a 'view from the terraces'. Again, most of the Stretford Paddock lads at least go to matches so there's a level of respectability attached to their opinion.

Goldbridge is discussing a TV show that he watches. Almost, all of his relationship with the club is him using it to gain engagement and make money. He's also incredibly agenda driven. Again, this wouldn't be such an issue but he's now been treated as a man who has a legitimate voice on the club which is suddenly where all the other issues become problematic.
