Watched this last night after being told how good it was and that Hugh Grant was “back to his best” etc well i just didn’t see it. Don’t get me wrong it
was entertaining but some parts felt really hammy, the million different ways they tried to make “weed” sound ganster like calling it “Super Skunky Cheese” or something was abit cringe. I thought Hugh Grant was “okay” but he didn’t seem natural to me, too cheesily scripted even if he was supposed to be abit humorous, which actually is probably my main complaint of the whole film. Like the exchange below, just felt abit cringey;
Just went and saw it. It’s good. Colin Farrell is fantastic as always. He’s brilliant in dark comedies.
“Are you training or what you black cnut?”
“Did he just call me a black cnut? He can’t call me that boss, that’s racist”
“It’s not racist Errol. Because you are black, and you are also a cnut. Those are just the facts. Hence, you’re a black cnut. So no, it’s not racist is it?”
Also, Michael’s associate guy, i forget his name, but he was clearly supposed to be played by Tom Hardy that they dressed and did the make up on the guy to be exactly like him. He looked weird in it. Colin Farrell and “his boys” was again cheesey/hammy. The usual baddy played by a chinese guy but with a ganstery accent was off putting. The jewish guy looking to buy the business, i mean, in what world would a smug-like character like that be a genuinely believeable antagonist in a film like this?
I just found myself eye rolling through alot of it; like my grandad had tried to make a film about drugs and gansters and how the underworld would work all by using his imagination.
Anyways, I don’t usually review films ever as I’m sure you can tell but felt motivated to do one on this for some reason. Id still give it 6-7/10 though.
