The impact of AFCON

Few good things to come from Afcon are more game times for Mainoo and probably Lacey debut as well. But the one I am more looking forward to is for Bruno to go back to # 10 role. Without Mbeumo, he should have the chance to play there unless Amorin is as stubborn as a rock.

Here we are a couple of weeks after your post, Bruno out abd Mainoo also injured, its unbelievable bad luck, maybe Mount can now make himself a main man, quite often injuries and players having to miss games presents opportunities for others it is up to them to take the chance.
 
Its a disaster on whos missing. No wonder SAF didn't buy many Africans through this competition. Mbeumo Amad Mazroui are all integral parts to the team. Won't win a game while there away. Pick up few injuries as well at same time like we have and its a depleted squad.

Its a chance for others to come into the team and stake their claim, we all knew the rule regarding African players and injuries happen to all clubs, we should be able to beat Newcastle and Wolves at home with the players we have available. We can still field 9 or 10 internationals.
 
I still don't understand why a big international tournament could be allowed to be carried out during league season in most countries without any international break.

Other teams have it far worse.

Get on with it - we shouldn’t be making such pathetic excuses. Hopefully the leadership at United aren’t.

With the Squad utd got other's have it worse! Blood hope your not on the board or utd definitely screwed if you think this lot can manage the same with whats missing.

That’s clearly the fault of the football club then!

Far too much wining and creating excuses from some fans. Man Utd have three players away - pathetic that fans are crying into their dry turkey leftovers.
 
Personally I think it needs to be on a 4 year cycle. I also don't get why it's in December/Jan when it's the warmest time of year for large parts of Africa. Happy to be enlightened.

Of course its the clubs fault its the owners fault its a mess that they have allowed the squad depth to be so so poor. No excuses the club is run by parasites, and the ones left to pick up the pieces is the fans. Yes your correct it is the clubs fault.. I don't eat Turkey by the way.

It was played in the summer in 2019 for first time in ages in Egypt. I think it was the plan to have it in the summer but then Covid happened which postponed the 2021 edition (?) and then of course FIFA creates World Club Cup which ruled it out of last summer.

Also the CL/Europa expansion is causing issues otherwise it would just stay in mid January/early Feburary time slot rather than the messy start in late December.

Good points. Fifa money grab impacting domestic leagues ultimately.
 
If the impact is Amorim being forced into playing a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 as we are tonight and looking the best I’ve seen us look in a long time across the pitch then it’s ironically impacted us in a very positive way.

We’re missing Mazraoui, Mbeumo and Amad who in a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 would all be in our first choice 11 as would Bruno and De Ligt and arguably Mainoo yet Dalot, Ugarte and Dorgu are all looking good tonight and Mount is showing the player can be whilst missing 5-6 of our first choice team.

2023 version was supposed to be played in Summer. But the tournament was hosted by Ivory Coast. In June/July there, the heat is ridiculous. And in June, it rains. Constantly and heavily, particularly in the South. So it was moved to January 2024.

This year's tournament was supposed to be in the Summer but was moved because of FIFA bloated, grasping and pointless Club World Cup.

2027 tournament is in Tanzania, Uganda Kenya. Scheduled for June and July.

From 2028 the competition is due to become a quadrennial tournament, in leap years. Matching the Euros.

Not sure if it's been mentioned by others but it's because this was moved from the summer to accommodate the Club World Cup.
 
So any prediction when Amad, Mbeumo and Mazroui will return?!

Group stage? Round 16? Quarter? Semi? Final?

Mbeumo - Cameroon looks certain to qualify from group stage. Same for Amad - Ivory Coast and Mazroui - Morocco.

Round of 16 - Jan 3 to 7 (Mbeumo back)
Quarter - Jan 9 to 11 (Amad back)
Semi - Jan 14 to 15
Third Place - Jan 17 (Mazroui back)
Final - Jan 19

Yes, I think Mbeumo and Amad will be back for City game. Mazroui not likely as Morocco is expected to go deep into the tournament.

We do not need them until the city game, we should beat Wolves, Burnley in the league and Brighton in the cup all teams who are currently hopeless. Leeds away could be tricky.

Brighton can show up. We are seriously weakened at the moment. No easy games. If we can get DeLigt, Mount and Mainoo back then we will be fine but we are paper thin at the moment. Love Mbeumo and Amad for the city game especially after Amads performance last season in that fixture.

Unfortunately I think Mount and De Ligt are great players but both are injury prone its very difficult to get a settled team. Plus i think Amorin is very cautious at bringing injured players back too soon.

Whilst we are are short on numbers the fixtures have been as kind as they could have been playing 2 of the bottom 3, having 3 home games out of the 5 I fancy us to win them all prior to the city game. Then it will be up to Amorin does he keep a winning team or does he put the big names straight back in.

If we win all 5 he’ll start as before but I think we need Mbeumo and Amad to have a good chance against City. We when all fit are one of the best attacking teams in the league and the only way to stand a chance against city is to scare them and make them play further back. I think 11 v 11 we have a chance if we have the players.

Morrocco will play Cameroon in the quarter finals (if they both win their ro16) so we're guaranteed to get one of our players back early.

Ivory coast have Burkina Faso in the ro16 and Egypt in the quarter finals so we might get Amad back too.

I can’t see Cameroon winning thier next match anyway as they have been so poor.
Mbuemo form has been rubbish as well, he has taken his poor form to Afcon.
Hope he can regain his early form soon as we really need a firing Mbuemo

We are unbeaten without the Afcon players and the so called injured players.
 
5/12 so far. Though looking at the fixture list you'd expect to be at least 9/12 there. Doesn't help with Mount and Bruno being absent too.
 
6/15. You can blame Amorim, but this competition happening mid season with games played weekend and midweek has done us proper too

Fecking atrocious return from a very manageable set of games. Still, I’d argue the number would be higher if we had Mbeumo and Amad.
 
Completely destroyed our season this has. Left us so stretched squad wise we've been having to give kids game time that are miles off being ready.
