The lack of athleticism

An article from October 17th this year, a bit over a month ago

At that point our quickest player recorded was Garnacho.

More importantly to the topic of this thread, the player with the most recorded sprints for us was Dalot with 123. Our highest player was 12th of 20, so lower side of half way.

Dalot gets a lot of critisism on here, but its interesting that he's our player doing the most intense running. We can also keep in mind that other players might have run as much as him if they had been available and playing as much. But thats another factor, the fact that he's constantly fit and able to be picked

Oh and City had the least amount of sprints, with Haaland being their most. They are of course an abnormal team with their own style. So Liverpool's most was Salah/Szoboszlai both at 137 sprints - more than any of our players, and Arsenal had Martinelli at 119 lower than Dalot. Probably better markers that yes sprinting a lot is usually a good thing despite City having the least.

Now onto the next running stat. Distance running. Would you believe it, our highest distance runner at that point was Mainoo. He was 14th of the 20 clubs and players, but keep in mind how long he's been out now having played 574 mins, while some of our players like Dalot, Bruno and Mazaraoui have played over 900 - less by October 17th, but you get the point.

Mainoo's mobility and running gets plenty of critisism but although he's not the fastest, he's doing the most distance running in the team. Gravenberch who was Liverpool's most at the time and has now played almost double the minutes was only slightly ahead of Mainoo by 3.5km and at 10th of 20.

They also had a category for who walked the most distance and for us it was Dalot.

I was just thinking, remember when Erik made them run the distance they were outrun by an opponent early on in his tenure? He could see the athleticism missing at that point too, why did he stop? I thought it was such a good move at the time. I'd never want to be out run by any team ever!

Anyone know the story of Herb Brooks? Ice Hockey manager who got a bunch of USA kids to beat USSR in the 'Miracle on Ice' ? He made them skate until they were sick. There's just no way a United manager should let players finish a training session (a few days away from a game) not completely spent. I might be old school in that regards

"Erik.....could see the athleticism missing at that point too, why did he stop ?" The problem was/is that he decided to overlook the lack of athleticism and carry on signing players who primarily had some form of connection with Netherlands or players who he knew previously. Basically, we find ourselves with a new batch of unfit, and in the main, self obsessed INDIVIDUALS. Deja vu beckons, overpaid players who no other club will take, a la. Pogba, Martial, we also suffered Depay, Sanchez, who both appeared to "down tools", I could go on but surely Rangnick was spot on with his assessment of the squad, being six years behind Liverpool, and requiring open heart surgery, and serious investment, and the players needing energy, physicality and intensity. Here we are, more than two years on and we are probably further back in these requirements.
