With due respect to Summerville (I'm sure he is a good professional who works very hard on his craft and doesn't deserve unprovoked criticism), Manchester United needs to aim higher. We don't just need tactical variance or credible depth behind Cunha or Mbeumo, we need players who can challenge the order and be part of the elite bracket for the position (as neither Cunha nor Mbeumo are.)
After a certain point, you only get diminishing returns with the signing of above-average or even
good Premier League players (like Summerville), and need to actively prioritize top-shelf quality rather than more of the same in quantity. We're not well-positioned to add an immediate dose of top-shelf quality. The best wide attackers are already at major clubs and beyond our reach: Lamine Yamal, Kvaratskhelia, Vinícius, Olise and so forth. They are not genuine options, in all likelihood.
Considering that, we might want to aim for players who are not there but could get there, eventually. Summerville doesn't quite fall into that category — he turns 25 in a few months, so what you see is what you are going to get, by and large. And what you see doesn't quite move the needle for the club. We have a rich history with wide attackers, from Best to Giggs to Cristiano, among others, and our squad should appropriately reflect that “heritage”.
That's where the likes of Diomandé and Alajbegović enter the picture. Diomandé is already one of the best dribblers and wide attackers at non-elite clubs at age 19 (with 21 goals + assists in 2600 minutes of football), so a blatantly obvious option with the short, medium and long term in mind. Alajbegović is a bit behind with regard to impact and development but coming along quite nicely (Top 10 for dribbles in the Europa League at age 18 and 18 goals + assists in 2700 minutes of football). These are talents who could feasibly move the needle for us.
Just to highlight how good actually elite wide attackers are...
- Lamine Yamal is an excellent dribbler and playmaker and has 39 goals + assists this season
- Kvaratskhelia is an excellent dribbler and playmaker and has 31 goals + assists this season even though he doesn't play all the time
- Olise is an excellent dribbler and playmaker and has 50 goals + assists this season
We too need excellent dribblers and playmakers who could compare with them for production, if not exactly match them. Shoot, we don't need to look other clubs and their players. Think of the last Manchester United team to win the Champions League. Rooney, Cristiano, Tévez, Scholes, Carrick, Ferdinand, Evra, Vidić, Van der Sar. Absurd levels of individual quality. That needs to to our benchmark and source of inspiration, over the next 3-4 years of building and rebuilding and development.
