The Media Targeting Greenwood

I feel like this needs its own thread. I'd like to implore everyone on this forum to not get drawn into the decided narrative and get behind our player.

He's made mistakes (at 19 who hasn't) and the media have started piling in. This can't be good for his mental health or development at the club. I'm not suggesting he is absolved from any criticism but the media onslaught is way over the top.

Some recent headlines

Bruno Fernandes 'furious with Mason Greenwood' in Man Utd training session
Mason didn't run onto a Bruno pass in training, there wasn't even a verbal altercation.

Bruno Fernandes shows his true colours in leaked WhatsApp rant and Mason Greenwood 'fury'
Same story about him not running onto a pass but three hours later, this time unashamedly with an added quote/story about Bruno from his old club that makes it look connected.

Greenwood ‘failing to understand process’ as ‘concerns’ grow
After the club state that he was ill in training, the media decide Mason is putting in 'lethargic' training sessions.

Man Utd tell Mason Greenwood to improve attitude if he wants new contract
Apparently we're considering letting one of the hottest prospects in football walk away on a free.

This thread is massively necessary, especially for those Utd fans who are jumping in on him too. We have to get right behind and because if we do there’s no doubt in my mind he will reward us on the pitch. Just look at the treatment Foden is getting after doing something even worse (he has a wife and baby!).

The press would rather destroy him because he plays for United, than have a world class talent for England.

How sad is that?

I cannot believe the obsession from the media to make Greenwood look like a bad person. He is 18 made a mistake and its all negative storied about him without knowing the story.

Its a sad state.

It’s always been the same with the English press. They are quick to jump on the England manager whenever it goes wrong but will never take their own responsibly for adding pressure and trying to tear down our players.

Ole has dealt with this well, I feel. He rightly complained at Southgate for taking him on NT duty after asking him not to (which some on here had a go at?) and any time he has dropped criticism Greenwood’s way, it’s always been with a caveat to the media/fans about his age/how he is dealing with stuff and still doing very well.

Made himself a very easy target, so partially it's also his own faults. It was difficult for the media to target Rashford isn't it and instead praised Marcus even for his works. So.. do the maths.

Anyway, just don't believe every single thing the media say. Their plan remains the same being a yellow journalism.

The only way Mason can silence them is to perform on the pitch. With his talents, should be simple but mentally challenging. This is his time to prove to himself and by so, to others. It's his test. Not the first time our players are given this treatment deservedly or undeservedly, and the best of our players performed on the pitch and silence critics, shutting the shit media. Maybe he could also start maturing faster with better behaviors off the pitch, and focusing more on his football career that matters more. That would really help.

Doubt that's the reason.
Did the press try to destroy our other english players eg. Rashford, AWB, etc ?

Selling stories is their goal so maybe we should ignoring their click-bait "news" and just don't believe the things they are spouting. It's too twisting and concluding, making wild creative speculations and all anyway.

Genuine question but do these stories get to the player if they aren't following media news? I'd stay as far away from social media if I was a celebrity

Jim White on Talksport radio bangs on about him relentlesly. 30 mins yesterday devoted to Greenwood "throwing away his talent" because he was lethargic in training for 1 day.

Yes they made stories of him too, but Rashford is as clean as they come so it's hard to find dirt on him.

AWB isn't a high enough profile.

The issue is whether the stories are true or not - it still paints him in a negative light. Now the less intelligent united fans think he's lazy and need to sleep more. You only need to look at every single social media post from United that involves Greenwood.

It has some form of "get some sleep" "get some rest, stop partying" comments underneath.

All this talk of Fernandes being angry at him and trying to drive a wedge between the team. Fernandes isn't that type at all.

Genuine question here, but is the media unconsciously racist and should united and ole call them out publicly for it?

Phil Foden had a partner and a kid when he went to Iceland. He has got away scott free in comparison.

maybe it’s because he’s united and he’s bigger news than city players (harsh but true). I mean Walker was banging escorts whilst we were in proper lockdown snd it barely got a mention.

maybe there is some truth in it, but as others have said, the lads 19 and likely swamped by hangers on. He needs support.

I think players do stay away from tabloid news and social media, or at least try to. But, easier said than done, isn’t it? Especially for a young boy like Mason who has grown up with social media so prevalently.

The younger generation who have grown up with social media, you want them to stay away?

Fans will then call the player arrogant for not communicating with fans.

Even Jose has realised social media is an important tool and has jumped on Instagram.

That's obvious - but then it's part and parcel being a United player. I have full confidence that Mason can come out of it better than ever. Look at Beckham in 1998.

I seen an article yesterday in which Andros Townsend was saying Greenwood should see a sports psychologist. I mean what’s he actually done? Went to a few party’s and banged a few birds? He’s 18 for fecks sake, standard behaviour at that age.

Fortunately, we know exactly why Mason is getting the worst of it.
Do tell...

I assume it’s because this wasn’t an isolated incident with Greenwood?

Kid just needs to get his head down and work hard in training so that is able to perform at his best in games when the opportunity comes along for him. All sort of growing up but Man Utd are always under the spotlight, Ole seems to be handling it well.

Its disgusting, bitterness against a young lad with the world at his feet. When we get back into the stadium we need to show him the love.

That Bruno WhatApp story was a click bait article. Refers to his time at Sporting not here. Don't expect any less of our media, always targeting someone and trying to bring them down.

You can't blame the media for satisfying our fanbases thirst for player hate. It's an open goal for them

Do what sterling did call the media out for being racist or certainly targeting him more because hes black they'll soon change their tune. Rags like the sun dont deserve the time of day. I'm sure ole knows how to protect him, but I do miss Saf for these things, he made the dance to his merry tune. On a side note I blame Greenwoods current harassment by the media squarely on the shoulders of southgate for throwing him under the bus.

The media are a bunch of cnuts, but it's a learning curve for him. Inevitable learning curve being a young English star who may go on to being world-class. Sterling and Grealish had it too, Rooney had tons of it, etc.

He needs to just adapt to it, be wiser and not instigate anything from his side on the matter wherever he can.

Which made him public enemy no.1 for a few days after all the rags dished out on him. If you remember, he deactivated his twitter and Instagram for a few days. It clearly affected him. Now, he has lost the life of a close friend (as above in the Instagram post which he liked).

Maybe he does need psychiatry. Maybe he doesn’t. I don’t think any of us are qualified to speak on that — but the one thing that is clear is that Greenwood is dealing with a bit more than just “banging some birds”.

Well said. I didn't know he had lost a friend to suicide. I lost my only son at 19 through suicide.( breakup with girlfriend). Some of his friends also took it badly.

 at that thread.

I deplore it when fans abuse opposition players, their own players, managers, refs etc. However, and I’ve maintained this consistently, abusing, yes, abusing, most journalists is fine. They attempt to genuinely end careers and derail seasons. They have to face the consequences. Obviously no one should go out of their way to do it as that would be cruel, but I just cannot feel sorry for these guys when they get bullied online.

:( Condolences mate. RIP to your beloved son.

Yeah, about time the media stopped this Greenwood witch hunt. It can have serious consequences.

Im sure the club and Ole are doing their best to guide Mason
I just hope he is surrounding himself with good people...
He's so talented and his potential is (no bull) very high! world class high!
Ultimately its up to him at the end of the day.
Everyone is different.

Thank you very much. He will never be forgotten. I went through a rough time, and was just giving up, but had to try for my 3 daughters and grandchildren. I can actually talk about him now, but couldn't for a long time.

Yep. I totally understand that Southgate had to take a stand against Foden and Greenwood's behaviour, but just booting them out of the squad was totally wrong considering their age, maturity and relative inexperience to the whole 'fame' thing. I thought Southgate was better than that, to be honest.

The fact he's been left out of the squad this time is a blessing and hopefully affords him the time needed to get his head in a positive place and spend some time in the security of his home / the training ground.

I agree with most of what people are saying. Although I would question how journalists at The Athletic have such in depth information. Their sources clearly work at the club, so why is this being leaked if it isn’t intentional. Mitten for example, definitely gets information from coaches and players. I do wonder whether it was initially done as a wake up call for him, and now it’s gone over the top.

Mostly this is nonsense and is going way over the top, but there is undoubtedly a little truth to the idea that he's been enjoying himself a bit too much lately. Too many well placed sources have alluded to it. I think it's good for him to be out of the squad for a while. Get him away from it all and let the bloodthirsty press move on to somebody else.
