The MMA thread

You would've thought Strickland would've game planned to defend the obvious early Khamzat takedown attempt.

I think I have that fifth round for Strickland, just about, although I can see them doing the ol not conclusive enough to change the title so stick with the champion

Right decision. Though split decision shows how close it was.

Good show of respect there at the end. Not that I particularly like either of these guys

Has there been much more of a dislikable fighter in the UFC than Khamzat? Disliked many over the years but there’s just nothing likeable about him. Sadly see the result tomorrow night only going one way.
Colby was worse

Agreed. 1 went to Khamzat, 2 to Strickland and from there, it was just a matter of significant strikes, which Strickland won quite comfortably, even though a vast majority of them were defensive jabs.

It just shows how they fake all the animosity to sell the fight. Strickland basically just admitted it in his interview. 2 unlikeable cnuts still.

Nah half of Colby is a made up WWE character tbh and you just have to take it for what it is, a ridiculously over the top character that he’s playing. That’s not the case with Khamzat.

I think Colby learned that from his mentor, Chael.

I kept saying that people are underestimating Strickland's wrestling and ability to get up. He made Khamzat spend more energy than himself in the R1. Only Burns and Usman gave Khamzat a run for his money on the ground and he quickly backed out from trying to wrestle/grapple with them.

Khamzat's cardio is one of the absolute worst I've seen from a championship caliber fighter.

Rogan was blaming Khamzat's performance on his massive weight cut. Not that I usually agree with Rogan, but there may be a bit of truth to that since Strickland didn't exactly deliver a dominant performance.

All he did was throw jabs.

Holy shit, did not stay up for it as I thought it was a forgone conclusion

Was Strickland amazing? Or Khamzat awful?

Somebody break it down for me

Khamzat came out strong and took round 1 with a takedown and ground control

Strickland somehow managed to thwart one of Khamzat's take down attempts in round two and wound up on top, scoring some good strikes on him to win the round.

Round three was mostly standup and Strickland seemed to win it.

Khamzat got a second wind in round 4 and got the better of Sean.

Round 5 was close as well, but ultimately Strickland's constant volume of jabs probably won the him the round and the fight.

To be honest, fighters with historically poor cardio will always have issues after cutting weight. He probably cut a fair amount but I don't believe what Roundtree is claiming, 20kg worth of weight.

Thanks. I’ll have to watch it in full as I just assumed Khamzat would ragdoll him ala driscus & Bobby.

Mad props to Sean. Adensanya (at the time) was a hell if a scalp, but this must go down as one of the biggest ufc upsets in recent memory

Always thought it was mental people assumed Khamzat now just had a good gas tank after the DPP fight. He barely needed to get out of second gear in that fight. Entirely unsurprising that he was gassed by round 2 especially after that weight cut.

That said I thought he might have edged it to honest, definitely seemed to edge the damage on the feet and landed a greater variety of shots with Sean mostly just marking him up with the jab and little else.

I keep saying this for months, DDP offered no resistance to Khamzat, he had 0 defensive wrestling. Khamzat spent less energy on 5 rounds against DDP than he did in 1 round against Strickland. Strickland has legit defensive wrestling.

Strickland’s takedown defence and gas tank won him that, Chimaev had no real answer to it. He took him down easy enough in round 1 but it was telling how hard he had to work to keep him there considering how little he did once he had control. He burned a lot of matches for nothing and then either didn’t have enough in the tank in rounds 2 and 3 to risk that again, or he inexplicably decided to try and stand and trade. Strickland just seems to be kryptonite to certain types of fighter.

By all accounts DDP is one of the few with a bigger engine, so makes sense he could smother him with a high tempo

Was a bit weird how gassed Chimaev looked in round 2, and he didn't look much bigger than Strickland for it to be the weight cut, maybe it's some lingering effects from those health issues he had a few years ago. Whatever the reason, once he couldn't push the action and ragdoll Sean like he wanted it became a typical Strickland fight with him sticking him with the jab and out pointing him, though it was close. Thought it was interesting to see Van and Strickland win against elite grapplers by jabbing their face off, disrupting their pressure so they couldn't back them against the fence and shoot, 2 competitive fights and matchups that I'm sure we'll see again in the future.

Must say, to me, Strickland looked a bit bigger than Khamzat inside the cage.

There definitely wasn't a huge difference in size and I see his brother has come out talking about how his body shut down during the cut and that he was preparing for a fight against Jiri at 205, I dunno, he was a big 170lb but he looks a natural middleweight to me.

For sure, he is a natural middleweight. Light heavyweight talks are crazy. For as good as his wrestling is, those guys are all large.

Hilarious stuff from them really. Khamzat has got to where he is from dominating fighters by taking them down and keeping them there, over powering them with strength. There’s absolutely no chance he’s doing that with most guys at 205, he would lose one of his biggest advantages and his other overall skills aren’t good enough to carry him.
