The MMA thread

Bit naive by Topuria to think he can walk him down and absorb shots from a fighter bigger and known for his power. Hos grappling is elite and I wonder why he didnt try that more often.

Oh wow, I'm about to eat some humble pie, i didn't think Gaethje could do it, especially after his Pimblet showing.

Props to Justin, though as nails. Hope he retires now, he's finally won the belt, would be a perfect crown to a worthy career.

Topuria overconfident, walked into Gaethje's stiff jab, no head movement at all. So many fighters kept saying that Justin hits like a truck. I was surprised he didn't use his low kick more.

He's got some serious cardio issues. I'm still up for seeing Arman vs Topuria. Arman doesn't get hit too much and has a large gas tank.

Also to add, that was potentially career altering damage Justin had dished out. Possible fractured orbital, broken nose, possible broken rib.

Justin lit him up with countless jabs early on, which threw him off his game imo. Then after Ilya gassed himself a bit in the 2nd, he never really recovered his energy in rounds 3 & 4. I was surprised they didn’t stop it after 3.

I went for an accumulator bet and was 6/6 for the results leading into the Ilia Vs Gaethje fight although I got the method of victory wrong for Nickal and Gane.

At least Gaethje winning made me feel a bit better about trying to be too greedy with result and method of victory.

Surprised Topuria didn’t keep going to the body. Did some real damage there.
Very difficult to get inside or close as Justins jabs were so powerful.

After the first minute Topuria should have adjusted his strategy, felt like he wanted to prove himself more than doing what works

He didn't respect Gaethje's power, as i said previously, a fight whom many other fighters described as the hardest hitting.

It's a bizarre gameplan to just eat what opponent is throwing at you. The moment he was unable to capitalize on that liver shot, failed 2 armbar attempts, it was all over.

Protect yourself at all times is said for a reason.

So happy Gaethje won. It makes the trash talk prior to the fight that much sweeter.

Some controversy between DC and Trump's son.

Eric Trump says screenshots showing an alleged conversation with UFC commentator Daniel Cormier, which appeared to show Trump asking whether any fights at the White House event would be rigged, were fabricated.

In a now-deleted post on X, Cormier shared a screenshot of an exchange where an account, claiming to belong to Trump, asked if any of the fighters on the card were injured and if any of the fights would be "rigged".

20 minute extended highlights of the main event on TNT YouTube for those of you (like me) who weren’t doing 5am on Monday morning

If Paddy wins his next fight I think they may go for Ilia Vs Paddy and Pereira Vs Hokit on the same card.

Both of those fights have a lot of backstory. Paddy and Ilia both losing to Gaethje makes it sellable whereas before yesterday I thought it would be a mismatch. Now there are at least some doubts on Ilia. Hokit and Pereira makes sense too. Hokit needs to prove he's ready for a title shot and Alex needs to prove he can live with the heavyweights.

Gaethje had worse odds than Carano fighting Rousey. That must have given him extra motivation

Also, TNT Sports is a joke, it stopped recording after the co-main so I had to watch the main event on a dodgy website.

If you were smart* :smirk: you woulda gone to the scheduled program in the tv guide and clicked on the next ones… and et voila, the fights are there despite it saying it is a different broadcast.

*I checked out of curiosity.

Yeah that is very correct

Was just thinking...

Eddie Alvarez: Champion

Justin Gaethje: Champion

Michael Chandler:

Dustin Poirier:

Back when Chandler was having these legendary bouts with Alvarez, I genuinely thought he was the more technical, superior fighter.

Poirier was one of the first to beat Gaethje in the UFC... both lost to Khabib but Justin didn't have to fight Islam...

If Chandler had joined the UFC younger or if Poirier had moved up to LW sooner than he did, you never know...luck sometimes play a big role in careers.

What's everyone's thoughts on McGregor Vs Holloway? It feels like it's not receiving a lot of hype at least from what I'm seeing online.

I struggle to see to many ways McGregor can win unless he gets a KO in the first round. He has been out too long, coming back from a brutal injury and a very unhealthy lifestyle. Max is also a very dangerous fighter.

Any predictions for the UFC card?

I'm going for Paddy to beat BSD. I'm not sure it will happen but hoping so because I think it would set up Paddy Vs Ilia.

Can't see anything but Holloway beating McGregor after the injury and long lay off.

Paddy vs Ilia would be fun just for the build up but the actual fight should be pretty straightforward for Topuria unless that beating from Gaethje has cratered his confidence.

I'll be surprised if Conor looks anything other than old and slow, the latter rounds could get ugly for him if he makes it that far as I think Max will toy with him once he tires.
