The New Official Republic of Ireland Football Thread

We're guaranteed to be at Euro 2028, no? At least we have that to look forward to...
Nope. None of the host teams are guaranteed but there is a safety net for two of them if they don't get there.

Said it for years when your keeper is your best player you are going to struggle.

But Christ we are truly awful.

One point is more than I expected out of this window. We’re absolutely awful everywhere on the pitch

The state of that. Played like they had been on the piss all week. No energy. No urgency.

Kelliher our best player or it was a hiding.

Even at the end, so many slow casual plays. Johnson with 2 useless plays and Ferguson and Idah casually walking back when a long ball is played in. No awareness.

Got what we deserved. Shocking.

Astonishingly bad. The coach has to go surely? A ludicrous appointment. If there's no outstanding candidate surely we should have an Irish manager.

That's true but the replacement has arguably been worse somehow.
We’re shit. We’re going to be shit for the foreseeable future. We have no midfield or wings at all and there’s no way to do well in international football without either of those positions. Even if we sack him, which we should, we’ll all hate the replacement too

Ireland need to be studied. Same syndrome that England have in terms of having pretty high standard players but never achieving anything, but obviously way further down the scale - where England can’t win shit with world class players, Ireland can’t even qualify with solid premier league and championship players.

Not only that, but some of the losses are mental. Do Armenia have a single player playing to even championship standard?
Championship football isn't that good though, as proven by player after player who fails at international level with us at Championship level.

Knight is a very good Championship player for example, but people are saying we have the worst midfield in Europe and he plays every game. Szmodics was top-class in the Championship and can't score a single goal at international level.

Not sure about that. I think it is a good level. I think the problem you have unlike us (Scotland) and Wales is that you don't have enough players playing at a high level to compensate for those lower quality players and balance them out.

A Championship side would beat Armenia though so that point is mute. You're just seemingly terribly coached.

I support Cape Verde now. Gwan Pico Lopes!
I was reading last week that a lot of the humpback whales in Irish waters migrate from Cape Verde, or vice versa, either way, that's good enough for me to declare my allegiance.

What happened to Ireland? They seem to be a decent team on paper and shouldn't be losing to the likes of Armenia. It seems like Ireland is one of the most underacheving nations in Europe. When was the last time that they even qualified for the major competition like the World Cup or the Euros?

I would like to see an Irish perspective on the dreadful situation of the Irish football and their national team. If anyone can explain this to me, that would be very helpful.

Good shout, I don't think it's been covered in the thread.

The FAI president labelled our own league a "difficult child". The end.

Lots of info here

I think it comes down to a lack of investment at grassroot level. We're woefully planned for the future while other countries have developed quality academy systems. We've over-relied on England to sign players and coach them young, which is happening less and less at a high level.

I'd genuinely prefer us to play only players from the League of Ireland, or I guess who've had some experience of it at least. At least we'd be able to have some pride in the team and we could rely on them to have pride in their performances, unlike these embarrassingly overpaid shysters.

We'd just get hammered grandad, it would wear thin very quickly.

It's happening less because of Brexit. Irish players can't move to the UK until they're 18. I actually think this may benefit us in the long run though, with a lot of very talented teenagers getting plenty of first team football in the LOI.

It was the use of the word shysters wasn't it? It's an excellent word and I stand by it.

Doesn't help that Collins, one of the best players, has been in terrible form for the national team also. Unfortunately Troy Parrott scored 10 in 7 games to start the season in Holland but got injured before it.

But yes, should be enough to beat Armenia. Could argue Shamrock Rovers , the best team in the Irish league, could get a result against Armenia given they beat the team that finished 5th in the Portuguese League last season, and finished well ahead of Noah (Armenian team where some of their players came from) in the Conference League last season. At least Rovers have proven time and again to be organised in big games. This Ireland team, not so much.

I’m sorry but championship level is about as good as most Portuguese teams. Those Armenian players are playing at league 2 or less level bar a couple outliers who are fringe players in the fecking Bundesliga or something

Yeah today wasn't about not competing at the top table. We lost to an inferior team again. Very disappointing.

This. 2 horrendous players who we don't use anyway. Long feckin throws. Constant aimless passes
Yep. We can’t maintain decent possession because of it; we can’t feed our forwards with good through balls; and our defence is always under more pressure because the opposition just play through it.

And until some quality centre midfielders emerge from the youth sides this is always going to be thee problem. We also don’t really have good quality wide players, so it’s not as if we can play around it.

Yeah I know, but to my original point Ireland have majorly disappointed for a long time now despite having a strong squad often with a few gems dotted in there. It makes no sense.

Josh Cullen holds his own in the prem. I think we have better players than they showed today.

The structural issues are real regarding the drop off in talent, but we should still be beating Armenia.

They just don’t play as a team / collective unit. Even if all players are dogshit, a coach should still be able to have them pulling in the same direction

This coach doesn’t appear to be the one.
