The New Official Republic of Ireland Football Thread

Just don't play the match.

I'm a bit disappointed in the reaction - just pushing the responsibility further up the chain. I'd have loved them to refuse to play and just take the consequences, backed by the government.

If the government get involved in football, FIFA / UEFA can suspend the national teams.

It's a mechanism they installed to allow them to get away with corruption.

I admit I don't know the intricacies of the laws and what constitutes involvement, but I meant something like the FAI refusing to play and then the government upping their budget for soccer in the country to counteract any money lost.

If that is involvement (which I suspect it is), then so be it.

Probably, a few years ago, the Spanish government were warned about suspensions if they got involved with the refereeing situation. UEFA warned England about EURO 2028 over the football regulator.

I can imagine if the government came out and voiced support for any decision to not play the game, this is what you'd get from UEFA or FIFA.

But then again a few months ago FIFA were trying to force clubs to break international sanctions and pay transfer fees to Russian clubs.

They're all corrupt, Infantino is the worst by far.

That's obviously not going to happen.

Irish fans shouldn't have to travel away for a home game because of what the Israeli government are doing.

No shit.

And if the FAI/Irish government are supposed to have the moral courage to ban the travelling Israeli fans then UEFA/FIFA should have the moral courage to ban Israel from all of their competitions. But none of the above is going to happen.

Yeah we know it won't happen, it should but it won't.

Almost guaranteed the spineless whimps in the FAI will get the sniff of a few extra quid by agreeing to move the game and will do it.

I wouldn't be overly surprised to find that Ireland being one of the hosts for the next Euros will be influencing any decisions here.

I fully expect that UEFA would punish any nations taking a stand.

I'm fairly sure there was an incident with Norway not so long ago.

Getting done by a fresh caf meme because I'm not on it enough these days.

The shame.
Ah sorry mate. I'm fully with you all. Think Ireland should decide not to play these games.

IIRC the Scotland FA were fined because we booed the Israel national anthem when we played them. Daft.

The Nations League can end up been an important competition in regards qualifying for the Euro’s . Why the feck wouldn’t we play the match?

Why is there pressure on Ireland to cancel? They've played a lot of teams in the last couple of years, is it because there's more of a resistance to what's happening in Ireland compared to other countries?

Ireland refuse to play and Uefa expel us from the nations league and probably take euro 28 host status from us too.

We won't win promotion in The Friendly Cup or co-host a tournament we'll fail to qualify for?

Big whoop.

Ireland has never hosted a major tournament before and we'd sacrifice it for a bunch of crusties in the Dáil who couldn't give a shite about Irish football outside of using it as a political weapon when it suits them.

Didn't know @moses works in the Dáil.

Nope , this is on UEFA / FIFA to sort out. Until they do we play our games as required.
Feck that. I wish Scotland refused to play them too. They shouldn't be in the European section in the first place and since they are we have to protest and fight where we can. Refusing to play them is the least nations should be doing.

Yes, to your second question. For obvious historical reasons.

EDIT: Historical reasons that haven’t gone away, I should probably clarify!

Russia never would have been banned if other countries didn't say they'd refuse to play them. The FAI are happy enough for their hands to be tied rather than forcing UEFA's.

We'd sacrifice it to stand with victims of genocide.

Way more important than Sweden v Slovakia at 'the Aviva'.

The narrative that has been spun about the Irish since the announcement of these games has been laughable..

Ireland are now somehow being painted as a racist dangerous country, even some absolute conor mcgregor loving ejits in Ireland (we know the type) jumping on the bandwagon and taking Israel's side saying the game shouldnt be held in dublin :nervous: (which is pure mental when you think about it)

The world has gone mad.. The people committing mass murder are the victims.. whilst if you oppose that kind of thing you are labelled the bad guy. Its like some kind of mad parallel universe where everything is the opposite of reality

I reckon the mad parallel universe you’re experiencing is social media. Best ignored. Full of absolute melts from all over the world, winding each other up. I would be extremely surprised if anyone but a tiny mental minority of Irish people have anything but sympathy for Palestine and would back the FAI/team if they refused to play these fixtures.
