I really like the show but tbh thought that episode was maybe the worst yet and particularly bad for a season opener.

I resisted this for a while but today thought - what the hell.... so many wasted months !

It’s more Star Trek than Star Trek. Some story lines are total rip offs but it’s fun and has some real depth to it. Only 5 eps in but so far so good!

Gave it a 2nd chance and it’s light fluffy fun but something has just happened that I can’t understand why they would do this even if Jessica Szhor is a decent option.

I was worried they might overdo it with the romance plots and drift into soap opera territory but the last few episodes have been absolutely outstanding. Identity is up there with some of the great Star Trek two-parters. Orville is very different (and much better in my opinion) from Discovery in many ways but maybe the most striking difference is how likeable and real all the characters are. Just a shame Alara is not part of it anymore. At least she got a fantastic farewell episode.

Good to know. I took a break after 4-5 episodes wanting to binge it after the season ends. Plus, it was a bit disappointing start of 2nd season.

Already quite a few voices talking really commendable about the rest of the season.

Really loved the latest episode Lasting Impressions as well. Powerful message and really clever and original use of the holodeck.

I really struggle with this show. I love Star Trek but there are so many weak episodes in this, way too much romance. Even Identity was a struggle and there were zero repercussions apparently.

Identity was great.

I feel like it lacks the depth of lore to star trek, but it's good craig.

Identity was great.
Was it though?

Starts with usual romance, followed by the reveal that they were all murderers (was pretty clear that was coming). But the real kicker with this episode is it shits on the whole concept of the alien race that I can't even remember, they are meant to be these badass warriors who want to destroy Earth and the union yet when Earths fleet is more or less wiped out they just turn around and leave? I mean we seriously expect they'd do that? Would the Kligons have turned and ran, the Cardassons? Of course not, they'd have destroyed the rest of the Earth fleet and attacked the planet.

Putting that absurdity aside, you then have Isacc coming back onto the crew despite having been responsible for killing many crew members and everyone is chill and happy. Zero repercussions for his actions. It was flat out dumb. The first episode was good setup and they ballsed up the rest imo.

It's why I don't really like this show, there's very little sense of character evolution. It's just an episode of the Simpsons over and over where nothing changes.

I don't agree.
Who knows how the krill would act or react to this new situation. They aren't the Klingons. They have their own code, and we know elements within their society were already pushing for peace. They have a common enemy now

As for Isaac returning to the crew... Yes that's weird. But I can get past it. There are strong lessons about forgiveness there and free will and faith.

It doesn't make much sense, but it's the best way to show the robot people they were wrong

But what we've been told about their race for 2 seasons is they're a savage people who hate Humans. Hence the reaction when they first see them in the shuttle craft. Their behaviour in the final 15mins doesn't fit with what we've been told throughout the show. It was lazy writing imo. That was the first time we've seen them actually be civil in the entire show and it just happened to coincide with the Union being at their most fragile point. Gotcha.

It was a classic eye roll moment for me.

I was worried that they would do exactly what you say. But it didn't bug me

So I finished watching every episode of both series over the past 2 months. It's such a confusing thing to review.

First of all, (based on Disc S1 alone), this is clearly the successor to the older Trek. You can tell that the writers are fans and did a lot to stay true to the show.
Secondly, the humour really doesn't work, and I skipped a lot of it. It's unnecessary and not that funny to have fart jokes in an otherwise serious sci-fi episode.
The intense focus on the romantic subplots is too much.
The crew is so typical Trek, in fact it seems a carbon copy of TNG (Data and Worf in particular). I liked a lot of the episodes.

But.
Almost every single moment, especially the better episodes, I was aware it's a copy.
Cyborgs invading the earth? TNG- Best of both worlds. Teaming up with the usual enemy to beat the new one? Voyager- Scorpion. Primitive civilisation worships the crew? TNG- Who watches the watchers. Crew becomes zoo exhibits for an advanced civilisation? The only episode of the animated series I ever watched did that! Crewmember falls in love with a holodeck character? Lt Barclay. Weird Moclan customs? Just like Worf's Klingon stuff interefers with the crew, though they did a good job refreshing those eps. Holodeck safeties go off and it threatens the ship? Too many to count. (Majority Rule? Done by Black Mirror).

In fact despite being better than Discovery this made me less optimistic about the chance of any real Trek reboot- what if it's all been done, what if there are no new ideas for that universe?

Edit - also, the Krill have a mixture of Klingon and Founder traits. I'm a little (pleasantly) surprised at the militant atheism (not just the religious Krill being evil, but even the episode where an oppressive religion forms around the crew), it's more open than anything on Trek.

It's back after over 3 years since Season 2 ended, and it's continued strongly from where it left off.

A new character also introduced who I think is a good addition to the cast.

Recently got into this. Wasn't totally sure after season 1 but it got better since then.

Bortus rules. The episode where he gets a porn addiction had me in stitches and the one where they get hooked on cigarettes also.

I'm really not feeling this season, I preferred it when they used a little humour, now it's just full on Star Trek.

This week's episode was a little better, but it was a blatant clone from other Star Trek stories.

There's still humour, it's just less on the nose than the first season. It's more Star Trek than Family Guy does Star Trek now, admittedly, but there's still plenty to laugh at.

I think that now Strange New Worlds is here and pretty good, Orville just comes across as a wannabe, rather than something slightly uniquely it's own.

It's still okay, just feel all the changes the show has had behind the scenes as no doubt influenced a lot re direction its taking.

Given that strange new worlds is the follower, I see it as the other way around - the Trek franchise trying to get back the fans (like myself) who weren't interested in the angsty, lazily made new Trek.

As for Orville, it definitely depends on tastes, but I'm enjoying it much more as an homage with some humour rather than a family guy style parody.

I'm not enjoying season 3 at all and the show is just getting stupider.

Ep 2 of S3 is just a crap horror movie and was as bad as Prometheus for moronic decisions by the crew. Oh let's just rock over to this weird space station without any protection from potential pathogens and then don't quarantine the infected admiral who's undergoing a molecular transformation. And then they all just run around the ship without protective suits on looking for Paul even they know these things can transform then by spitting at them ffs.

I'm officially finished with this show after the latest episode which is all about gender reassignment and pronouns and stuff like that.

It was sickening to watch and listen too, it made me feel sick to my stomach and I almost threw my remote through the TV.

fecking disgusting, Disney should be ashamed of themselves for even thinking about it. It should come with a warning at the start of the episode. Playing You'll Never Walk Alone is a fecking disgrace.

Come on, it was a classic Star Trek trope. While I wasn't overly keen on the episode myself it was very true to the source material.

I thought it was easily one of the best episodes yet, and again what Star Trek is all about

I like everything Seth MacFarlane's done but I'm not into Star Trek.

Would I like this show, do you think?

Yeah probably. The first two seasons are light entertainment, this third season is taking itself a bit too seriously on the whole in my opinion but I enjoy Star Treak

My wife and my friend’s partner, neither of whom are keen on Star Trek both enjoy it.

It's really come on this season, it all seems more "polished" and the stories are more hard hitting and well written.

Really enjoying S3 after a bit of a rocky start but the musical is the absolute worst thing about it. YAWN wasn't even the low point.
