The Overlap | Micky van de Ven: Spurs’ Season So Far, Ange vs Frank & Toughest Opponents | The Overlap Exclusive

I'd guess the opposite. They thought he would definitely stay so low balled after the original agreement. If they thought he was open was open to leaving they probably would've went in higher
Yep. They tried to take advantage of the fact that he was an academy player like Man Utd did with Neville.

The Emirates (stadium) is responsible for most of these fiascos. That said, Cole is a cnut.

Also, Neville was lucky being underpayed didn't ultimately matter as much as he at least had an extremely long career at the highest level in which to keep earning.

That's never a guarantee. When players sign a professional contract, they're one bad injury away from that one contract being the most they'll ever earn from football. I'm sure there are many other footballers out there who got burned by not making the most of the brief window they had to earn life-changing money.

The people out there who would be willing to let their employers take advantage of them during their short careers are exactly the people who need good agents.

Neville signed really long contracts at United. The one he signed in 2001 was for 6 years. He then got a pay rise for the same term in 2004, and after that he was on yearly renewals.

I think Neville was a bit unlucky in a way. Keane was the real benchmark setter for salaries around that time, and Neville's big renewal (when his value was at his highest) came a year before Keane basically doubles his salary. Then everyone else used that to calibrate themselves but he was tied into a long 6 year deal.

The Arsenal fan embodies everything about why I would hate them to win the title.
It's weird how they swap the Arsenal fans every episode while the United, City and Liverpool guys seem to have their own private locker in that studio.
No surprise they got this guy back, he's there to generate views and comments to rile other fanbases up.
For Rice to win the Ballon d'Or over the usual suspects we'd have to do the double and him to score 15+ goals in the league and CL. I don't think he can do a Rodri and get it "just" being the best midfielder in the league as i don't see England winning the WC.

I don't understand why Arsenal gets rotated so often. Liverpool makes sense because I think he's Carraghers mate and the United fan has a sponsorship deal with his podcast and Super 6 so probably some overlap there. City probably don't have many fans to choose from. I liked Laura that was on last time for Arsenal and Simon isn't too bad when he's on either. This guy is shite though.

Sometimes you get fans on here and you can just tell they're on twitter too much. Everything they say is the kind of thing that works well in a twitter echo chamber. This Arsenal fan has probably said 'Rice is revolutionary' alongside a video comp of Rice doing amazing things on the pitch on twitter before and gotten an insanely positive response.

 Too true.

Generally my issue too. Like the core 4/5 are there for like 90% of them or more, while they are all heavily content farming content creators trying to shitty jibes in for a tiktok short than actually having a decent open conversation anymore, it was genuinely good to see a different Chelsea fan who wasn't "hey we won the CL twice this millennium I'll have you know ha ha". The Sunderland girl was a nice new(?) addition and yet had that Newcastle fan in her face for the majority of her 5 minute window..... but they'll bring back the Newcastle fan because the suit got some clicks online.

What's the point in always having multiple Man Utd tops in there only for McKola to ever speak for the club - hell, what's the point of the third row and other section in general?

The Rice argument for Ballon d'Or pretty legit though... how many players are currently in the position that if they win the League, CL and World Cup would be the favourite for the Ballon d'Or!

I'm half way through and feel a bit sorry for him. Think he's spent more time talking about his dad than his own pretty impressive career.

Ah that was a great watch, must admit I had a tear listening to him and his daughter's story. I have a daughter myself and I can't even imagine the pain they went through, so glad she's ok now.

Can't remember why but I ended up Googling him a few weeks back and watched a couple of other interviews he's done. He always comes across like such a grounded, likeable guy.

I am today years old when I find out Jordi Cryuff plays for Man Utd. Goodness I didn't even know he exists.

Really good listen that episode

Jordi's United career is a really strange one. He won the league in his first season, and that was the only trophy he won at United. He was in the squad during 1999, scored an important equaliser at Derby, then went on loan to Celta Vigo, so he never won the treble. The next season, he came back into the team, scored another important goal against Wimbledon at home, then disappeared again. He came back into the team later on in the season, scored against Wimbledon again, and a winner against Watford, but didn't get a medal because he hadn't played 10 games.

Probably the best guest so far. Great topics and very articulate.
Seems very analytical and self aware, as well as articulate. Although it can open doors, it also must be hard in a way growing up under the shadow of such a great figure. But he seems to have turned out remarkably balanced.

It was obvious how stubborn Ange was but it's quite funny hearing how desperate the players were to win that they had to beg him to play slightly differently just to win. Also puts bed to all that stuff about 'Ange could play a different way' as it was the players who had to force him to play differently to win.
