The Overlap | Mike Dean: Refereeing Concerns, Big Manager Battles & That Aguero Goal! | The Overlap Fan Debate

Vidić is a national treasure in Serbia. Few United fans know this but Vidić was trying to become a president of Serbian FA but the "elections" were rigged against him and he was dubiously "defeated" by the current Serbian FA president.

Serbia's football association is notoriously corrupt and it's run by the ruling political party (SNS) and the organized criminals. Vidić was trying to reform Serbian football and uproot the corruption but the forces against him were too strong.

This guy is a total legend, and as a Serbian Vidić makes me so proud to be my compatriot. The British people and Utd fans have no idea how bad the situation is in Serbian football and how hard was Vidić trying to fix the general problems and corruption in Serbia's FA and Serbian football.
I didn't know this but I'm not surprised. He's a legend and legends try to do legendary things. One of my favourite United players.

Watched a bit of it.

He's very bright, pretty boring. I always think people in such positions of power at a club end up being fairly boring to listen to because they will inherently be quite guarded.

I thought the evolution of the Forest fan in part 1 was funny. He was the new sweet and shy dude when he started doing these. Flash forward and give them a bit of "success" and he turns into a big twot taunting and laughing at the Palace guy angry about the EL qualification.

Rory's point of Forest giving Palace their place because of sporting merit would obviously never happen in today's world and its financial implications but it cost nothing to show some respect to Palace fans about their situation.

Don't know if it's just me being miserable but could do without all the shit attempts at "banter" in these fan discussion episodes.

Can barely go 10 seconds of discussion without someone interrupting with a shit joke that falls flat and ruins the conversation.

You're right, it's frustrating sometimes, especially if you're trying to hear about a club that doesn't get a lot of airtime usually.

Because their audience (football fans in general) are just as thick as they are for the most part.

Him and Berba were trying to do the same thing, in their national football federations. However, in the Balkans, politics has its fingers on everything, football too. At the end, Berba also did not manage to become the FA President in Bulgaria. I just don't know if it was in the same manner as Vidic.

There is no doubt in my mind that they would've been able to improve things across the board, with the connections they have.

In regards to the interview, I can't believe Gary was left shocked that Vidic is the only defender who has won POTY award twice, I thought he knew this information. To this day, there is not a player who has won it 3 times. There are only 4 more players that has won it twice, Ronaldo, Henry, De Bruyne and Salah. That's just mental stat.

The majority of Serbian football fans wanted Vida to become the president of the Serbian FA but sadly there was nothing he could do about it. Serbian president Vučić and the leader of the Red Star Belgrade Zvezdan Terzić are the ones who are pulling the strings and they wouldn't let Vida become the president of Serbia's FA. They held rigged "elections" where Terzić's puppet Dzajić was appointed as Serbia's FA's president.

Vidić had huge plans to tackle corruption in Serbian football and he was supposed to hire the best and most qualified people to run our FA but the football mafia won in the end. Berbatov had the same plans in Bulgaria as well but he didn't manage to do it as well. The Bulgarian football is even in bigger crisis than Serbian football. Their national team has been shambolic for years now and their league is even worse. Serbia is still producing a lot of great footballers whereas Bulgaria really isn't.

The situation of our Serbian FA reflects the political situation in Serbia. Corruption is widespread, the rigged "elections" are completely normal here and that's why there have been huge student protests against the Serbian government for almost a year. Vidić also supported the student protestors and that's why he's hated by the rulling SNS regime. Pozdrav iz Srbije.

Chelsea can challenge, but I think this is a season too early. Think we need a better keeper and, maybe, a dominant centre half.

I really dont think you can. Everyone was being very optimistic but that prediction seemed the most over the top.
Palmer, Enzo and Caicedo would get into the top 3's teams or at least be in the mix, everyone else in there is pretty run of the mill or weak. You've made lots of signings again but i dont think any of them move the needle for you. Favourites for top 4 sounds about right, i'd be surprised if thats at all close to the top.
Same with the manager. He looks alright but he's not going to outperform guardiola or be a difference maker (at least not a positive one).

Of course you can say we are not challenge for any thing. Same is said about psg game and their manager Enrique and maresca can't out play psg team or his tactics. But he did we did. We are on the up.

We might lack consistency in the league this season despite we were the initial challengers to Liverpool last season till December with inferior team.

For me we will challenge for all top prizes this season without a doubt. We upgraded squad in strikers, wingers and midfield as well. Brought a good backup to cucurella as well. So will see.

Didn't watch it, have no opinion on it. I'm sure you'll outplay and beat some good teams this season, thats not a title challenge. Just like you weren't challenging Liverpool last season at any point.

Of course no team challenged Liverpool last season. Only team came close to Liverpool within 2 points was Chelsea. It's not challenging indeed.

This season we believe we will close the gap and will challenge for title.

Newcastle fan wasn’t too bad to be fair.
I dunno, if you watch the whole thing he takes a few pot shots later on saying stuff about how Newcastle don't need players who'd rather fight relegation at United than play in Europe for the Toon, or some shit like that. Also has a little rant about how United ruin young players and Eddie Howe is amazing at developing them.

They're all fecking bellends on that show, to be honest

Agreed.
I dont believe it'lll be different this season. Maybe liverpool take a while to adjust to the changes and you stay close to them but you'd need City and Arsenal to struggle too. Because all 3 are flat out better than you at the moment.

You're forgetting that Cucurella and Reece James are comfortably the best full back duo in the league. Obviously that all depends on James staying injury free but when he's playing we have formidable full backs, a world class midfield pairing and Cole Palmer. If Joao Pedro and Estevao come good then that's a dangerous team. Colwill's ACL does really dampen expectations though because I can't see Fofana lasting the entire season injury free.

I'd say thats pretty generous. If Reece James could stay fit i'd throw him in with Caicedo and Palmer but he cant so ... Cucurella is a decent player, Joao Pedro is a decent player. You need more to keep pace with the teams ahead of you.
Go through the teams ahead of you, they're basically filled with Caicedo / Palmer tier players. You just trade out a bunch of Villa tier players for more Villa tier players most seasons. Which is absolutely enough to cause some upsets in a cup against anyone but not for a league campaign.

Agreed to your assumption that we are not strengthening enough and couldn't challenge teams above us. Your perspective will change once season starts.

You will see where we strengthened and our overall squad depth without compromising the quality of play. Our season will surprise many.

I dont think chelsea can surprise me. Being much the same as last season would be the most surprising thing you could do. I'm making assumptions, im probably as familiar with your transfer and squad as City's current one. With their record I assume they've spent enough and will pick up good players whereas i think you're throwing shit at a wall and maybe some might stick

I know we had a horrid season and all - but is too 6 really that big of an ‘outlandish punt’? The predictions that we are going to finish top half of the table, 9th or 10th bothers me. Scoring goals was a huge issue last season and we’ve improved on that. Really hope we can prove everyone wrong this season, especially as we have 1 game a week.

I think you haven't proven that yet.On paper the new front three should be more potent but until they do it in competitive PL games for United it's a possibility not a certainty.
United finishing in the top 6 is not really a hot take for me because i think even if your new guys don't 100% click together, you'll have enough to bridge the gap. But i would definitely not be shocked to see you only finish 8th or 9th with no midfield and a clown in goal.

Not really. We went from 12th to 6th to 4th.

United are lining up with a brand new attack and you're seemingly not done adding more players. I would argue last season (similar to our 12th place finish) was an aberration. Morale was low, there was nothing to play for really other than pride and you very clearly shifted focus away from the league to the EL and things in the league just spiralled from there. I think with the exact same squad, with 0 changes but with a renewed focus and a full preseason with Amorim, United could potentially finish 6th. But you've added Sesko, Mbeumo and Cunha.

So yeah, I think United 6th is a fair enough prediction.

I often think about the quality of information I used to digest until I found the caf.. all the way from transfer gossip and fake news to online debates with other football fans..
I find it astonishing that personalities like Mckola are even invited and allowed to be on set bringing their daft opinions on the screen..

So Raya was not good enough for United, but the Lord of the butterfingers Onana went unnoticed in terms of flaws?

After last night, not really what you want to hear.
