Susegaad!
So the pile up has already started against Michael Carrick and the frickin style of football. All 19 other managers have style whilst United are playing on vibes .

Can we please add clips in one thread and laugh at them all.

My gem from today involves the GOAT CF Troy Deeney

If our style/system is obvious do you care to explain it in brief?

He’s spot on!
Is he? How?

4-2-4 out of possession.

Looking for the right moments to press when the opponent is vulnerable in order to win the ball high up the pitch and force mistakes, was evident in pre season and against Ipswich.

Beating a press with short passes in our half to then get the ball to Bruno or the wide players in space.

The style varies on the personal, if Amad is playing who is able to consistently beat his full back we would play differently, same as if its Mainoo who is again, able to either carry the ball or get out of a tight situation with his quick feet as opposed to playing with Santos or Mbuemo in their respective positions.

Interchanging between the front players, which is again something we’ve seen in pre season with Mbuemo and Lacey or Mbuemo and Bruno against Ipswich.
Hull was just a really bad day in the office and Ipswich were more proactive than Hull were, which made it easier for us.
We’ll have to find ways to do better against ultra low blocks.

It’s really not all that different than the football we played under SAF, just less long balls from the CB’s or the GK and obviously with inverted wingers (Dorgu aside).
The second half was vintage SAF United at OT.

Now, what is Alonso’s style of play, other than 3-4-3 and having his front 3 in great form to start the season.
Any comments on how open and easy they are to play through? The gaps between the CB’s and the wing backs? The lack of control and possession?

Not saying Alonso doesn’t have a style, he is an excellent coach, but its really just lazy nonsense by a goofy ex lump of a footballer turned podcaster for engagement.

Our style these days is pretty much just the mid point of modern football. It's just not skewed strongly in any given direction. A bit of situational pressing, mid-block if the press isn't on, some transitions when the situation arrives, longer spells of possession the rest of the time. That doesn't mean we don't have an identity around how we play.

Troy Deeney

Maybe he is brilliantly encapsulating the dilemma that some other managers will face, that they won't be able to identify and easily summarise Carrick's style and figure out how to play against it

That would sound good to me

The "what is our style of football?" complaint in regard to Carrick is odd.

His style of play at Boro was controlled possession on the ball, passive mid-block off the ball, focus on combination play through the middle. And that's more or less what we've increasingly seen here too. So it seems pretty evident he has a preferred style. One the midfield we've built this summer leans into.

The questions about Carrick are moreso whether that approach is the best one in the context of the league, whether it places limitations on how good we can be, and (fundamentally) whether it is coached well enough to succeed at this level.

But then this is Troy Deeney, so I'm not surprised to see him raise the wrong points of criticism.

Vibes and wot’s the system only ever applies to United.
Van gaal had a clear system, awful but you knew what he was doing. It was funny, on Monday night football they showed Chelsea's lowest posseikn game sin pl history, 2 of the top ones were v us under van gaal, and we couldn't do anything with all that possession

Ah, we are trying to get to the "style of play" stage in the United manager lifecycle already. Really doubt the likes of Deeney actually watch our games, though it won't stop them coming forward with nonsense opinions for clicks.

Is he saying that Alonso planned to have 30% of possession at home to Brighton, and that will be their way of playing going forward to lead them to success? Because there is no way that he would be saying the same thing if it was a United team that put in the same performance.

I think we should continue to have a perceived 'no style of play' ( though we clearly do) so we can continue to blow the fragile minds of Troy Deeney and the like.

If Troy Deeney thinks it’s wrong then it’s a sign we are on the right path with Carrick…

If our style/system is obvious do you care to explain it in brief?
It’s easy. Play quick fire passes through the middle with multiple people timing their runs forward. Make the pitch small on one side to do rondos while the opposite side wingers keep the width. Play forward to force the opposition into defensive actions over keeping the ball pointlessly.

Remember when Ole kept beating Pep’s City and KDB came out with the “we have no idea what system they play” cope?

You'd need to be quoting someone with a few more brain cells than Troy Deeney before it became a topic worth discussing.

Yeah Deeney is an idiot but doesn't mean he can't stumble on a point.

Out of your descriptions I'd argue only mid block and an interchanging attack (which i'd challenge) are systems or styles the rest is just objectives. Pass into space, press when a press is good, do whatever an individual player is good at isn't a system it's basics.

I'd argue Carrick has a very basic ethos of mid block, Bruno stay up top, and be overly conservative in possession. The players are seemingly deciding the rest themselves which is why it all looks so disjointed and slow. If Carrick is going to win anything with us he needs to do more than that eventually.

That sounds lovely but it's happened in one or two games.

It happened many times in the second half of last season. City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, Forest, Villa, etc. The only two games it didn't work were Leeds (that's because Mainoo wasn't playing) and West Ham. I'd argue the reason it didn't work against Hull was because our new players (esp Telemens) don't understand how to play that way yet.

In what way are we overly conservative in possession? We constantly look to play forwards and play risky passes. The reason we look disjointed when it doesn't work is precisely because of this. It relies on swift attacks where multiple players are running forward and passing with timing, and when the timing is off it seems disjointed. Just like in possession based teams when the timings are off it just seems like boring LvG style possession for possession sake.

Deeney:lol: Sacked from his only managerial job less than a month in after no wins in 6.

Pretty sure Carrick won’t be losing any sleep.

Two things here. If Carrick was an established manager in the PL and was not English/British, Deeney would not be saying this. We obviously have a style and it’s clear to see, it’s just not sophisticated for his liking.

We’ve been fooled into thinking set systems and strict tactical philosophies are a must. We saw the folly in that with Amorim. Obviously the likes of Arteta, Maresca, RDZ, Alonso have obvious tactical and positional setups that can be great if they work out but having it doesn’t guarantee anything.

The other end of that is playing according to the strength of your players and creating a basic structure and building from there and that’s what Carrick does. What’s the point of playing a high line when he has Martinez and Maguire in the team or playing horizontal risk free passes with Bruno.

I personally don’t see the Ole comparisons with him except when the team loses its way and gets desperate. We saw in preseason what his plan for the team looks like. Now that he has a proper set of midfielders it will only become clearer.

Great post

To be fair English punditry is a car crash. Terrible but you can’t take your eyes off it all.
Can. Turn off every time one of these cnuts rear their stupid head. GN, Keane, Scholes rarely have anything of value to say. Better insights on here between the hysteria/fm crew…. and that’s not even taking into account the usual abus
