After about 100 hours across a month and a half I've finally finished CrossCode, DLC included. Despite some frustrations along the road, I consider this game nothing short of a masterpiece. Easily one of the greatest indie games I've ever played, and quite possibly the best top-down action-rpg in general. The closest comparison I could think of is something like Ys Origin, which I enjoyed but doesn't have nearly as much depth as CrossCode.
There's so much going on in this game, so for the sake of brevity let's just say I thought the world design, lore, narrative, characters, combat, enemy design, itemisation, and puzzle design are all excellent. Every system has an enormous amount of depth, giving the player full control over whatever playstyle they prefer. NG+ also deserves a mention. I only briefly dabbled with it but there's a wealth of options to customise your run, and many of the them significantly change the way characters react to the protagonist, often in hilarious ways. I wasn't really planning on another playthrough but now I'm curious to see how far they took it.
There are a couple of missteps along the way, like the pacing, especially when it comes to the length of dungeons and the amount of puzzles in them, and some difficulty balancing issues, with frustrating difficulty spikes here and there. Some puzzles and bosses are a bit too obtuse. None of these flaws significantly impact my feelings on the game, but they might sour the experience for others. All in all, a phenomenal game that I would recommend to anyone with a passing interest in action-rpgs. As a bonus, for those with PS Plus, this was one of the monthly games on the lowest tier this month (a few weeks after I started playing, you're welcome).
To round out this post, a couple more games I've recently finished.
- Life is Strange True Colors: loved this one. I hated the second LiS but fortunately this felt like a return to form. A fantastic cast of characters, great protagonist, intriguing story with a central mystery and just lovely, cosy vibes all-round. I wish there was more of it.
- Lake: a resounding meh. I'd heard good things about it but the central loop of delivering mail is hampered by clunky animations and controls, while most characters are forgettable and poorly written. I don't get the praise at all. Skip.
