From what I’ve checked it seems it’s only going to be for that weekend which is a shame.Yes please.
Still getting to see it on the big screen will be incredible.

“The Gautama Bhudda advises me to Walk Away from Illness. But he wasn't attached to a drip..”
Blue
An almost entirely blue screen for 80 minutes as Nigel Terry narrates Derek Jarman hospital diary.

At first the blue screen(A homage to the artist Yves Klein)might seem gimmicky or simply acting as a cover for an audiobook but it’s essential. The solid colour becomes inseparable from the images that come into your mind from the deeply personal narration.
The simplicity of the work creates an immersive quality as the blues start to shift and move and the tint from the screen acts as a void(Another homage to Klein)to Jarman memories.

Blue also represents the high peak of Channel 4 as a broadcaster. To not only put out what is an openly gay film 5 years after Section 28 but one which also challenges the expectations of what a movie can be.
Truly impressive to think some households throughout the UK on one Friday night were captured by the blue void.

I always suspected the color blue was gay.Blue

I saw it very late 80s or early 90s at the GFT. It works as well as you imagine. From what I’ve checked it seems it’s only going to be for that weekend which is a shame.

Nice one. Thanks. I did have some tickets years back but covid hit so finally getting the chance now. It’s up there with the original Blade Runner for me.I saw it very late 80s or early 90s at the GFT. It works as well as you imagine.
Still his best film imo.Memories of Murder (2003)
Wish I’d seen this years ago, Bong Joon Ho’s second film about investigating murders in Korea in the 80s. If you like David Fincher movies then this one is for you.

That writer saw a lot of things in Sinners that I certainly didn’t see, and in establishing a larger Coogler Cinematic Universe I think he’s reaching beyond the material into wish-casting. What do you think?Long but good article on Sinners -

Sinners has received more Oscar nods than any film, ever.
The book is worth a read? Even if I see the film first.Project Hail Mary
I had reservations about Gosling, and I had reservations about how faithful they'd be to the book. In my opinion, they got it bang on. It was a fantastic, entertaining experience. Humour, high drama, tears... it has the lot. Thoroughly enjoyed it and have no hesitation in recommending it.
Having read the book, I know that it takes quite a few days for Grace to gather his strength and find his way around the ship: that's all condensed into a few scenes. Similarly, the whole figuring out the language barriers and the scientific discovery bits are very much shorter. But it doesn't detract from the momentum of the movie and, in reality, probably benefits it.
A double thumbs up, and a fist my bump from me.

Yeah, the book is a great read. The book is worth a read? Even if I see the film first.
Need a new book for an upcoming holiday.
Cool. I’ll get it, thanks.Yeah, the book is a great read.
I thought it was such a fecking average film. So weird to see all this love-in for it.That’s way too long for my addled attention span. Especially when it’s all about a not particularly interesting film. This fact blew my mind though:
Mental.
I think the article is correct on Sinners cultural essentialism. Contrasting the two main musical scenes -What do you think?
4/10 is generous. It had some creative imagery but ended up being a turgid music video. I like Refn and loved Drive, like you.The Neon Demon (2016)
I've long had Drive as one of my absolute favorite movies, but had never gotten around to watching some of Winding Refn's later pictures partly because they are well-known to have mixed reviews from fans and critics (at best). Nevertheless, I decided to give The Neon Demon the chance, as it seemed to have been better received than Only God Forgives. In short, I would say it is a movie that could have been really good, but sadly isn't. What does work is the overall idea and themes. The concept of a surreal horror movie centered around the LA modelling world, and the themes of beauty, envy and obsession is quite original and had a lot of potential. That along with the cinematography and score makes the movie at least somewhat interesting. It just can't make up for the slow pace, clunky dialogue and underwritten characters. Also, some scenes lean far too heavily into the exploitative.
Probably a 4/10 for me.
I feel there’s a Rohrschach ink blot test quality to this film, people seeing things that may or may not be there based on their own speed settings. I was told this very day that I don’t get the themes in this film because I am not a person of color. So, that could be, you could be right, I could be right, or a mixture of all options presented thus far (i.e., some of it was good, some of it didn’t work).I think the article is correct on Sinners cultural essentialism. Contrasting the two main musical scenes -
I Lied To You is oddly racial segregated as firstly the Asian couple don’t seem to interact or even notice the black musicians who are conjured up from the past and future. It’s if Coogla is showing their race means they are unable to have connect with music such as blue, rock, hi hop, etc.
Secondly Coogla attempt to show the lineage of music is so simplistic that it’s essentialist. If anything it reminded me of those dog shit right wing meme videos(Which are now usual posted by the social media accounts of the White House) that try to connect things like Roman Empire, Vikings, Cathedrals and the movie Brave Heart to some Western world view.
Where as the Rocky Road To Dublin has no boundaries and available to all. The real danger of the vampires seem to be they represent a form of universalism/breaking away from cultural essentialism.
None of this is deliberate by Coogler as I’ve listening to interviews and he’s like most directors. The film was a way for him to put out ideas/concepts out which he finds interesting.
I did think it had something to say about how youth and beauty is commodified and how the industry is shallow and exploitative. And it has a few somewhat clever foreshadowing moments, such as when they ask the main character if she is sex or food, and she ends up being eaten after rejecting the make-up girl.. Some of the performances were decent too. But ultimately it was just too ponderous, and the side-story with the motel owner made little sense.4/10 is generous. It did also give us this banger. Gets another point for that.
I don't really know if I even like Refn that much. I love Drive and the Pusher movies are quite good, but I didn't really like Bronson or this. So it's a bit hit and miss.
His movies play better with the sound off. Not joking. That’s not even a criticism. Maybe if you could just play the music and mute the dialogue, that would be ideal. He’s a funny dude. Apparently they fought him tooth and nail to do things in Drive that he didn’t want to shoot, which made it more “commercial” and thus more popular. One thing I was told was that in the opening sequence there were to be no exterior shots; everything was to be shot inside the car looking out, for example.I don't really know if I even like Refn that much. You should see the scene with this track. Quite good.Never seen the film but that is indeed a banger.
Not sure I follow. The soundtrack and sound editing are both huge parts of what makes Drive work so well. His movies play better with the sound off. Not joking.
I updated my comment. Basically the dialogue isn’t all that important. You should see the scene with this track. Quite good.

True. Gosling barely speaks in Drive.I updated my comment. Basically the dialogue isn’t all that important.
There's a hundred-thousand streets in this city. You don't need to know the route. You give me a time and a place, I give you a five minute window. Anything happens in that five minutes and I'm yours. No matter what. Anything happens a minute either side of that and you're on your own. Do you understand?True. Gosling barely speaks in Drive.

Damn, that's been on my to watch list for a years, but never got round to it. Sounds like it's universally regarded as turgid in here. The Neon Demon (2016)

Give it a watch and make your own judgement. It’s not totally without merit.Damn, that's been on my to watch list for a years, but never got round to it. Sounds like it's universally regarded as turgid in here.
Is it though?I loved the Neon Demon and I love Refn in general although he is polarizing because of his pacing and style. To be blunt, most people I know here in Los Angeles that hate Neon Demon, like some really shite films so I don't trust most people that diss on the movie. It's not his peak, which is Too Old to Die Young, but it's definitely a good film, just not the kind that will appeal to everyone.
