First time?
Possibly. I sometimes have a hard time remembering if I watched a movie 15-20 years ago. Especially one like The Godfather where you know all the references and many of the key scenes/lines from other sources. It's so engrained into popular culture. But yes, quite likely it's the first time I've sat down to watch it from start to finish.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Wasn't really looking forward to this but it was actually really good! Good call to make it all "street level" and focus on a personal character journey about shouldering burden rather than an intergalactic threat. Tom Holland is much better in this than The Odyssey. Always nice to see Bernthal in a funny role and he's The Punisher, one of my favourites! The acting overall was ok except Zendaya, who felt really wooden. My main issue was the length. I think the movie jumps between different plot threads too much and they could have easily shaved down 30 minutes. But it was still an enjoyable film 7.5/10

Husbands in Action. A South Korean action comedy. A women and child are kidnapped and her detective ex-husband and veterinarian current-husband must save her. The plot is more complex that that, but the buddy thing is the point. Quite a few loose ends to the story, but it's a really enjoyable ride with some truly hilarious scenes, and some quite creative jokes as well. (The car chase is great, especially.) 3/5

Dark Web: Cicada 3301 (2021)
Action-comedy about a person trying to solve the infamous Cicada puzzles that appeared on 4chan in 2012, purported to be a recruiting mechanism for an Illuminati-type group. The people who solve the puzzles disappear. This movie is a fairly accurate account of the first Cicada puzzles, which required cryptography, coding, art history, steganography, Morse code, and other skill sets to solve.
The comedy bits were weird and I guess they were aiming for a National Treasure vibe, but they should have just done this as a straight thriller. Alan Ritchson (aka Reacher) not only plays a minor role he also wrote and directed it. Sometime after this movie he started juicing because he is about 30 pounds lighter here.
They didn’t “solve” the mystery of who Cicada is, or why they exist. At one point they talk about the deaths of his companions (it’s framed as a court hearing) but they didn’t die. So…? They wait to almost the very end and then threw in some topless women. His fastidious bow-tie wearing friend is coding gay, they use him to flirt with a male librarian, then suddenly he’s Joe Hetero and hooks up with some random woman outside a Cicada party. Felt like a bunch of reshoots happened and the ending was botched. And what is the super-secret Cicada group doing hosting a rave with cocaine and hookers in the first place? Why solve all the Cicada puzzles when you can simply get hired as catering crew for the Cicada rave?
Not terrible. Problems are tone and story. Should have skipped the comedy. A post credit scene is so bad it’s like finding a pube in your last bite of a sandwich. Dropped 20 points for that scene alone.

11 Rebels (2024)
1868 Japan is in the midst of the last samurai war. The sword is being replaced by long guns. A group of 10 criminals are ordered to hold a fort and fight off an advancing army in exchange for their freedom. Who is the titular 11th ? Cue mysterious music. They realize it’s a suicide mission but trust their lords won’t burn them. Sort of like 7 Samurai but with less story. Some good sword combat, a few moments that were a little arch, a couple weak or crudely drawn characters out of a 70s samurai movie. Mostly fun action during its 121 minutes with occasional gore.

If you liked that then GF2 is a must. I actually prefer it slightly but others don't. Either way it is a brilliant film. Al Pacino is outstanding.

Silent Hill
Rose Da Silva takes her adopted daughter, Sharon, to the town of Silent Hill in an attempt to cure her of her ailment. After a violent car crash, Sharon disappears and Rose begins a horrific journey to get her back. When I watched this on release, I remember enjoying it. 20 or so years later, it's still okay but I can now see the many problems it has. Whilst the cinematography is still ambitious, the production design is great and the overall tone does well to match that of the games... The writing/dialogue, acting and characterisation is absolutely awful. I can't remember a movie where the protagonist is as stupid as the one here. With that said, the creatures still look excellent and there's a really eerie atmosphere in this film. Maybe knock a point down if you're not a fan of the game but I am so I'm giving it 6.5/10
Silent Hill: Revelation
When her adoptive father disappears, Sharon Da Silva is drawn into a strange and terrifying alternate reality that holds answers to the horrific nightmares that have plagued her since childhood. What an abomination. Has all the acting/writing issues from the first one (multiplied by 10) but this one also looks shit and feels very cheap. Weird seeing Sean Bean and John Snow in this, which would have been before GOT. Absolute shite with zero scares or anything interesting at all happening beyond one decent scene 2.5/10

When a man receives a mysterious letter from his lost love, he is drawn to Silent Hill, a once familiar town now consumed by darkness. Holy shit, I didn't think it could get worse than the previous one. I don't understand how they've got the director of the original back, who if nothing else, is a really good visual director, yet this movies looks like it was entirely shot on greenscreen. Every sing shot, even just the main character sitting in a park, looks CG. Every looks like a cheap PS2 game. And the narrative is nonsense, which is bizarre as the second game in the series (which this is based on) has one of the greatest videogame narratives of all time. Utter crock of dog shit 1.5/10

Yep that's the one. True it's not erotic for the viewer but the central theme of the film is sex and desire.

Oh yeah, that was amazing. And the guy who refused to run and yelled COWARDS!!! dying took me completely by surprise.
Kidding aside, having Maximus be the father of Lucius thus apparently having cheated on his loving wife which he spent his entire life avenging seems very in character for him.

I don't really get why Zendaya is big though. It's reqlly just that one expression.
Oh and Jon Bernthal is just Frank Castle and Shane Walsh here, but I love him so who cares.

The Godfather Part II (1974)
Also a very good movie. Al Pacino is just ace in both this one and the first, but I feel like he has more to do in this one and gets to show more of his range. He's the highlight of the movie for sure. They could have made it just Michael's story and it would have worked fine, but the juxtaposition to Vito's origin and their different ways of operating takes it to another level, of course. Unfortunately I also think it pushes the runtime into the extreme. 9.5/10.
I guess I would say I prefer the first to this one. The story of Michael's reluctant rise to power and the smaller scale conflict is better, in my opinion, and it is a tighter narrative. The first one also has more memorable scenes off the top of my head - Vito's introduction, Michael protecting Vito in the hospital, the restaurant murder scene, the baptism sequence in the end. And of course it has Brando's performance as well as Pacino's. I think De Niro does a quite convincing job as a young Vito, but it doesn't have that same aura (and maybe it's not supposed to).

Yeah, I agree with that. It's a high-quality movie and all that, but it doesn't quite click for me. The young Vito stuff doesn't have much narrative power (it's just a rise-and-rise story), and the Michael part repeats too many ideas from the first film. Narratively, I much prefer Godfather 1.
The Cuba section in part 2 is the best part of the trilogy.
I heard about this recently, such a shame.
I know Fredo is meant to be a buffoon and not the brightest, but it still almost felt a little bit unbelievable that he reveals his relationship to Johnny Ola just a few hours after carefully lying about it. It could have been done in a more subtle way.
Other than that it was great. The collapse of the government alongside the collapse of the family.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Strange Creepy atmosphere added to by the bizarre dialogue and line delivery. Naff ending though and not something I'd watch again but Keoghan and Farrell are great in it

The Fredo arch is a strange one. I can understand the character reasoning and resentment but does require him to be very dumb.
A lot of gangsters/mob film have the habit of almost celebrating it yet Coppola makes very apparent they are absolutely villains.
Will you watch part 3 ?
Definitely, and probably soon as well, so I have the first two relatively fresh in my memory. Thankfully the run-time is a bit more forgiving, but you still need a full evening to watch them. No matter how engaging it is, pushing a movie well beyond three hours is a bit of a risk.
Everywhere you look, people say Part III doesn't really maintain the same quality, but of course you'd want to know how Michael's story ends.

A family of four is suddenly sealed inside their house with no way out and must work together to survive against both their dwindling resources and the mysterious, looming threat that is keeping them trapped.
it was a decent watch, started a bit slow.
I went in knowing nothing about it and maybe that the way to do it.
There is defiantly questions that need answering, will they be answered , who knows.
Worth a watch, there is some decent acting.
