Top 8 Value For Money?
After tonight’s results the top 8 is confirmed for the season. Some slight movement can occur between 3rd-7th but as things stand these are the best performers this season.

Having noticed the recent draft order I realised something to brag about (insufferable I know) that Cardiff City have to be the best value for performance club in the league this season.

So without further a do here’s a mini analysis of the top 8 clubs of the season and why plucky little Cardiff are punching well above their weight.

Club/Points/Squad Value/Value Above Cardiff

  1. Manchester United/93/£614m/+£298m
  2. Newcastle United/83/£481.5m/+£165.6m
  3. Everton/70/£535.5m/+£219.5m
  4. Southend/67/£462.5m/+£146.5m
  5. Leyton Orient/67/£475.6m/+£159.6m
  6. Aston Villa/63/£427.9m/+£111.9m
  7. Cardiff/63/£316m
  8. Nottingham Forest/56/£425.8m/+£109.8m
A quick glance at the top 8 shows just how dwarfed Cardiff are by those teams above and below them financially, yet only a 7 point difference separates them from 3rd place.

For comparison here are the squad values of the clubs closest to Cardiff’s and their positions in the league:

Club/Points/Position/Squad Value/Value Above Cardiff
  1. Southampton/44/11th/£342.7/+£26.7m
  2. Kidderminster Harriers/59(D2)/28th/£337.5m/+£21.5m
  3. Bournemouth/39/17th/£334.1m/+£18.1m
  4. Fulham/45/10th/£330.9m/+£14.9m
  5. Sunderland/43/13th/£306.7m/-£9.3m
  6. Arsenal/44/12th/£291m/-£25m
Clubs around Cardiff’s value rarely finish above 10th. It will be very challenging for Fulham (the best positioned in 10th) to move ahead of 9th placed Barnsley with a 4 point gap and 2 games remaining.
So we can see that relative to value it appears Cardiff are significantly overperforming so let’s look at just how much by.

Club/£Millions per Point (1dp)
  1. Cardiff/£5mpp
  2. Newcastle United/£5.8mpp
  3. Arsenal/£6.6mpp
  4. Manchester United/£6.6mpp
  5. Aston Villa/£6.8mpp
  6. Southend/£6.9mpp
  7. Sunderland/£7.1mpp
  8. Leyton Orient/£7.1mpp
  9. Fulham/£7.4mpp
  10. Nottingham Forest/£7.6mpp
  11. Southampton/£7.8mpp
  12. Bournemouth/£8.6mpp
Note:Kidderminster excluded due to D2 points (£5.7mpp if interested)

The above shows that Cardiff are the best value side in the league with Newcastle £0.8mpp worse off as their nearest competitor. So it looks like if you want a manager capable of extracting everything out of his squad there’s only one Benito.
Solid effort Beni. Makes me feel a bit better over the fact I cannot start a season without a rake of losses that I still pulled off a decent season.

I think you’ve done tremendously well this season. While squad value isn’t a perfect measure of strength, it shows that some like yourself are doing more with a lot less.

Damien’s United are of course an outstanding and superbly built side, but when you look at their value and quality they should be dominating as they do.

So here’s to the plucky underdogs trying to fight with the devil.

I think that is a bit dismissive of half of my team being built with patience, nurturing from a young age/low rating.

My first XI

Oblak (93)

Trent (94) Van Dijk (95) Stones (93) Alaba (93)
Rice (93) Pedri (92)
Frimpong (92)
Bellingham (95) N. Williams (92)
Mbappe (96)

Ratings when I purchased

Oblak (95)

Trent (92) Van Dijk (96) Stones (90) Alaba (93)
Rice (90)
Pedri (87)
Frimpong (70) Bellingham (78) N. Williams (73)
Mbappe (75)

Back five were established already but I've stuck with the front four since 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2016. Some managers would lose patience and exchange at least one of the players before they reached their peak. Heck, I've got an example of that in my team – John Stones. Originally I signed him when he was 75 rated in 2013. Kept him for seven years then sold when he was 91 rated but likely to go down. Re-signed him a few months after that.

Newcastle are doing immense, and have been for a while. Think for me at the moment Southend United is the most impressive rise with the amount of youth players they've kept and still play regularly. Top scouting, and they're fourth despite not having Gold all season.

Top 8 Wage Comparions
It’s a widely accepted theory in real world football that wages are correlated to performance. So here’s our current top 8 and their wage ranking.

Club/League Position/Wages (nearest £100,000)/Wages Above Cardiff
  1. Everton/3/£3.0m/+£1.4m
  2. Manchester United/1/£2.6m/+£1m
  3. Newcastle United/2/£2.5m/+£0.9m
  4. Nottingham Forest/8/£2.3m/+£0.7m
  5. Aston Villa/6/£2.1m/+£0.5m
  6. Leyton Orient/5/£2.0m/+£0.4m
  7. Southend/4/£1.8m/+£0.2m
  8. Cardiff/7/£1.6m
Now if we rank by Points per £million wage:

Club/Points/Wages (nearest £100,000)/Points per £Million wage (1dp)
  1. Cardiff/63/£1.6m/39.4
  2. Southend/67/£1.8m/37.2
  3. Manchester United/93/£2.6m/35.8
  4. Leyton Orient/67/£2.0m/33.5
  5. Newcastle United/83/£2.5m/33.2
  6. Aston Villa/63/£2.1m/30.0
  7. Nottingham Forest/56/£2.3m/24.3
  8. Everton/70/£3.0m/23.3
So it’s official. Cardiff are the best ran club from a value for money perspective.

Not at all dismissive I even say “superbly built side” which is acknowledging the hard work you’ve put in to make them so dominant.

The players I’d say while bought young weren’t exactly gambles are Pedri, Mbappe and Bellingham. Williams and Frimpong weren’t as obviously rated amongst popular scouting circles but you’d find it nigh impossible to find someone who didn’t rate the other 3 at the time of you purchasing.

Southend are probably my favourite side and have been for some time for exactly the reason you outline. But they aren’t the best value for money side and of course have had longer to build that side up (it’s still bloody impressive but also true).

I’m being very tongue in cheek here, but statistically Cardiff are the best value for money club.

For comparison to you Damien:

Current Best XI
Chevalier 90
Pavard 91 Rudiger 94 Tomori 91 Mittelstadt 90
Barella 94 Modric 93
Kubo 91 Veerman 90 Son 93
Isak 92

Bought at Best XI
Chevalier 89
Pavard 91 Rudiger 91* Tomori 73 Mittelstadt 90
Barella 94 Modric 93
Kubo 91 Veerman 90 Son 93
Isak 92
I’m not the best scout, but I’m an active and fair (sometimes too fair) trader and don’t mind losing youth talents to upgrade.

Also worth noting there are plenty of players I’ve put day 1 bids in for having scouted them extensively that I’ve lost out to others due to the random nature of transfers when more than one bid is the same that have gone on to be 90+ players.

Unfortunately I just don’t seem to win them. I can’t remember the last time I won a bid for a player everyone was in for. Unlike the likes of Villa for example who won several key ones (Wirtz, Yamal etc)

I don't think wages are the best indicator as they go up but never go down. e.g. Oblak is on the wages of a 95 rated player (£189k) but he's 93 rated which is (£131k)

I agree on the luck of bidding wars. Villa had a great run, you've had a decent run when they changed the AI thing though we have to see how they turn out as that happened recently.

Oh I know, wages aren’t the best in SM terms, but it roughly shows what a side is capable of doing and shows what they can cope with financially.

I hit £2.0m wages per week this season with Ronaldo, Muller etc and it would have put me in negative balance by the end of the season.

So while it’s not perfect if you’re able to spend £1m+ more in wages you’re able to build a squad of 90+ players.

I tried to do that with Muller, Ronaldo, Diaby, Milinkovic Savic, Tsygankov, Mkhitaryan etc. If Cardiff could afford the wages I could push for top 4 most seasons and have the odd title challenge season.

Instead I’ve sold the following for cash only this season to try and afford having a mega squad:
  • Brazhko £6.9m
  • Pizarro £3.2m
  • Veliz £8.0m
  • Lukovic £2.6m
  • Olabarietta £2.7m
  • Peck £2.5m
  • Traore £4.4m
  • Jashari £3.0m
  • Luighi £0.7m
  • Palhinha £17.3m
  • Milinkovic £16.5m
  • Muller £6.0m
  • Ronaldo £5.0m
  • Tsygankov £14.5m
  • Neuer £8.0m
  • Mkhitaryan £2.0m
  • Diaby £35m
  • Mastoras £0.7m
That has to happen for me to be able to compete and stay afloat (have a healthy balance now to be fair)

You planning another squad review ? @BenitoSTARR
Start of new season. Yes. Will probably take a week to do the ~30 sides.

Plan is to do:
  1. Top 5
  2. 6-10
  3. 11-15
  4. 16+ 3 promoted sides
  5. 3 relegated and 2 next highest Division 2
  6. Next 5 Division 2
  7. Lower league sides

Looking forward to it. By the time you've done it they might have finished reviewing Serie A

Don’t hold your breath.

Lewis Ferguson to 91 is overdue from last season. I’ll take 90 at this point.

That stupid thread on the caf ruined my plans of buying him for Martial's price (£310k) for good luck. I had put a bid in before that thread went up but had to remove it and put in a fresh one just in case someone came in late as he ended up trending on soccerwiki for a bit. Hadn't really heard of him before the weekend but decided to sign him because of his name. He's unlikely to play much at Monaco before the end of the season due to his contract running out - with the injuries they have he was naturally named on the bench due to little other option. But should hopefully be a decent option for the future.

When I signed Martial, he was in Lyon's youth ranks and still very much unknown. Took a couple of years before he went to Monaco and started playing but his rise has been rapid since. Something similar for Mbappe would be pretty good, though keeping my expectations low for now.
Mbappe signed
Lost £120k over the past week. To remedy this, the club are taking the following steps:
  • loaning Kurt Zouma out to West Ham United (reduction of £18k/week paid by Manchester United per week)
  • selling Aboubacar Sylla when his transfer ban is lifted on the 6th April. This would see the club reduce wages by £7k/week along with having over £100k from his transfer fee.
  • selling Kylian Mbappe to Hereford from the 14th April with a buyback clause inserted. Benefits both clubs as he'd instantly become Hereford's best player and benefits Manchester United due to short term wage reduction along with the cash generated from the sale. Has been agreed between the two clubs that should Hereford's manager decide to leave or United's manager decide to enact the buyback clause, that he'd return to United.
The following players are available on loan to any interested clubs:
  • Karim Rekik (21/86 D(LC))
  • Santi 'Barry Allen' Mina (20/86 AM,F(RLC))
  • Mouez Hassen (21/85 GK)
  • Georges-Kevin N'Koudou (21/85 AM,F(RL))
  • Richairo Zivkovic (19/83 AM(R),F(RC))
  • Mikel Merino (19/82 M,AM(C))
  • Charly Musonda (19/78 AM(RLC))
Mbuyback
hmmmmmmmmm.

I've not had the time to do the youth table for months and I apologise for that. What I have done is a bit of a twist/celebration of the youth players at teams who have made significant contributions this season.

Below is a table that shows all the youth players signed (<=80) that have had at least 20 SM league appearances for their club this season.

8: Southend United
7: Fulham
6: Leyton Orient, Nottingham Forest
5: Hereford, Tottenham Hotspur
4: Aston Villa, Barnsley, Manchester United, Middlesbrough
3: Everton, Sunderland
2: Arsenal, Newcastle United, Southampton
1: Cardiff City, Wolverhampton Wanderers
0: Bournemouth, Milton Keynes Dons

Not bad

I haven't signed a player in years

Should I get gold and start playing again

Yeesh my luck with youth players is abysmal. Merino's the only one who made it out of those and he went... to Newcastle as part of the deal for Berge. Christ, Conor always has my pants down with deals.
I may remind you about Isco... You sold me Isco for Konate, and Kovacic there might have been a 3rd in there but i cant remember. You also got Oblak for DDG and cash...

That larger deal with Berge, Rice, Reyna and Pedri heading your way was a gamble for both, at the time much less for you as it was clear Rice was leaving West Ham, Pedri had been Barcelonas golden boy for the season and had yet to get injured, Reyna was on fire and looked to be Puli mark2, oh and Berge was smashing it at Burnley and was being linked to top prem teams...

Meanwhile I went for a united linked Vini, a chelsea bound Kova, Konate who was not a regular for Leipzeig yet, KT who had just moved to Arsenal and Brahim Diaz who sort of got lost for a while and couldnt make his mark so (yet again) i sold him too soon.

That really was a mega deal... Had completely forgotten about Diaz till just now...

I also bought Christensen off you shortly after he dropped before he moved to Barce...
