Growing Pains - A Cardiff Case Study
I’ve analysed the Cardiff City squad based on rating changes since signing with the club. It’s something now I’ve manually inputted data points I should be able to continue in a few months after more review periods to visualise the data over increasing time periods.

Of course we could look further back at player careers to their initial ratings - but you can see that on Soccerwiki for yourself (and I might do the odd player deep dive using this we’ll see) but I wanted a way of tracking how players I signed (and kept/brought back) rose over time.

So here we go…

Goalkeepers

IMG-3591.png

Goalkeeper is always a position I find hard to predict but Owusu-Oduru and Chevalier are both already objectively good investments. Owusu-Oduro has an impressive +0.67 rating change per month and +11 overall since investing and Chevalier is +0.24 a month and +2 overall which when approaching 90+ ratings is an incredible rate for a GK.

Both have room to grow higher at their clubs and Owusu-Oduro looks primed for a summer move.

Centre Backs

IMG-3590.png

The longest serving member Fikayo Tomori has an impressive +0.15 growth per month since signing with Cardiff in 2016. His is a nice visualisation of how players gain ratings in bunches when performance levels rise (and personally I think he’s good enough to still be 91).

Zabarnyi’s early rises emphasise how unique he was in Ukrainian football, the fact Mykhavko has taken a similar curve is very encouraging.

Fullbacks

IMG-3592.png

The “flat backs” as Im affectionately dubbing them just don’t look like risers. Mittelstadt should be 91 by now and Kayode and Ahanor are absolutely due bigger rises very shortly so we’ll see how this looks in 2/3 months time. Pavard has been wonderfully consistent (and unlucky to not hit 92 in his title winning seasons).

Central Midfielders

IMG-3593.png

Lavia’s growth is pretty impressive. He’s someone without injuries that would be 90 by now (he’s superb on the ball).

Bouaddi is looking like a rocket of a riser, so I look forward to end of season he should be 88+.

Noah Nartey and Chema Andres are two due the biggest rise in the next few months (Chema is the best DM in Europe for duels and progressive passing combined of any age currently) so I look forward to seeing their development.

Attacking Midfielders

IMG-3594.png

Isaque is growing at a terrific rate and will continue to do so at Shakthar as he’s getting games and influencing matches so I can see him reasonably keeping at least a +0.5/month growth rate as really he should be 80 by now based on minutes.

Dro, like all Barca prospects, is growing rapidly and could well hit ~82 soon with a few more minutes in the champions league.

Wingers

IMG-3602.png

Yan Diomande is going to break the growth rate record here by a mile soon but is already on +0.72/month. I expect him to go straight to 85/6 very soon as he is the best winger in world football U21 not named Yamal (maybe Estevao is close but can’t match his dribbling). End of season if he’s not 87/88 minimum I’ll be stunned. If he’s not 90 rated by 21 I’ll be absolutely shocked. Ridiculous player.

Semenyo has been done dirty with no 90 rating in the summer but it’s guaranteed now maybe a cheeky +2 straight to 91 this January…

Bardghji, Addai, Fatawu, Clement Bischoff, Robinho Jr and Amoako Jr are all due some rises so I expect some movement here very soon.

Strikers

IMG-3599.png

Kostoulas and Mheuka stand out here but long term I think Endrick will dominate growth. Mheuka was bought for £30,000 though so he’ll absolutely be my best bargain by as he’s comfortably 92+ potential at striker.

Dju has a good growth rate and I can’t see him not moving really soon and rocketing up to high 80s in a bigger league.

All of them look like growers long term (apart from Dovbyk).

Overall Squad Summary

IMG-3603.png

You can clearly see the aggressive change in investment from around mid to late 2024 and I think the graph shows the upward trajectory of the squad overall. Only Tomori, Zabarnyi and Lavia have lasted longer term at the club and I can see Zabarnyi being 91/2 end of season, Tomori 91 and Lavia… hopefully not injured!

Great work Benito. You did a drastic rebuild but looks like it'll pay off. Disagree with Dro hitting around 82 soon. Bernal had around 250 minutes when he hit 80 while Dro is on 100 minutes. Like you say if he plays more in the Champions League it'll help (and the reviewers have a fondness for attackers) but I'd guess he'll go to 78ish

@The Stain is now the third most successful manager in SM Caf league history after winning three trophies this season: Champions Cup, League Cup and Super Cup. Next season he could easily go level with MG as he has both the Charity Shield and Super Cup to contend in.

NEW RULE UPDATE: Player Concern Work Arounds (incl Buy Backs)

Absolutely no buy back options on players with concerns as a means to remove the concern or beat the system. This is an extension of the existing GK swap ban and clearly something we are all against so I’m not bothering putting this to a 2/3 vote. No matter the method or reason in which this is attempted. Any such instance in future will result in bans and the player being sold to external with the offending club banned from participating in any bidding war for the player.

@Damien please update the OP when convenient. No sense forcing a vote on this one it’s clear the entire GW wants this loophole closed shut.

Final Ruling on Dutza and Doue:

  1. Transfer ban from today until the end of the new season (except to return Doue ASAP 27th December 2025 so concerns can mount up).
  2. Mingueza stays at Middlesbrough.
  3. Wolves cannot play Doue in any fixtures and cannot be part of any matchday squad.
  4. Doue cannot be played until L3 concerns are reached at Middlesbrough. If he even so much as makes an appearance on the bench during this time he must be sold immediately to external.

Done, thanks for taking care of this & everything else along with greeny. Punishment for Doue situation was also taken with my consultation and I 100% back what was decided. Really sorry for the chaos that has been caused. I'll be doing the FFP update by the end of the week and other than that I won't be around much for the rest of the year so hope everyone has a good Christmas and New Year.

As promised, keeping in those who left/aren't at original club. Bernal's injury ruined any chance I had. De Cat would have been a better choice in hindsight if I had him when this started.

Edit: Phew, I signed De Cat 6 months after entries for this closed.

So annoyed by Lavia’s injuries he’s a 90 quality midfielder when fit, but doesn’t stay fit enough to get the minutes needed to reflect his ability.

As promised, keeping in those who left/aren't at original club. Bernal's injury ruined any chance I had. De Cat would have been a better choice in hindsight if I had him when this started.

Edit: Phew, I signed De Cat 6 months after entries for this closed.
Does this mean I have two entries?

Addai should rise soon with Como to at least 83 so he’ll be getting closer very shortly.

When are we doing the next one because I’ve got a solid gold option about to arrive.

Gold ended and can't sign players, don't really want to pay again, it seems they are taking money and not actually doing anything with it. Will see how it goes but I'll probably quit at some point.

Squad depths plus last season's performances on the left (average XI is just top 10 outfield plus goalkeeper so not 100% accurate):

Boro's hiring spree last season paying off. They're favourites to win the title this season for sure.

That's fair enough, thanks for playing. Give it a few months and see what the next blog update or two brings. The last one was about squad caps which is useless to our game world as we manage them individually for each team rather than a general cap.

Season 35 Division 1 Squad Analysis and Preview (A WORK IN PROGRESS)

Season 35 is mere days away and we’re still in the midst of an unprecedented early top 5 leagues mini review. That means transfers, risers, fallers and desperation as managers look to gain every advantage ahead of the new season.
So once again we bring back a brief pre-season preview of the big boys and newly promoted sides that find themselves in the top flight.

Manchester United (Division 1 Champions)

Oblak 93
Trent 94 Kounde 92 VVD 95 Alaba 91
Rice 94 Pedri 94
Frimpong 92 Bellingham 95 N.Williams 92
Mbappe 96 ⭐
13 points clear last season and a +1 to Rice means you’ll struggle to match this quality anytime soon.

If I had to pick a flaw it would absolutely be the wingers and centre back as Williams has committed to Bilbao, Frimpong hasn’t had the best starts at Liverpool and Van Dijk probably needs to drop to 94 now.

The midfield trio is arguably the best in the world (maybe only Vitinha arguably here?) and Mbappe is of course the best forward in the game so it’ll take a Herculean effort for anyone to beat them anytime soon.

Predicted finish: Champions

Middlesbrough (Runners Up)

Neuer 93
Molina 91 Rüdiger 94 Pacho 92 Dimarco 92
Barella 94 Ruiz 92
Palmer 93 De Brunye 94 Gakpo 92
Salah 96 ⭐
Immense depth, incredible youth coming through at all ages, this is the only side in the league capable of challenging United now and in the future. They took my advice and invested in quality and it shows in the spine so much more.

The flaw for me is CF still. They had the chance to get Isak, but didn’t quite meet the expectations, and while Salah is a huge signing it’s obviously a short term gain and I don’t see anyone in the squad capable of hitting 95+ at CF when he inevitably drops.

I think they probably have the best youth mix (19-23 year olds) of the game world across positions so I can’t see a significant issue in the squad longer term (even despite the transfer ban) so for me it’s a case of when, not if, Middlesbrough win the league.

Predicted Finish: 2nd (title challengers)

Southend United (3rd)

Donnaruma 92
Timber 91 Upamecano 92 Bastoni 94 Robinson 90
Valverde 94 Bentacur 91
Dembele 95 ⭐️ Havertz 92 Davies 92*
Nuñez 91
A terrific season finish but I’m officially worried about Southend’s attack. Dembele is world class but Nuñez is a dropper and it’ll be some time before their wingers mature into 90+ unless Quenda can displace the Chelsea options (unlikely in my view).

They of course have excellent talents (Greenie is a superb spotter) but it feels like Middlesbrough have been the more aggressive recruiter and I think have taken the mantle of best youth.

Defensively though they are the masters. Top talent at good ages will help them stay high up.

Predicted Finish: 3rd

Aston Villa (4th)

Ter Stegen 93
Livramento 89 Maguire 90 Torres 91 Hernandez 91
Gavi 91 Parejo 91
Yamal 94 Foden 93 Wirtz 94
Kane 96 ⭐
A really solid season from Aston Villa which I put down to them acquiring Ter Stegen.

The attacking talent is comfortably the best in the GW for me and so it’s only still defence and midfield where they are lacking. Yamal is capable of very high ratings (97) as is Kane (97) and Wirtz (96?). Id also back Foden to be able to get 94 again in the future. So here there aren’t issues. If anything too much depth might cause concerns with Rashford, Greenwood (scum) and others probably not getting a look in.

I definitely think they could sacrifice one of these for a midfielder or CB of better quality and then they’d have a serious chance at competing.

But until that midfield and defence is improved it’ll be top 4 challengers and nothing more.

Predicted Finish: Top 4 contenders

Leyton Orient (5th)

Martinez 93
White 92 Tapsoba 91 Gvardiol 93 Robertson 92
Vitinha 94 ⭐️ Llorente 91
Coman 91 Nkunku 91 Doku 90
Messi 94
A super season from the Orient and the addition of Lionel Messi proved to be a stroke of genius.

Defensively they have some of the best prospects around in Gvardiol, Yoro, Huijsen and Balde so already that’s a potentially world class back line that perhaps I’ve slept a little on.

Midfield has a very promising future with Vitinha and Pavlovic likely to be the main two for the future so the only area I’m not as confident in is the AM spot. Probably needs looking at so could some defensive players be used to secure a better talent here?

The attack is a worry in the long term. I think Doku should take over a wing position with ease as he’s looked superb recently but Bakayoko is being rotated with Nusa at Leipzig due to the explosion of Yan Diomande, so I think the hopes rest more on Kroupi and Fofana now.

Predicted Finish: Top 4 challengers

Nottingham Forest (6th)

Sommer 92
Porro 91 Marquinhos 94 Militão 93 Estupiñán 90
Caicedo 93 Camavinga 92
Sane 92 Álvarez 93 Adeyemi 90
Lewandowski 95 ⭐
A much better finish and season for Forest but drops to their attack might see them suffer soon. Sane and Chiesa dropped by 1 a piece meaning the wide attack is lacking potency and with Sane at Galatasary there is no hope of holding 92 long term.

Lewandowski has all but confirmed this to be his last season at Barcelona so they are going to have a headache in attack soon most likely it would be shift Uzun to CAM and Alvarez to ST long term.

Predicted Finish: Europa places

Everton (7th)

Alisson 95
Bellanova 90 Dias 94 Milenkovic 90 Olivera 90
Rodri 96 ⭐️ Kimmich 94
Gordon 91 Silva 93 Diaz 92
Oyarzabal 92
Everton’s final position is no surprise after losing Messi. He’s irreplaceable.

That said the squad is in a better shape overall since we last reviewed so I don’t expect them to struggle this season in any way.

Long term my concern would still be the age of their midfielders and of course the future of Alisson who can’t keep his 95 any more and when he drops I expect a bigger fall down the table. It feels like their title challenger days are over.

Predicted finish: In Europe

Fulham (8th)

Costa 91
Wieffer 89 90 Pavlović 88 Hernández 92 Dalot 90
Ugarte 90 Koke 91
Neto 91 Musiala 94 ⭐️ Akliouche 90
Pedro 90
Wow! What a season Fulham have had. I was (fairly I might add) critical of the starting XI last season but boy did they pull it out of the bag with a top 8 finish and it’s something they should be immensely proud of.

I still think defence is in an awful state so it does need fixing but Vinny has confidence in some of his options coming good so fingers crossed for him there. My main issue would be that it’s usually unsustainable to secure good finishes with a sub 90 defensive line and 3 players have to be played out of position currently (Wieffer and Dalot) for it to function so I’ll be pleasantly surprised if they do this a second year running.

Midfield is a weird one as there are a few players who maybe could hit 90 at some point but they’ve just not quite shown it in real life or they’ve made moves that harm their chances. Rovella and Kokcu should get there at some point.

Their strength however lies further up the field, Musiala, Neto and Pedro are excellent to good options for most sides and Akliouche hitting 90 has given them a solid front 4.

Predicted Finish: Bottom half but safe.

Hereford FC (9th)

Raya 92
Gomez 90 Kim 92 Cubarsi 90 Darmian 90
Thuram 90 Gallagher 90
Olise 93 Kulusevski 92 Sabitzer 90*
Haaland 96 ⭐
I think Hereford could do a bit more in the next year and have potential to develop into title challengers along with Middlesbrough and a handful of others.

Olise is world class and performing statistically above Yamal at the moment so 94 for me is a guarantee this season maybe more as I think he’s absolutely stunning. With this in mind I think the future is very bright for them. Olise 94/5, Haaland 96/7 and Cubarsi bound to rise 91/2 so the starting XI should get better. I also expect Madueke to hit 90 soon (I really rate him).

Gomez and Darmian are weak spots but Kerkez is in the building and there are some decent younger prospects about too. Should be ok long term.

Where I think they are more desperate is central midfield but they have got some lovely prospects in Junyent and Froholdt who are capable of 90+ ratings so a bit of patience and in a year or two this could be a scarily good side.

Predicted Finish: Top 6

Newcastle United (10th)

Courtois 95
Carvajal 92 Konate 93 Christensen 90 Cucurella 91
Kovacic 92 Merino 92
Gnabry 91 Odegaard 93 Vini Jr 96 ⭐
Morata 91
A very disappointing season for Newcastle but it feels like a blip more than a downward trend.

Defensively Carvajal can’t go on much longer and Konate is having a stinker of a season at Liverpool (so much so Real Madrid are no longer interested in him on a free?!) but Cucurella has been superb for Chelsea. I really like Nathan Collins and think he’s underrated for his value on the ball to Brentford (statistically one of the best CBs in the PL last season). Kambwala and Tape are good option in their youth here.

Midfield Stiller is the stand out but lacks the physicality of the PL so I’d expect him to stay in Germany for a while longer. I think they’ll be ok for another year or two but it’s the area I’d want to improve most.

Right wing and CF are big issues, Cunha is a talented player but is really more of a 10, so maybe longer term Odegaard drops deeper to CM and Cunha takes the 10? But I don’t see a prospect in the team that can take over from Gnabry (who I think is going to decline sharply in the next 2 years) so wingers need to arrive.

Predicted Finish: Top 8

Barnsley (11th)

Atubolu 88
Szoboszlai 92 Guehi 91 Gimenez 91 Martinez 91
Goretzka 91 Grealish 91
Griezmann 94 ⭐️ Simons 91 Martinelli 91
Benzema 91

Barnsley are talking full advantage of the versatility of their players but it means every position (except GK) is fielding a 91 rated player with plenty of 90 and 89 rated deputies available.

Not dissuaded by older players they always finish well, the game doesn’t care about any numbers other than rating so it’s a solid strategy that should see them safe again but I am worried about the GK. If they get into trouble it will be due to the lack of 90+ there.

A little peep into their youth and others shows there are also some quality options coming through so it’ll be interesting to see how many stop gaps come through in the mean time.

West Ham United (12th)

Marmardashvili 91
Cambiaso 90 Tah 92 Laporte 91 Cardona 90
Tchouameni 93 ⭐️ Anguissa 91
Mbeumo 91 Eze 91 Torres 90
Watkins 92

Let’s get to it. It’s a solid side but it lacks star quality (as do many might I add) and that’s my worry. I really highly rate Mbeumo but his move to United makes it so difficult to rise much beyond 91 (name any player not called Fernandes who has risen to 93+ at United in the last 5/6 years?). Eze and Torres have rises in them so 92 for both is possible and I do like Igor Thiago but only up to 91 at some point.

Tchouameni is excellent but I can’t see him going to 94 soon and I wonder if the sides PL bias is going to go against them. It’s really hard to buy the best PL players before they breakout to 93+ ratings and it seems like that’s where West Ham focus their attention. They need to take more gambles in other leagues.

Predicted Finish: Safe but bottom half

Cardiff City (13th)

Chevalier 91
Pavard 91 Tomori 90 Zabarnyi 90 Mittelstadt 90
Modric 92 ⭐️ Reijnders 92
Kubo 91 Paqueta 90 Baena 91
Dovbyk 91

Awkward to review my own side but here we go. I think we’re going to be close to relegation this season.

We lost Isak (94), Barella (94) and Son (92) which means the attacking potential has taken a nose dive. The Isak deal was only ever going to happen if I felt I was getting either two players of 94 potential or one of 96+. I think I’ve gotten that with change here so long term I’m very happy but short term I’m shitting it. I signed Dovbyk as a stop gap knowing I was going to push the Isak deal more.

It’s a side that is solid but unremarkable compared to the absolute best. Modric is the best midfielder in Serie A so 93 is very possible again (I maintain he shouldn’t have dropped in the first place as he was the best player other than Pedri in midfield in La Liga last season), Reijnders is capable of 93/4 at City which I do expect to happen at some point. Baena is the best passer in La Liga (I have the data to prove it) so a rise to 92 is possible. Paqueta shouldn’t be 90 he’s shown he’s a top player.

I think tactically I’ll have to be clever and try and reach 40 points being a bit cagey. But this could be the season we get relegated.

Predicted Finish: Relegation candidates

Sunderland (14th)

Meret 90
James 91 Skriniar 90 Costa 89 Grimaldo 92
Neves 91 Locatelli 91
Amad 89 Palacios 91 Olmo 92 ⭐
Lukaku 91

Sunderland could surprise a few and I don’t expect them to be relegated, I don’t think top half is possible but they’ve got some players flirting with 90 along with some outstanding youth in Guler, Moore, Rabbaj and Ordonez which could be the makings of a very scary side in the future.

Guler is probably the one who can hit 91+ for them in future the quickest so I’d hold onto him for dear life.

They are lacking at CB mainly so will have to be mindful of that going forward.

Predicted Finish: Lower mid table

Rochdale (15th)

Maignan 92
Hakimi 94 ⭐️ Konsa 91 Calafiori 90 Mendes 93
Hjulmand 91 Cardoso 90
Pino 90 Burkardt 90 Tsygankov 90
Guirassy 92
The best fullbacks in the world. By a mile. Defence could be their best threat if they allow Mendes and Hakimi to get forward and Rochdale are the new kids on the block I most admire.

A terrific eye for talent (we often go for the same players) and a solid structure to build on, I don’t think they’ve got enough attacking talent to go much higher than midtable but I’ve utmost faith that long term they’ll have a top side. They’re crying out for another 92+ attacker and if it was me, I’d be selling Mendes for that player and moving Calafiori to LB (as I think he’ll rise soon).

Predicted Finish: Lower mid table

Southampton (16th)

Samba 89
Laimer 91 Rrahmani 91 Ito 90 Gutiérrez 89
Onana 91 Rabiot 92
Terrier 90 Maddison 91 Kolo Muani 91
Gyökeres 92 ⭐
Another solid side a little hard done by on summer edits to Maddison to 91 (when he had better stats than most risers!).

The side has talent capable of a bit more, Onana, Gyokeres and many of the younger talents (like Højlund nice +1!) which could grow into 90 rated players.

They do have an outstanding prospect in Mora but I worry will his size impact his ability to play elsewhere. Maybe Spain? If anyone is going to break 93+ in this side it’s probably got to be him so here’s hoping!

Predicted Finish: Flirting with relegation

AFC Bournemouth (17th)

Remiro 90
Stanisic 90 Aguerd 90 Hincapié 91 Mendy 90
Mac Allister 94
️ Guimarães 93 Isco 91
Raphinha 94 ⭐————————Trossard 91
Neymar 92
Wow wow wow what a starting XI we have here!

How on earth have they only just escaped relegation? A terrific starting XI in midfield and a sparkling of quality in attack should put them ahead of the likes of Cardiff et al.

Rises for Bruno G. has meant you’ll be hard pressed to find a better mix of mids and I can see they’ve opted for the 4-3-3 B to make the most of this.

My worry is what happens to the front line when Neymar retires? When Trossard is replaced at Arsenal? They probably need to invest in another wide forward or CF here. Can they get them in?

Predicted finish: Lower mid table

Norwich City (Div 2 Champions)

Sels 89
Zappacosta 89 Martinez 91 Botman 91 Gaya 90
Gundogan 92 Mkhitaryan 91
Dybala 91 Joelinton 90 Leao 93 ⭐
Wissa 90
Another solid side with sprinkling of top attacking quality thanks to securing Leao in the drafts. I think Norwich have been outstanding all of last season and have maximised the strengths and masked the weaknesses of their side superbly.

RB is of course an issue here but throughout the squad there are some exciting players like Nusa, Nwaneri and Jauregizar that I’m sure are capable of 90+ with relative ease to mask any longer term defensive woes.

If Leao can hit the ground running in Div 1 it could be a special season.

Predicted Finish. Lower mid table

Manchester City (Div 2 Runners Up)

Vicario 90
Di Lorenzo 91 De Vrij 91 Gabriel 93 ⭐️ Van De Ven 91
Enzo 93 Koopmeiners 92
Rodrygo 93 Cherki 90 Mitoma 90
Osimhen 93
Drafts have transformed City into a real contender and they could even be in the running for a European spot based on quality.

The back line is as solid as any and Gabriel is the best CB in the world IMO.

The midfield is solid, and the attacking talent should improve as Cherki rises at City.

Add to this some outstanding youth (Mastantuono and Mainoo) and it looks a really promising side too.

Predicted finish: Europa competitor

Torquay United (Play Off Winners)

Henderson 88
Stones 92 Van Hecke 89 Badé 89 Yilmaz 89
Poke 90 Ederson 91
Yildiz 90 Diaz 90 Thuram 93 ⭐
Ronaldo 92
Torquay another side benefiting from drafting has meant they’ve now got a solid side to build with and some outstanding attacking talent to hurt sides.

Yildiz, Thuram, Paz and Diaz all came from draft clubs and have absolutely transformed the prospects of the side which now boasts some seriously impressive talents. Another one that I wouldn’t be surprised to hit the 40 points often needed to survive but I’d be desperately signing a 90+ GK now to make sure it happens. Theres 4 at external and they are better short term options than Henderson.

Predicted Finish: Flirting with relegation (unless they sign a GK)

Thanks for doing the preview. Would say Middlesbrough are title favourites though. I played first team in the Charity Shield so playing a second/third string side in the first league game against Everton which is one of the 'bigger' games. Also apart from Aston Villa to start the season they've got a kinder opening run which is huge for momentum.

An interview with a....Benito. (If you thought of any other word should follow other than Benito then that is on you!)

The lights flickering as Benito's eyes flutter open, the buzz of electricity in the room as the light above sputters in and out of life sporadically, trying not to fail completely but making a bad attempt at it. He see the light on the desk pointing down at two glasses. The skin on his arms prickles as the sensations in his body comes round. The damp air causing a shiver for a few seconds, or is that something else wearing off in his system. Eyes heavy and blinking through the dazzle of the lights that do work, Benito looks straight ahead at movement draws his attention and he sees the white skull first, he knows its Frank. Letting out a sigh, thinking that it is always so dramatic with him, Benito realises he could do with a blanket. Before he could ask for one a muffled shout, followed by a frustrated sounding moan comes from another area in what looks to be like an kitchenette area. Frank sighs and looks towards the noise raising his voice he starts to talk, voice cracking as if shouting has been happening a lot recently, and a very distinct slur from alcohol. He turns to the noise.

“Honestly, can't a man get five minutes of peace When conducting an interview with one of your peers? And for the record, it was a clear penalty!”

Turning back to Benito.

"Haven't you wondered where Wino got to?"

Benito's eyes widen and Frank leans in, a grim, triumphant smile creasing his face.

"Well, well. Look who woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Now you are sat. Let the questioning begin.”

Frank pours from the bottle filling up a glass, that was already empty and still has ice in, he pushes the other glass across the table.

Frank: "So what's happening with Cardiff this season? Historic seasons have seen you a lot higher in the league table than where you currently are? Is this the changes to the system in the background? Choices of playing staff or are you losing the players in the dressing room? By all accounts the latter has been banded around the journalist bull pit."

Benito: "Firstly I wish you’d have let me put some clothes on before leaving do you at least have a blanket or something im freezing my balls off here…

To answer your first question I am immensely proud of Cardiff’s record where we have consistently performed well above what our squad and wage value would suggest as reasonable. I know how to build squads that can compete and beat the best but to win the league here is a different kettle of fish and that is the aim now. Cardiff City league champions.

I’ve been very open about going for a title challenge in Season 30 which saw us losing out to Everton on goal difference (2 goals) but since then we’ve had to accept the reality of our squad. It isn’t yet a title challenger and it couldn’t be again without a longer term view being taken (something I believe will be more sustainable than previous efforts). Ultimately we need to build a side that can beat United in the future and so I’ve adopted a very aggressive data led approach to youth development and signings U25. Now don’t get me wrong, I could with sacrifices to our longer project, make Cardiff a consistent European contender with stop gap after stop gap but it will always create a ceiling below the floor of a Manchester United. I’m more ambitious than that. I want to be the dominant side within the next 3-5 years that is sustainable over the next 5-10.

We’ve lost in the last year or so; Rudiger (94) Barella (94), Son (92), Muller (91), Ronaldo (92), Neuer (93), Griezmann (94), Gakpo (92), Lucas Hernandez (91), Diaby (91), Lukaku (91), Laporte (91) and many more 91+ rated but older players in numerous dealings so naturally the squad is losing that initial quality but what we’re gaining is what excites me most.

The players we are keeping in the squad are very much ones we feel are either vital to the short term transition like Milinkovic-Savic, Pavard and Modric (my favourite midfielder of the last decade) or the medium term players to develop into the most senior leaders, Reijnders, Isak, Kubo, Mittelstadt, Chevalier, Zabarnyi and Semenyo and of course the long term projects all of which I’ve spoken about more extensively recently who I believe will make us truly title challengers within the next 3 years.

I’d also like to point out we’re also into the Semi Finals of the SMFA shield having knocked out Aston Villa so we’re still competing for silverware."

Franks scoffs at the answer, is it because he thinks that is just excuses or does he believe it but cannot work it fully through with the amount of alcohol in his system. He wipes his mouth with the cuff of his shirt, the sleeves unbuttoned so it slides up his arm as he does so, spilling some of his drink on his knee.

Frank: "The next question is your dealings in the transfer market. Some people call it dodgy dealing, we have seen some of the tricks you have played , causing controversy with the negotiations. Let's not necessarily dwell on that one, but tell me. How in the blue hell do you manage to pull off some of those deals and how long do they take?"

Benito: “This second question feels inevitable really, I don’t think any manager makes as many deals as I do with the other managers as I do. It’s really challenging but it’s also one of the best things about management and I’d say it’s my strength relative to everyone else.

I have a few principles when making an offer for a player which for me help increase the chance of success:
PM them (talk) - very rarely do I cold call with a bid out of the blue it just doesn’t work and it’s a waste of everyone’s time (unless they’ve put a GW message out to say pay £X for player Y) open with a PM enquiring about the player.
Offer something straight away that you yourself would consider - I never offer a deal that I wouldn’t consider if I were the opposing manager. I never look to “win” a transfer as I think it’s an insult to the other managers and harms the long term relationships with them. I think the relationships are really important and I’d never deliberately want to rip someone off. I actually created the help with deals thread on the SM discord (and regularly contributed on the old forum) specifically to improve manager to manager transfer culture across SM GWs. I even helped devise the fair trade agreements of years gone by. This means I do extensive looks into everyone’s squads every season to look at who needs what, who has bid on certain types of players and I ask myself if I were this manager what would I want from Cardiff to part with this player/players. It’s why the write ups of everyone’s squads wasn’t too awkward for me to do solo, as I keep tabs on everyone.
Listen - This is so important, you need to understand what the manager wants from the deal. If you aren’t sure then ask questions and listen to the response. My best deals come from listening.
Compromise - To do bigger deals you need to also lose something from your squad. If you’re asking the earth most people will rightly avoid you and you develop a reputation for being difficult. There are very few deals for a very small amount of players where one side makes significantly more compromises than another (Endrick springs to mind) but you can’t expect to be that one sided all the time.
Patience and pace - Some deals have taken me over 6 months to complete. Some are done in a few hours. Knowing when to push harder and when to hold back is vital in negotiations.
Now if we apply those principles to some deals I’ve made historically you can gain a little insight into my mind and probably also get the answer to your third question. One thing I think is hard to explain is how many of these deals are interlinked but I do have a list of them (and might one day explain it all).

Best Deal Contenders:

Post in thread 'The SM RedCafe League'
https://www.redcafe.net/threads/the-sm-redcafe-league.349538/post-24518418

August 7th 2019 - Kepa (24/91) = Neuer (33/93) + Pellegrini (23/90)

That was my first and possibly best big deal. The linked post goes into the full context but I spent weeks negotiating with about 4/5 clubs trying to get a GK and young player included. Neuer rose to 95, Pellegrini to 91 and Kepa fell off a cliff.

September 1st 2021 - Sanchez (25/90) + £18m = Rüdiger (28/91)

The manager wanted cash and a replacement CB. Rudiger went on to be a 94 rated CL winner. Sanchez dropped to 89 in Dec 2022.

I’ve since used Rudiger and Gakpo (who I got by selling Vardy) to get Barella, bought Rüdiger back for Elanga and Zabarnyi and then got Zabarnyi back along with £15m for Rüdiger. Oh and sold Barella to get Reijnders, Bouaddi + £20m.

It’s all connected!

February 11th 2025 - Isak (25/92) = Ben (19/86) Seghir + Sudakov (22/88)

Long term I think Ben Seghir is a 94+ potential winger and Sudakov a 92+ CAM so for me this deal wasn’t good for the long term but was excellent because of what it does for Cardiff now and in the medium term (3 years). I cannot be unhappy about having a now 94 rated CF he’s kept me in Division 1 and means I have time to allow Endrick to develop.

March 7th 2025 - Pino (22/90) = Chevalier (23/89) + Mittelstadt (28/90)

I love this deal because I think both sides got what they wanted but for me it fixed two key problem areas. GK and LB I was desperate for both and really didn’t want to lose Pino but a compromise was made for the benefit of the squad.

July 7th 2025 - Diomande (21/89) = £72.5m + Todibo (25/90)+ Fer Lopez (21/82)

I only got Todibo because West Ham were selling him to external for less cash. I offered £18m.

Then I saw Norwich would be high up the Blackburn draft, knew they’d want Leao but might need cash and went through the 5 steps above to see if a deal for Diomande could be agreed. I really didn’t want to lose Fer Lopez nor Kostoulas who Norwich wanted as I was expecting to do a deal for Hato involving Kostoulas. Because of so many player sales I made I had enough cash to make it tempting for Norwich and a deal was agreed. I still maintain Fer Lopez is a potentially 92+ player in the next 2/3 years.

You stop talking and Frank is staring at you. He sits so still you aren't sure if he has fallen unconscious or if he is waiting for something. He blinks, drinks and waves his glass, sloshing more liquid out.

"I was waiting for the rest of that, wasn't sure whether you were done." His wet grin shows the sarcasm, you think of some unsavoury words but don't utter them.

Frank: "Question three, regret is a big part of this game and this seems to happen more often than the joy. So tell me, what is the worst transfer you have ever made and how did you fool yourself that it wasn't that bad until you realised it was? What also was the one deal that made up for it all?"

Benito: September 21st 2020 - Reguilón (23/89) + Rabiot (25/91) + £31m = Rodri (24/92)

I was desperate for a LB Reguilón was heavily linked to Real Madrid but went to Spurs. Rodri won the Ballon D’or and is now. 96 rated. FML. Probably the worst.

August 16th 2023 - Koopmeiners (25/91) + Mudryk (22/88) = Antony (23/91)

Koopmeiners is an AZ player (which are gold dust to me) but I was desperate for higher rated wingers. It did not go well. Koopmeiners became 92, Antony became a meme. Definitely in contention for being the worst.

July 27th 2024 - Endrick (18/87) + Ferguson (25/89) + Palhinha (29/91) = Hato (18/84) + Mbeumo (24/90)+ Tchouameni (24/93)

This one took ages to negotiate 6 months from start to finish. It’s entirely an all or nothing gamble on Endrick being a 96+ rated forward at some point. Ferguson and Palhinha softened the blow of losing Mbeumo (who I knew was Salah 2.0 style wise and due a big move since his championship days) and Tchouameni who I think is peaked at 93. Hato I didn’t want to lose but I’ve since replaced him with Torrents and Ahanor (who I think can surpass him). It’s objectively so one sided that I think it’s broken West Ham and ruined transfers with them for everyone else as it’s messed up their expectations. Could be the worse if Endrick doesn’t at least hit 93 in future. Could be the best if he’s 96+ jury out…

The one that got away….

Maguire (28/92) = Rice (22/90) + money

I’m an idiot for not taking up Newcastle on this one… but I was desperately short at CB."

Benito take a few breaths after the grilling and Frank sees his glass is yet again empty.
He pours more liquid into it, tutting quietly as he sees your glass untouched. Frank stands up and walks towards the area Wino is being kept. Muffled shouts through the gag speaks of anger. Frank leans forward and pulls a fridge door open pulling out an ice tray frome the ice rack. Slamming the tray on the top releases ice to skittle across the surface onto the floor. One must have hit Wino as an angry shriek rattles out.

"Shut up Wino, at least you've got more clothes on."

The muffles stop

End of part 1

Very proud of Barnsley over the years I have been in charge when looking back at my Div 1 in my 1st stint and this stint. I cannot quite pull off the same defensively annoying tactics with higher rated players otherwise I would never score.

Konate is terrible, however Szoboszlai has been their best player imo. He deserves a +1 imo.

Thanks for all the stats above, I love this time of the GW season.

Div 2, you are not forgotten, just in a life backlog.

Also in my unbiased opinion (ignore his SM international caps), Konate has to go down in rating as well. Been dire all season.
That’s fair.

Salah -1
VVD -1
Konate -1
Robertson -1 etc
