Season 36 Division 1 Squad Analysis and Preview
Season 36 is fast approaching and we’ve just entered the top 5 league review season with Germany nearly complete. As is now customary we’ll take a little look into the division 1 squads and see who has what it takes to usurp the mighty Manchester United

Manchester United (Division 1 Champions)

Oblak 93
Frimpong 92 Kounde 92 VVD 95 Trent 94
Rice 94 Pedri 94
Pulisic 92 Bellingham 95 N.Williams 92
Mbappe 96 ⭐
13 points clear AGAIN last season but now some serious issues have emerged in the squad and post review I think a few sides will be able to get at them more.

The side has no 90+ natural LB and that doesn’t look like changing and the previous issues at CB and wing remain. I can see VVD dropping and both wingers don’t appear to have a move to more in them so the side feels past its peak now with the exception of Pedri capable of +1/2 in future.

Despite this is still an incredible side with the best midfield and striker options in the GW so while I think it now is in desperate need of addressing CB and LB it’s still perfectly capable of dominating the league.

Predicted finish: Champions

Southend United (2nd)

Donnaruma 93
Timber 92
Upamecano 92 Bastoni 94 Davies 92
Valverde 94 Bentacur 91
Simeone 90 Havertz 92 Nuñez 91
Dembele 95 ⭐️

A nice rise in the back line has meant they probably have one of the best balanced back 4s in the league with good depth too.

I’m still a bit worried about the attack, Nunez and Havertz just don’t feel like they justify their higher ratings in real life and Dembele is heavily linked to Saudi clubs this summer so that could become an issue within the next 3-4 months.

A lot of the younger talent has developed well since the last preview so hopefully a few rises here and there will help certainly in midfield and defence to make them even more impressive. It’s a wonderful side and one I hope Greenie continues to manage for as long as possible.

Predicted Finish: 2nd

Leyton Orient (3rd)

Martinez 93
White 91 Tapsoba 91 Gvardiol 93 Balde 91
Vitinha 94 ⭐Pavlovic 91
Coman 91 Nkunku 91 Doku 92
Messi 94

Some big rises to Doku and Pavlovic have meant when fully fit, the squad now has a bit more quality and depth to really push the better sides. As long as Messi stays 94, they’ll always have a chance!

Defensively they still have some of the best prospects around in Gvardiol, Yoro, Huijsen and Balde. I can’t see any issues here long term it’s just superb. Tapsoba is currently 1st choice at CB but I can’t see that being the case for long.

Vitinha and Pavlovic is a lovely midfield duo and one to keep for the long term. I am still worried about their natural AM prospects, I know a few players can play here in the squad but it’s not their actual position in real life and so they are at risk of losing it and I don’t see a natural fit in the squad that really excites me.,

Kroupi as expected is the bright spark in the youth of the sides attack and someone I’d expect the Stain to keep for the next few years to see how he develops. Doku’s rise has helped steady LW so most of the work now should go into a RW replacement for Coman. I’m not fully convinced by Bakayoko who was completely overtaken by Diomande (on his weaker side).

Predicted Finish: Top 4 challengers

Aston Villa (4th)

Ter Stegen 91
Livramento 89 Maguire 90 Torres 91 Hernandez 91
Gavi 91 Barrios 91
Yamal 95 Foden 93 Wirtz 94
Kane 96 ⭐️

Another solid season and a great move for Barrios has meant now they only need to desperately focus on building up the defence.

I would absolutely sacrifice Foden for a CB and RB or LB if a top option is available as it would be transformative to their title chances. I don’t see him now recovering a 94 anytime soon and he’s closer to a drop than a raise now.

Yamal rising to 95 has meant this attacking line is by far the best in the league. 96,95,94,93,92 and 91 is immense depth and something that just needs a solid platform behind it to potentially dominate for a long time to come!

Predicted Finish: Top 4 contenders

Nottingham Forest (5th)

Sommer 92
Porro 91 Marquinhos 94 Militão 93 Carreras 90
Caicedo 93 Camavinga 92
Sane 92 Álvarez 94 Adeyemi 90
Lewandowski 94 ⭐️

A solid finish but the side now needs major work.

Porro has had an awful season so -1 likely, Marquinhos not quite a 94 anymore and Militao could see a potential -1 too.

CM is solid for the medium term but both players are close to their peak my main worries are the wide options and attack or CAM. Lewandowski will drop to 93 and is moving away from Barcelona so his rating will drop hard in the next year or two. Meaning Alvarez has to be seen as the CF. They do have some good CAM potential in Uzun, Karetsas and Rabbaj to name a few but they need a better RW option than Sane and Chiesa (both of whom should be moved on now).

Predicted Finish: Europa places

Everton (6th)

Alisson 94
Bellanova 90 Dias 94 Milenkovic 90 Olivera 90
Rodri 95 ⭐️ Kimmich 94
Gordon 91 Silva 93 Diaz 93
Oyarzabal 92

I said last season I thought Everton’s title challenging days were over and I stand by it. The core players are heading towards the end of their peaks so while I don’t see any significant rating drops imminent, there has to be a succession plan now.

The biggest blow for me is the real life Ekitike injury. I don’t know any player who came back stronger from it and I think it’s ruined his potential if others are anything to go by which is a tremendous shame if so as he could have carried Everton’s attack to a few higher ratings. Now I’m not so sure. Maybe Pio Esposito will be the one to step up? The have options in the meantime and a sale of Ekitike right now probably wouldn’t get his value.

Predicted finish: In Europe

Torquay (7th)

Carnesecchi 90
Stones 92 Van Hecke 90 Badé 89 Svensson 89
Poke 90 Ederson 91
Yildiz 91 Paz 90 Thuram 93 ⭐
Ronaldo 92

Some solid rises has meant Torquay are secure in Division 1 with no reason to suspect a drop off at any point. They took the advice to buy a 90+ GK and it’s made them a much more solid unit.

Rises to key positions has meant now the side is much better balanced with some great talent in Paz and Yildiz.

You can see the logic in the sides construction really well and I love what they’ve done in a relatively short space of time.

Predicted Finish: Midtable

West Ham (8th)

Marmardashvili 91
Muñoz 90 Tah 93 Laporte 91 Cardona 90
Tchouameni 93 ⭐️ Locatelli 91
Mbeumo 91 Eze 91 Torres 91
Watkins 92

Well how wrong was I? A brilliant season from West Ham and the side looks solid for the coming season too.

Igor Thiago looks to be having a worldie season so could jump straight to 90/91 and there is solid depth throughout. I don’t see much more growth to come from the side now though. Maybe Mbeumo 92 and Eze next season but I think it’s pretty settled now.

They shouldn’t have any problems this season and will be a tougher side to score against with Tah’s +1 to 93.

Predicted Finish: Safe but bottom half

Middlesbrough (9th)

Neuer 93
Molina 91 Rüdiger 93 Pacho 92 Dimarco 92
Barella 94 Ruiz 92
Palmer 93 De Brunye 94 Gakpo 92
Salah 95 ⭐️

This should be the title challengers, this should be the club to dethrone United but will they?

Since our last preview the starting XI has deteriorated but the squad has shot up as a whole. It’s a scary mix of potential which should have it in them to win a league soon. An emerging issue is concerns now though so they definitely need to sell some depth to improve the starting XI.

Predicted Finish: Top 4 contenders

Manchester City (10th)

Di Gregorio 89
Di Lorenzo 91 Thiaw 90 Gabriel 94 ⭐️ Van De Ven 91
Enzo 93 Koopmeiners 91
Rodrygo 93 Cherki 91 Mitoma 90
Osimhen 93

This City side could be special and certainly is capable of a Europe push. But I worry that Rodrygo and Osimhen have reached a peak that won’t afford them the opportunity to challenge for a title.

Mainoo should replace Koopmeiners very soon and Mastantuono has the talent to play at a higher level but I don’t see a 94/5+ attacker in the youth set up and that will be the difference between a title challenge or just a very well put together side.

Predicted finish: Europa competitor

Fulham (11th)

Costa 91
Wieffer 89 Pavlović 89 Hernández 92 Dalot 90
Rovella 89 Koke 91
Neto 92 Musiala 94 ⭐️ Akliouche 90
Pedro 90
I still don’t know what Neto did to hit 92 so it feels really weird seeing him at that rating when others who contributed way more than him in the PL are on 91s (Semenyo, Mbeumo etc) but his rise gives Fulham a bit more dynamism.

Pedro maybe has a 91 in him (but only if Thiago does too) and Musiala came back from injury at a good standard too so no major concern there.

It’s still a bit lighter in CM and defensively so not anywhere near a true top 4 challenge but certainly a solid side.

Predicted Finish: Bottom half but safe.

Norwich City (12th)

Sels 89
Zappacosta 89 Martinez 91 Botman 90 Gaya 89
Gundogan 92 Mkhitaryan 91
Amad 90 Dybala 91 Leao 93 ⭐
Wissa 90
Another solid side with a sprinkling of quality in Leao (although I personally don’t think he’s a 93 player) you can see that defensively they are starting to feel the strain.

I can’t see them bettering this finish anytime soon, so it now comes down to how their youth develops as to how successful they can be over the coming years. .

Predicted Finish. Lower mid table

Southampton (13th)

Samba 89

Onana 91 Rabiot 92
Saelemaekers 90 Maddison 91 Kolo Muani 91
Gyökeres 92 ⭐️

A small rise for Laimer is the only real change here and so I worry again about the GK and attacking set up relative to the rest of the league in terms of ceiling and current ratings. I can’t see them moving off being lower mid - relegation without some serious scouting for worldies.

Gyokeres was the hope but doesn’t look at all convincing.

Predicted Finish: Flirting with relegation

Rochdale (14th)

Garcia 90
Hakimi 94 ⭐️ Konsa 91 Calafiori 91 Mendes 93
Hjulmand 91 Cardoso 90
Pino 90 Nmecha 90 Ndiaye 90
Guirassy 92

Another solid season and a small rise at the back sets them up nicely.

The fullbacks are once again the strength but I worry that a weaker CM and Wing/AM section is just going to hold them back from higher unless they figure out how to exploit their fullbacks more.

Ideally they need someone to come in with 92+ potential behind the striker, we’ll see if that can happen.

Predicted Finish: Lower mid table

Newcastle United (15th)

Hradecky 90
Carvajal 92 Konate 92 Christensen 90 Cucurella 92
Stiller 91 Merino 92
Gnabry 91 Odegaard 93 Vini Jr 95⭐
Cunha 91

So it wasn’t a blip and maybe it’s the beginning of the end of the competitive era.

Huge drop at GK, CB and LW has meant the overall side is significantly weaker than previous seasons. It will take tremendous management to hit anything much higher now.

The real worry is a lot of these players are older and the replacements aren’t necessarily guaranteed successes so it’s hard to know what the future holds here. Stiller doesn’t look like he’ll get a big move and as said before I just don’t see a RW prospect at the club that takes over from Gnabry.

Predicted Finish: Bottom half

Cardiff City (16th)

Chevalier 91
Araújo 91 Diomande 89 Zabarnyi 90 Mittelstadt 90
Modric 92 Neves 92 ⭐
Kubo 91 Güler 90 Baena 91
Son 92

I predicted close to relegation last season and I wasn’t wrong! We left it late but survived so what does the future hold?

Anyone who has paid attention knows Cardiff have massively regenerated in the last year or so, and it’s beginning to pay off ratings wise. I hope I’m not being too biased in saying we probably have the best U21 mix of talents with Neves, Güler, Diomande and Endrick providing a very high ceiling with more to come from Dowman et al. 2 years ago I would have left Cardiff for Southend. Now I wouldn’t swap them for anyone else’s side.

As things stand we are still solid, but unremarkable ratings wise. We have no 93+ players (something I expect to change very soon) and with Modric, Son and Benzema amongst the best rated here, they can’t play forever and need replacing. Internal solutions do look very good Bouaddi, Diomande, Endrick are about as good as you can ask for.

Defence is the biggest issue but it’s consciously something I’m not worried about. I’ve got very good prospects coming through and eventually I know it just takes time for Diomande and Zabarnyi to hit 92+ ratings along with others. Kayode should sort RB and I think Ahanor will end up a LCB/LB to take over from Mittelstadt.

The depth is improving as reviews come in and while I still think we’ll be relegation candidates this season, I think it will be the last one like that for a long time.

Predicted Finish: Relegation candidates

Barnsley also narrowly avoided relegation and Div 1 wouldn’t be the same without them.

They’ve kept their older but higher rated core and it’s not failed them yet and I would expect them to again be safe.

The GK rise has meant a solid young GK is emerging along with Szoboszlai, Guèhi, Simons and Martinelli there are a good solid young core emerging.

Predicted finish: Bottom half

Milton Keynes Dons (Promoted Champions)

Courtois 95 ⭐
Pavard 91 Bremer 92 Le Normand 91 Grimaldo 92
Calhanoglu 93 Xhaka 92
Perez 91 David 91 Barcola 92
Isak 94
A monumental effort to smash 100 points last season and take home the Division 2 title. The side has all the hallmarks of one that could upset the big boys this season.

A world class GK, a solid back 4, two solid CMs, Barcola and Isak are more than enough tools to do some serious damage. Anytime I see a squad with a 94 CF I know they can win a lot of games with good tactical set ups.

Predicted Finish: European challengers

Kidderminster Harriers (Promoted Runners Up)

Trubin 89
Baku 89 Saliba 94 ⭐️ Lucimí 89 Truffert 88
Lobotka 91 Wharton 89
Bowen 91 Gibbs-White 90 Kvaratskhelia 93
Kean 91
A lovely side promoted into division 1 with some sprinkling of world class talent in Saliba and Kvaratskhelia and some excellent youth players coming through too.

Of course there is a bit of a lull in ratings in the back 5 I’d expect a small rise for Truffert and Saliba should be enough to hold it together until a longer term solution is found at RB, LCB and LB (although Truffert could be it).

I really like their CM and AM options more for the longer term so I can’t see anything but good things ahead on that front so my only real worry is the RW and ST position.

I think Mbaye could take that RW slot longer term but ST seems a bit light and it’s absolutely where they need a better long term solution.

Predicted finish: Flirting with relegation

Wolverhampton Wanderers (Promoted Play Off Finals)

Simon 91
Akanji 92 Hien 90 Buongiorno 91 Ryerson 90
Tonali 92 Zubimendi 92
Rogers 92 ⭐️ Sancet 91 Lee 90
Openda 91
I’m really glad to see Wolves back in Division 1 and they did it the hard way!

They have a great collection of players and solid depth that should see them safe (certainly more so than Cardiff for example). Rogers might be out wide and on a weaker side but his bullish ball carrying combined with Sancet’s eye for goal means the attacking midfielder roles are well stocked.

Central midfield is also impressive with Tonali and Zubimendi solid 92s at good ages and Jones to rotate, I can’t see anything major here to work on so I’d be looking at scouting some youth CMs to take over eventually.

Defensively they have some excellent youth prospects so should be able to grow their ratings over the years here with internal solutions.

Striker however? A serious issue. Openda will never be the player to move them to CL contenders or more so a lot of faith is being placed in youth options that don’t excite me too much. My advice would be to use one of the overstocked AMs or CMs and see what you can get into the club.

Predicted finish: Midtable

Thanks for the previews as always Benito. I really thought that last season my title chances were slim to none due to the circumstances plus Middlesbrough going all out, but we ended up breaking numerous records. Again, I don't think the title will be happening - favourites will be whoever takes over Southend in my opinion. They face us first but I played my strongest side in the Charity Shield so I have to play a youth side against them which gives them a direct three point advantage.

Then factoring in the inevitable drops, it is going to be grim. Winning both preseason comps is more than I could have imagined this season.

I think it would be unusual for a side to go so many in a row but as long as VVD is 94+ you’ve always got a chance. Definitely feels like you’re in last dance territory now for the first time in forever.

Southend, Middlesbrough good shouts. I would put my name into the hat for Southend but I love Cardiff far too much now.

Southend United new manager vote:

Sunil (Tottenham Hotspur):

Hi everyone, I’ve applied for the Southend manager position and would really appreciate your support in the vote. Last month, I took charge of Spurs to get a feel for the Gameweek, understanding the rules, how deals are made, and how managers operate here. Even though I was advised to wait for bigger clubs, I chose to jump in early to learn by doing. During that time, I actively worked on revamping the squad and engaging with other managers through multiple deals. I had also applied for Newcastle, but that role was filled by managers from another league/gameworld. With Southend now open, I’m keen to continue and build something long-term here. I’m committed to staying active for years and contributing consistently, as I already do in another league focused on a youth-only challenge. I believe I’ve shown that I’m flexible, proactive, and engaged with managers to make fair deals and I’ll bring the same approach to Southend. If you feel I’m a good fit, I’d really appreciate your vote. Thanks, Sunil

Okeeno (Leeds United):

I am proven to be a long standing and dedicated manager for every role I've assumed on SM. My philosophy is building strong sustainable teams that have a mixture of quality and youth and are capable of playing high tempo entertaining brand of football. I've been proven in a couple GW to turn a quality build into winning titles on a consistent basis. Whilst not an active discord member I've been known to contribute my fair share in new feeds. I'm also an active transfer negotiator intent on transforming any team into my own image. As seen in my short stint at leeds I've manage to completely overhaul the team within a month and have already brought in some exciting talents. Whilst Southend has strong quality I do see an opportunity to setup the squad for a more sustainable future.

Hopefully I get it, if not the journey continues with Spurs, grinding in Division 2.

Div 2 roundup for this season below, (in no particular order). I will hold off on the Leeds and Spurst writeups until after the Southend voting is complete. Once that is done I will review the remaining team.

P.s. excuse any spelling mistakes or poor grammar.

AFC Bournemouth

Sanchez
(28 / 90)
Kadioglu Stanisic Hincapie Mendy
(26 / 90) (26 / 91) (24 / 91) (30 / 89)
Mac Allister Guimaraes
(27 / 94)⭐️ (38 / 93)
Raphinha Trossard Neymar
(29 / 94) (31 / 91) (34 / 90)
Gonzalez
(28 / 90)

The Frank Review:
Some glittering players in the team, with some rises and drops foreseeable in the near future. A couple of talents in the youth ranks, with Chavez my personal favourite. I do wonder where the overall depth is as time moves on and players either age or fall off the pace but there is still a bit of time to deal with that, nothing urgent or drastic required yet.

Hereford

Raya
(30 / 92)
Garcia Cubarsi Kim Kerkez
( 25 / 89) (19 / 91) (29 / 92) (22 / 89)
Thuram Gallagher
(25 / 90) (26 / 90)
Olise Moleiro Kulusevski
(24 / 94) (22 / 90) (26 / 91)
Haaland
(25 / 96)⭐️

The Frank Review: Well, well, well. This is a relegated team that I would never have expected to be relegated and one that I fully expect to bounce straight back up. The potential for goals is huge, but the game engine does give us some surprising seasons. I worry for the Spurs players but other than that the first team is solid. There are plenty of players in the second string due for rises so the drops for Kulu and Gallagher will not be too much of a worry. The youth team looks to have a few gems as well. I am particularly interested in Ibra, Godts and Echeverri.

Bristol City

Sa
(33 / 87)
Dumfries Romero Danso Guerreiro
(30 / 92) (28 / 92) (27 / 89) (32 / 90)
Tielemans Gomes
(28 / 92) (25 / 89)
Semenyo Reijnders McTomminay
(26 / 91) (27 / 92) (29 / 92)
Martinez
(28 / 94) ⭐️

The Frank Review: I would say the most obvious thing about this team is to get a keeper. There are some keepers that are better rated out there, heck, I am looking to move Meret on, so hit me up if you want a discussion (I won’t hold you to ransom). Other than that the midfield and the forward positions are great, but the defence is where more consideration is needed. Slightly ageing as well as a couple of Spurs players that are not necessarily going to hold ratings and there is not much readily available backup. Some good young players Garnacho (if he can pull his attitude back) and Obi, if he can stay level headed.

Bury

Lammens
(23 / 88)
James Veiga Ordonez Cancelo
(26 / 92) (22 / 89) (22 / 88) (31 / 91)
Luiz Karl
(27 / 89) (18 / 88)
Saka Kudus Estevao
(21 / 94)⭐️ (25 / 90) (19 / 90)
Retegui
(27 / 91)

The Frank Review: Initially you look at this squad and see some areas that are a bit deficient, but I think after the next review cycle it will be fine. Lammens (who I personally do not rate, so if you want to sell him to me I will take him off your hands) must get a rise....and Karl will also be getting his rise too. Estevao will offset a potential Kudus drop and Sesko is great cover for Retegui. There will be a call to make as concerns start in the striker position, but that won’t be hard to make a call on. Defence will probably need a boost at some point, but the amount of younger players with potential for a rise is quite incredible here for a Div 2 side. From a your perspective, some exiting potentials but nothing jumping out quite yet, Maza maybe, but beyond that I look forward to watching. I have to say one of the better squad builders I have seen. Keep up the good work!

Arsenal

Moraes
(32 / 92)
Henrichs Lukeba Baleba Ake
(29 / 89) (23 / 90) (22 / 89) (31 / 91)
Kamarra Fernandes
(26 / 91) (31 / 94)⭐
Elanga Frattesi Ramsey
(24 / 89) (26 / 90) (24 / 89)
Embolo
(29 / 89)

The Frank Review: Struggled to work through this team and where I would place players. You could easily swap Fernandes and Fratessi around depending on your opponent and the tactics you will employ, (attacking versus defensive). In terms of depth there is not much to play with when injuries happen, so hope noone sets up like Liverpool used to. A few players on the outskirts of performances and teams, so I am not too hopeful of many rises, there are a few but not many.

Sheffield United

Kobel
(28 / 91)
Lewis Colwill Bissek Ait-Nouri
(21 / 88) (23 / 90) (25 / 89) (24 / 89)
Scalvini Ricci
(22 / 90) (24 / 89)
Conceisao Olmo Sudakov
(23 / 90) (27 / 92)⭐️ (23 / 89)
Vlahovic
(26 / 91)

The Frank Review: Defence is a tiny bit weak but again this is another team where a review cycle will shore it up quickly, so I have no real issues here as it is a young defence with time to improve. Midfield and Attack is quite solid for Div 2 and has a good chance of score a few. Depth is okay and there are definitely a few rises incoming. Loads of your potential but only time will tell with them. I personally like Warhurst and Ben Seghir, the latter who is very promising.

So no PM convo for this? Voting in main site?

Cheers for the write up @Dom Gill

It was a perfect mixture of many unfortunate things and hoping to pay much more attention this season

Pleasure reading your reviews as always @BenitoSTARR

I can’t back either manager leaving a rebuild so early.

Tottenham Hotspur draft

Next up: Brighton & Hove Albion (PM’d on SM)

Rules:
  1. Only Gold managers will unfortunately be allowed to do transfers thanks to SM. We can't do the workaround any more as they have patched it. If you're non-Gold but intend on getting Gold, let me know and I'll put you back in draft.
  2. Time between picks is now 16 hours instead of the previous 12. I would prefer if you message me picks in advance to make things go faster. Please include your club name if messaging on RedCafe.
